Time to finish tail gunner area

I will cut out an area for "Joe" after making a bottom hatch for access to pushrods

A little more filling around stabilizer and tail ball and we'll be done with tail-building

We are lucky to still have a core group of good builders here in central Iowa... The percentage is low..but higher than most places (I think).

Its a lot more fun going to local events when planes like this show up. We also have a pretty dedicated group of 1/4 scale WW1 builders
(including me) So we have some fun when we all get together.

Last year early in the morning I had my 1/3 Sopwith Pup at the same time two of these bombers were doing some testing. We stayed out of each others way but it was an odd mix to be sure !

Yeah, normally I would hold my tongue to avoid embarrassing my friends, but since he opened that door you should know that foodstick is "The Big Cahuna" of WW I planes in Iowa.

I can't even land the darned things on my simulator!

hahah Big Cahuna? I am not sure about that...

But its much easier to be an enthusiast than an expert !

I need to get over to Franks and see if you can till open the door to his shop.. Or find out if he has built his way into a corner and needs a diet Pepsi !

Frank has me convinced that WW2 bombers and Diet Pepsi are interconnected .

Fortunately, I have a larger scale replica in my shop (the 14-ft'er)

Removing, then capping the elevators with 1/64" ply

Then adding birch TE to elevators (just like rudder) and blending to the tail

Balsa doublers to reinforce and help shape cockpit walls to the glass.

Much easier and nicer result than vice versa

Cockpit floor will be removable to gain access to both cockpit and nose gear well, so it slides on rails and fixes with little dowel pins forward

It is also, of course, the dirt barrier between the wheel well and the innards and glass of the cockpit, so it should be a snug fit

Dry fit the nose components so you can admire a preview of the mighty bomber's streamlined looks

Glass won't be glued in place until the cockpit details and the underside mechanical components have been installed

Mounting the nosegear UP3, servo and lines in the wheel well. A 3,000 mAh NiCad will eventually be tucked forward, also

I prematurely attach all air lines to keep building dust and paint out of the lines and the mechanisms

Cutting a pattern for the nosegear doors on the fuselage. They should be identical. To keep hinging simple and close-to-scale, hinge line cannot be straight, so has only two hinge points

Buttress fuse edges with 1/4" balsa, as usual

Building the Bellypan:

This is actually a bit complex. It has 4 bomb bay doors and two forward dowels and two rear 1/4" nylon bolts that disattach from the wing separately from the 4 wing-to-fuse bolts

So the rear 1/8" plywood plate that is the foundation of the aft bellypan has 4 large cutouts that fit over the wing bolts and two 1/4" holes for its own bolts

Wax paper the bottom of the wing, obviously, so it won't stick

5 hinge pockets must be perfectly aligned with each other in the vertical and horizontal planes, AND aligned with their mates on the other side, if you want the doors to open and close decently.

Getting this all lined up for both bomb bays took Dwayne, a really fast builder, an entire weekend

He says this will be the last "major building job," and all other tasks will be shorter, although not necessarily easier
