Default Fw 190 markings

I am ready to paint my Dave Platt FW190 and have to decide if I should put a Swastika on the fin. My father was killed in WWII during the Battle of the Bulge, therefore I have a very good reason to hate what that symbol stands for. I do not think it is in poor taste to display this symbol on a scale model but I do not want to insult or anger anyone. I am asking for opinions on this matter.

Thanks, P51Tom

+1. There are so many ways to add the details on the tail without having the actual "swastika".. you can come close and be good enough..

Well, it's you plane..............I prefer the Iron Cross. That being said, to be actuate the swastika would be correct and and easily defended a historical accurate.

There you go a great display of indecision!

Tom if I had to guess you actually really want to do it but perhaps your having an issue with peer pressure at your flying field or something.
People will look to be upset, anoid, angry and insulted with just about anything you do these days. F-them! Honestly. Its historical fact and it touched your family as it did mine. I dont deny it, hide it or make excuses for it. If someone cant handle it its on them not you. Your representing something factual, a swastika on a model plane should be no more or less offensive as a red dot is to some people in China.

Im half Italian, my Grandfather was an Italian tank commander in N Africa under Rommel. I have his medals on display in a beautiful shadow box on the wall and one of them is a black cross with a swastika in the center. The real deal.

Personally I hate it when guys dont depict the swastika correctly or not at all on German models, its a PC cop out and an attemp to soften history. There are no angels in war and every country that wages war should have their symbols banned if you want to go down that road.

Just do it and enjoy your historically accurate German model!

The aircraft itself is also a symbol of the times and people it depicts. With or without the swastika, you will impress and offend the same people who wish to be impressed or offended.
BTW, I love my 190. Great flying plane.

There are alternatives to the markings of the original owners:

I will be offended if you don't put it on. That's like putting a barbie in the cockpit of a warbird.

I have heard people say they would never fly a German aircraft. So, just the planes themselves have the ability to offend.

Not being one to care about such things, I mostly fly German airplanes, and if they had a swastika, they get one. Most people cannot separate between WW1 and WW2, and I have had comments made about my Fokker DVII as being racist. I told them to read some history.

This topic comes up over and over and over again. To be accurate you should apply the swastika. But personally, I will always avoid putting a swastika on an airplane. I am fervently and passionately against the Nazi swastika. However, I look forward to buying an ESM FW-190 Dora 9. Love the German planes - hate the Nazi swastika.

Luckily for us the first amendment to the Constitution allows us to display the swastika. It may offend some people but we have to take some of the bad with all the good the amendment permits. Go for it. Dan.

Tom,
it sounds to me, part of you has a bit of a personal conflict, hence the need for re-assurance. I was in the same spot for years for similar reasons until I figured out my position with the issue.
Once you do, it will not matter what other people think.

There weren't any "Nazi" flightsuits. "Nazi" refers to a political party...not a military force. That would be like saying that a US Air Force pilot today wears a "Democratic" flightsuit.

Are you seriously correcting me on my exaggerated example?

The only graphics I have a second thought about are nude women nose art like my favorite P-51 Passion Wagon. People get bent by nudity in public even if its all period correct and historically accurate. At a local flying field where there are women and children visiting or as family members of other members I just get weirded out. I feel like I'd be a pervert looking at Playboy in a news stand or something.
Nobody cares much about German aircraft markings here, but then again I do live in Idaho, lol

Well, You could always model the Marsielle ME 109. He was so mad at the upper brass he had his swastika removed from his plane while in Africa. That is If I remember this correct. He at least threatened to do it.

And yes, in fact the military was forbidden to have party affiliation. They may have supported the party, but publicly they could not be a member. The SS is another story though. I do not think there was an SS squadron of aircraft. I have not read about one anyway.

I think Tom wants to build the 190 and there are not as many choices except Luftwaffe paint schemes. The 109 on the other hand has tons of non Luftwaffe options.

The Air and Space museum paint their planes as they would have been when new.. If they had a swastika they get one no matter what.

Do what ever you feel is right, I like to make my models as accurate as possible even it that includes the Balkenkreuz. I have even done a 109G in Croatian Air Force colors to avoid the issue.

We have to so careful these days to be "politically correct" and not offend someone.
