I have been in this shop a couple times.. You can not imagine just how big that building table is !

If something ever rolled to the center you will need to walk out there and get it... Or be suspended from a wire and boom ! hahaha

I was noticing that build table. I'm definitely gonna upgrade mine.

Yes, u2fast, an amazing build.

Just to be clear, I am only the scribe.

Dwayne, the bomber guru, is the builder.

He has been down your way a few times, mostly with B-17's

And yes, he also built his 14-ft B-29 on that table. Plenty of room

Kram,
As promised. We only had 5 bombers at our Warbird last weekend. In the picture of 3 in a row, mine is the closest. I heard that one had crashed a few weeks earlier. I forgot and didn't get a picture of the 4th B-17, American Eagle. Another two in the club didn't show up. Another American eagle was down for refurbishing, the other, Aero-tech 104", just didn't show up.

Great pics.. It looks like a fun day flying.. I never see any B24's around here..

the Ames group has quite a few B17, and 29's in the mix.

The B-24 is from Mike Liable out of Houston. It's a whole lot nicer than any of the B-17's around here. You gotta see it in person to believe the detail. The B-17 with saito 1.00 twins is Organized Confusion, belongs to Gary Smith in our club. B-17 Fuddy Duddy belongs to Randy Larson in our club. In the pic of three B-17s, mine (Liberty Belle) is closest, next is Fuddy Duddy, then Organized Confusion. Brett Bowling out of Dallas brought his American Eagle Memphis Belle, I forgot to get a picture of that one. It was a great Warbird/Scale event. We had 75 pilots and around 225 planes. The only way to see some of my friends is by going to these events. Terry Monroe out of Shreveport Louisiana is working on a DS B-17 and a DS Constellation at the same time. I think he's nuts working two projects like that at once.

Shreveport is having a Warbird August 12 & 13 if anybody wants to meet up there. Probably closer than the Bomber Field B-17 gathering in September.

The whole reason for me following this thread is Mike and I are both gonna be starting DS B-29's late this year or early next year. I gotta clear three builds off the bench first and do some rewiring in my B-17, had some gremlins last weekend that grounded me.

Thanks, Edwin!

Beautiful Birds, all of them!

Yes, the MAIN problem with group B-17 flying is the odds are against all of them being ready to go at once

Love to see a good B-24 flying

A rarely modeled bird, for one so important in the war

Ain't it the truth. I truly thought I was ready for the Warbird. Two months earlier I got three flights in one day with everything working perfectly. I pretty much do 60 minutes of maintenance to 30 minutes of flying.

Our longtime club member, Denny, is a pro videographer and he kinda set me up for this one: not sure the low-angle camera I didn't know about was all that flattering to what I thought was a decent landing, but fun to see it

Field is 600 ft long, obviously shortened a little by tall corn, mat is 340 ft long, wind was SE @ 8 and it appears I over-compensated for crosswind a little

I have brakes, but not great ones that day

Great video. I assume that's the 14' with dle20's? I flew mine last weekend at SETX warbirds in Orange Tx. Got best in show for bringing in a crippled bomber with a dead pilot. I lost an engine, literally. Several smoke passes and a bombing run on a tiger tank.

Holy Smokes!

Is the fuse damage from losing the engine?

Would sure love to see video of that

I have flown B-17's with an outboard dead, but not OFF!

How did it handle and how long did it take you to figure out what happened?

Required a lot of rudder for yaw, aileron for balance and more throttle for power, I assume

Nice job

I saw something fall off and told my spotter to track it. It took a few seconds as the plane got closer, I saw a white spot where a black spot should have been. Had to lean on the rudder with a little aileron. I was pretty high and had to go around. On approach, I throttled back, dove for the runway and dropped gear. Leveled off at about 20' or so and dropped flaps and throttled up a little to keep control. It settled down nicely on a nice long grass runway. Then I had time to think about my shorts. Just the week earlier we lost Randy's B-17 at bomber field. I sure didn't want to loose this one. Never did find the engine. They only got the landing video which looks pretty uneventful.

Edwin, What caused the failure? Was it the bonding, structure? Dan.

We had a member at our field that had something very similar happen after throwing a prop blade, the only thing holding his motor on was the throttle cable and fuel line. Oh, and the missing prop blade was stuck in the inboard engines cowl and muffler.

I would guess prop failure started the problem...

I did some cowl work earlier to reglue the dummy engine back in, it was loose and starting to rattle. We speculate the cowl loosened up, broke a prop blade which hit the windshield, then the imbalance broke off the firewall. Seems to fit the evidence.

I really like the vantage points used to do your video, we gotta copy that. It makes for a great effect.

The unflattering part really only shows up at 25% speed. Look back at the real time portion and you will see this was a very short event.

Kram,
Looks like robart discontinued the 169" B-29 retracts. I'm not fond of CJM, any other alternatives? Would like to avoid making them myself, but if I have to, I can.

I just stumbled across this video of Bomber Field 2015 Warbird. This is the only time we've had all three arca B-17's and Larry's B-24 in the air at once.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vg1yVu...ature=youtu.be

that at was a fun day.

Kram,
My DS 169" plans and parts came in last week. I'm cutting my own parts. I built my work bench extension and have the plans laid out. I'll spend a couple of months going over the plans making a wood parts list. I was wondering if a list already existed?

Id like to know more about the incedence changes. When reducing the wing dihedral, did that change the nacelle braces? And what incedence was the wing set at? I saw that his stab was 0 deg.

Dwayne says: "I bought the full kit-cutter kit and also about $200 of Sig contest grade balsa 5/32 x 48", 4 and 6 in wide and several aircraft ply 12"x48" in 1/32 and 1/8 and 1/4.

Wing incidence on the 1/10 scale is 3 degrees + at the fuse and 0 at the tips and 0 at the stab"
