On radial engine warbirds I always think Zenoah first. Typical you need the weight up front anyway and Zenoahs are pretty much bullet proof plus they dissipate heat much better than the lighter engines. For inline engine warbirds then I think DA, DLE, RCGF, ..etc.

A G38 is almost 1.75 lbs heavier than the DLE35. if you really want it to haul then a G45 is 2.2 lbs heavier than the DLE35. Even at that you still need lead in the nose to balance but at least it's a lot less.

The Bearcat looks great. I'm definitely considering one for my Zenoah G38. Waiting to see how your maiden flight goes. Good luck,

Guys, she flew!!!!!! Typical warbird, needs nose weight. Don't sweat that.

Flew light, the landing was sooooooo great!!!! A 55 would be great too, but not needed. It was not lacking on power at all. Flew around at half throttle.
It jumped off the ground, 3 clicks of aileron and it tracked like a pattern ship.

I'm so happy. Pics and video coming. This is a winner! Everyone at the field was impressed! Weight is not an issue, with full flaps it almost hovers it flies so slow.

I once did an electric build of a 50cc plane (used a Hacker Q80-7m) and I not only had to place the batteries up in the cowl under the motor, I had to use 8000maH packs just to get the CG close.
I'm just not sure it's practical in this plane. I may be wrong, who knows.

The batteries can be slid all the way to the back of the firewall. Even if you have to add weight, I dont see a problem. I had a 82" T-6 I converted to electric, with the battery on the firewall it still need a couple pounds of lead. Shouldnt be an issue.

TEASER!

Debrief, on the high speed taxi run I could tell with just half throttle it was light on its feet, with full takeoff power it took off very predictable, nice climb out with only 3 clicks of aileron trim needed.

Cleaned up it cruised around great at half throttle! Full throttle climb out was great, a 35 is enough power, a 50 would be even better with a big scale 4 blade on it! But I have zero complaints.

Flaps are very effective, I didn't see one bad habit at all, with full flap slow flight it would keep going straight. I landed in light winds with half flaps and it slowed down for a nice 3 pointer.

Cant wait to fly it again.

Awesome! I think I'm going to stick with the 40 twin. I have a DLE 55ra I was considering for the noise weigh. Guess I have to find some lead though. Will be taking off work tomorrow to get a full day of work in.

Nice Maiden flight!!!!!!!!!!!! A few more fights and you might be able to transfer some weight and lose some of that 3.5lbs. When you think about it losing that 3.5 pounds will put you close to the specs of the plane.

You're probably right.
Just have an aversion to adding dead weight to an airplane, especially a wooden airframe on a grass field
I'll wait and see how someone else does with an electric build...

Most rc warbirds need weight, nothing you can do about that. Just how it is with short nosed radial warbirds. You cant tell in flight that it has it.

JohnVH....I just happened to be on the VQ models web site.I was trying to find out information on what type of covering their using. I ended up sending a email, so we will see just how good and quick their customer service department handles my request. I did notice that the F8F Bearcat in one of the pic's had the ignition module aft of the fuel tank.I will attach the pic seems the tank could be slided back closer to CG as well.just brainstorming getting ready to pull the trigger as soon as I find out what covering works with this aircraft because I plan to use a retractable tail wheel. If I don't find out the color I will think of a contrasting color in it's stead............................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................

With the need for nose weight, sliding things closer back to cg is not what you want to do. Id be curious to see how others come out, maybe I got a heavy one.

My cg was right around the 6" mark IIRC

Maybe you can get them to send you an extra sheet of the covering, its sticky back, like a sticker. It comes with a full page of it.
