At Toledo, 2 people talk to me about the nose section. These individuals were working on a real B-17 and made the same identical comment. I assume you were one of the two people?
The problem becomes the published 3 view verse the real airplane. Unless the 3 views shows the flat spot in front of the pilot window, a pilot will get penalized for deviation from the 3 view. I am all for making the nose section as scale as I can but I need documentation.
I deviation from the published 3 view on the "G" nose but I have photo documentation to prove my deviation from the 3 view.

Tony's comments are taken to heart. No one is aware of the hours that I had to devote to the B-17 project to make it happen for Toledo. Tony;s landing gear took a back burner. We have since recovered from the back-log and producing landing gear based on a production schedule.

2171134[/IMG]2171135[/IMG]2171136[/IMG]Thanks everyone for the positive vibes. This is where it starts to get slow. Probably the most comprehensive model I've ever built. I am going to have 4 on board tachometers as well as duel batteries for the receiver. The new electric gear from Century Jet is freaking awesome! I never worry about the gear collapsing. Anyway, I will get some videos online tonight if I can. I would like to show the fuel set up and the landing gear movement. I title these pictures....death by wires!

Edwin, The tachs are to set up the engines as close as possible before flight. Once I am in the air, I can't change them anyway.
Mike, yes. All the windows are included from CJM. I haven't installed all the plastic yet.

Well, I am very happy to say that the maiden flight went great! I am so excited now to start flying this plane on a regular basis. I only needed 5 clicks of down elevator and two clicks of right aileron and the plane was flying great. There are a few little things I am going to "tweak" but all in all I couldn't be happier with the flight. Still have some tweaking to do on the engines and some more "scale stuff" to apply, but we have a good B-17!

Some people have been asking me about the flight and how it went other then "great"! So, some more detail. The airplane had a longer than usual take off run. I found out later that the wheels had started locking up thus causing a "breaking action". This has been fixed. After the plane got in the air, I made a few passed to trim it out. It didn't take much. I usually do not retract the gear on the maiden, but I though since the plane was flying so well, that I would. There were no problems and no flight changes. After making a few passes, I decided it was time to set up for landing. Bringing the flaps to the first notch made no difference. The flaps on full had the same effect. I felt the plane start to sway to the left on my final turn into landing. I had already elected to use the grass for landing with the wheel issue. It wasn't until final approach I noticed my left outboard engine had quit! The plane handled the engine out fine and with rudder was able to make the turn to final with no problems. The landing was a very solid landing. It was a bit harder than I wanted, but the wings had no flex and the landing gear held the plane with no problems. I am looking forward to flying her soon!

B-17 Test Flight
You both could be right. However, PJ mentioned that when the gear and flaps were lowered, there was no rolling tendency.
Look at the attached photos that I don't think were posted. Flaps appear to be down the same angle but I am sure PJ will check this out when he has time this week.
As a side note, I just got the B-17 tires and wheel from PJ. that were on the B-17. One wheel had galled onto the axle to the point the tire rotated on the wheel. I'll bet it was the right wheel and tire because the plane pulled to the right. To correct his issue, we will install a one-piece bushing thru both haves of the wheels. This issue should be resolved.

I decided that it was time to simplify the electronics. I found that I can trust my ear better than the tachs I put in. I was going crazy trying to get them all to sync. perfectly. I decided to rip all of that stuff out and keep it simple. Thanks to the DX-18, I could just run each engine through the radio and adjust everything that way. No need for a matchbox, etc. I think it is much cleaner. I will be doing some more test flights on Friday and will hopefully have some video for you.

How do you have the two motor set up of the DX 18 one is the primary and the other one just as a mix ?
My twin B25 has a twin sinc and it seems to work really well but my Ziroli P 38 I'm trying to use the DX 18 and I'm having a hard time getting with the same RPM throughout the whole range

I use servo match on my DX18. It has 7 way points along the travel that you can sync with. BUT, bear in mind in can only be as accurate as the linkage is tight. You still have to get the mechanical adjustments as close as possible first. There will still always be some variance due to linkage slop and general differences between the engines. Just to clarify, we're talking 4 engines here. When I loose one engine, I just lean a little on the rudder with a bit of aileron.

So, everyone wants a Video huh?!? lol well here is your video. This is the 2nd test flight and I have to say, I can't wait for the 3rd. We are constantly tweaking things on it. I'm excited so far. A few small things I am going to tweak and I will by flying it again!

Hey guys,
Sorry I've been quiet lately. I've been busy at different airshows. The last one I went to was Warbirds over the Rockies. What a beautiful show. I decided even though we are still in the "test flight" stage, I wanted to make a bombay set up. This was really easy. I used a piece of .010 G-10 and ducting tape to make fake "bulkheads". Then I simply screwed it into the plane. After that, I used two hardwood stringers for the actual bomb release mechanism. I have another set of bombs that actually break apart with baby powder inside that simulate an explosion. I will put those on later, but these were simple enough to use and try out for the first time.
We did another test flight after taking out almost a pound of weight! I couldn't believe how much nicer the plane flew! About 3 minutes into the flight #2 engine quite on me. The only way I knew is that I saw the engine quite as the plane flew by. I couldn't believe how she handled. Just a bit of rudder and I continued flying a few laps. Landing was a non issue so we are going to try to go out tomorrow. Hopefully more videos.

I was finally able to get another test flight uploaded to youtube today. After taking more weight out of the nose, I think I have her dialed in just perfect now. In fact, the plane lifted off the ground on its own and climbed out perfectly. When I went to lock the wings in place, I accidentally pinched my air line on one gear. That is why one stayed down. Luckily for me it was in the locked position. I'm still having issues with engine #2 and the last flight, it actually quit. However, on this flight it didn't but would not keep a perfect RPM. Going to look into the ignition module. The good news is that there are no adverse issues during flight with the engine. Well, below is the link. Enjoy.

Old man has shaky hands. Will fire him immediately and get younger stud with steady hands! LOL.
Seriously, don't use standard servos with CID ignition systems and high volt receiver. Standard servos go wild. I think when PJ opened the bombay doors, the standard servo had already released the bombs due to RF and they were sitting on the doors so when the doors opened, them fell out. Ugh!.
As soon as PJ returns from California, we are putting in our new combat module with flashing machine guns in the top and bottom 360 degree turrets. In addition, we are going to install our own CJM bomb release system that gives you the option of singe, dual, and all bombs away per pickle. A real neat system. 3 Way switch on the transmitter. Up position:- Doors close. Center Position--doors open. Down position -- 1, 2, or 4 bombs away. Contact us for more information.
Look close at the tail of the plane on takeoff. Tail comes off the runway within seconds of full power. Takeoff run was around 250 feet. Plane really flies well and has no gyro. PJ said he wasn't using rudder in the turn but who knows. Turret system works great in flight.

Looks really good. Very nice job. I'm fixin to put CH glow ignition on my Saito 100's. A buddy is doing it on his bomber and his bench test run was really promising, no exhaust residue. That's the main reason I'm doing it. The glow exhaust slime is getting on my brakes and making them worthless. That and the paint job will like it.
