Lightbulb TF GS Corsair & Saito FG84 RE MOD

I just received our FG84 back from Ray and now Im starting to install it and get the plane ready for flight. This thread is going to be all about the installation and any modifications made to the TF GS Corsair in the process and then how it performs.

The FG 84 was bench run for about 5hrs before being shipped to Ray. The engine received his bearing and intake mods, 4 bolt DA drive hub mod and the Keleo exhaust ring. Ray was a pleasure to work with and he turned the engine back around in very little time. Thanks Ray!

Ive started to make some preparations for the engines arrival by modifying the rudder and its servo location. This short thread can be found here http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/rc-w...relocated.html
The purpose of this mod was to give the rudder more effectiveness at higher speeds than the stock installation has. Plus the added weight up front should balance out fine considering whats coming up next.

Ok a quick fact check;

Saito engine diameter is 250mm
Fuselage diameter at the firewall is 240mm

The plan is to see how the stock cowl will lend itself to modification AND Im looking into the H9 cowl to adapt to the TF fuse.

Either way the cowl flaps are going to help hide the difference so it wont be an issue.

For the Saito 84, what prop nut or hub are you going to use?

If you had Ray do the Saito 84 modification, I'm assuming you have the Keleo exhaust. Have you seen this? Keleo engine box...

I have and yes we have the ring but Im making a new firewall that will allow you to remove the motor with the tank on the back side. Im planning to make a mount for the tank so its at the suggested position and as close as possible to the carb. I might also incorporate a throttle servo mount if possible.

We had Ray do the hub mod to the DLE 4 bolt pattern. In addition we modified the True Turn Corsair scale spinner with a deeper pocket to allow the Saito jam nut with spinner screw threaded hole to clear inside the spinner. Theres lots of material to remove. Now the jam nut fits and the spinner will work for aesthetic effect.

For your propeller, what size reamer did you use for the center hole? 12mm?

Cleaned off firewall.
Next I removed the original tank holding part of the second bulkhead. Also opened up the firewall more.

Some planning going on the new firewall doubler. This is 1/8in Birch Ply. There will be another 1/4in firewall to bolt the engine to.

Here is his email: [email protected]

I think I read somewhere that the newer Saito radials have incorporated his design by license. I may be wrong.

Only the 60 size Saito radials incorporate Ray's design changes, as far as I can find out there are no plans to incorporate the mods for the 33 and 84 radials. I suspect it's because they'd have a hoard of irritated users wanting their engines upgraded for free. But that's a guess.

Great project Chris...looking forward to watching this develop. Any idea what the cylinder head temps are at full throttle?

Thanks, No testing info yet but Im also looking forward to that info. Im going to make sure there's plenty of air flow thru the cowl and cowl flaps. The engine will sound awesome though!

This is the second bulkhead and I've removed the middle part to make room for the fuel tank and its mount.

Ok so a couple of things. Here is the latest now that the tank mount and servo mount are glued to the firewall.

The engine is a little closer to the fuse than I'd like so from here Im adding 5mm more to the standoffs. That will place the prop further forward of the cowl for prop clearance and scale look.

This whole unit comes out for service.

The retract air system is finished.
The battery packs have been located now I just need to solder plugs. The switch harnesses and charge plugs are installed.

Pretty close now, I just want to finish the front end before I put the tail end together. The cowl and mounts are going to be a challenge.

Also had to make the simple knotch in the second bulkhead for the tank mount. This supports the cantilevered mount during positive G's. I'm adding a triangle to the side of the plate for negative G's.

Hi Chris...great work with the engine mount/fuel tank set up. If I ever build another corsair, I would make a similar set up. Makes plumbing the tank and running all the stuff much easier. Have you thought about where you are going to mount the ignition module?

Thanks guys,
yes the ignition module will be velcro mounted to the runner just inside the opening I made. Wires will pass through from below and up to the plugs.
The tank main line is very short and this way I was able to set the tank just like they require in the manual.
On the Keleo ring there is a pressure fitting. Anyone use this for tank back pressure or for smoke? Its at 12oclock position so with the heat it makes sense as a smoke oil inlet.
