Well, the engine has a hypnotic sound, but not much power. Too bad. I know that the DLE 55 side-exhaust will do the job with a 4-blade in any case.

Should be under 20 lbs. Guys who are using a 30cc engine are adding several pounds of lead to the nose to get the CG right.

I completed the engine installation today. The cowl mounting blocks are a weak point and need reinforcement. I added 1/16" ply around them as shown. I had half the blocks break during cowl fitting. If one breaks in the air the cowl will likely be destroyed.

I flew the Bearcat today and it is everything I hoped it would be. The first flight was with the 4 blade prop. This flight was cut short due to the engine going over redline temperature. I have the alarm set for 150C (300F) and the engine reached about 155C max. I'm not sure if it would have continued to get hotter if I had continued the flight. I may try it again and see if the temp stabilizes below 160C.

The next 3 flights were with a 22x10 wood prop and the max temp reached was 148C, with the average temp around 140C. The plane performed very well as you would expect. Smooth and stable with nice aerobatic capability. The Saito radial provides just the right speed and power for great flying fun.

The only glitch today was a hinge on one of the inner gear doors pulled out.

I have ten flights on the Bearcat and I love this plane! It flys as good as or better than my Top Flite giant scale P-47 and P-51. The Saito engine is the perfect match for this plane and gives plenty of speed and power for big warbird style aerobatics. The plane does every maneuver that you would expect a warbird to perform and a few more to boot. Everyone who sees it fly is awed.

The plane provides remarkable value....good construction and assembly, a beautiful cockpit with detailed instruments and pilot, and a great covering job; and the optional retracts are working flawlessly. Nothing bad to say for a $600 warbird.

Default Saito 60cc three cylinder

After receiving the Bearcat and estimating 3# or more nose weight, I've decided my Hacker Q80-14xs motor will not be enough to fly the way I am used to. I like the weight an sound of the Saito 60cc three cylinder.

Default modifications

I have installed pull-pull rudder cables, 1/16" carbon fiber elevator rush rods and epoxy in control horns with ball linkages. I probably saved maybe 2oz tail weight but hope to have solid control surfaces. Sorry, some of the pictures are somewhat fuzzy. I used some 12" and 24" long drill rods for modifications to the bulk heads for installation of cable guide tubes. I made a new rudder control horn and used extra hinges with the rod.

'll be assembling one of these for a friend this winter. I'd like to study the assembly manual but cannot find it online. Requested a pdf from JB Hobbies but they never bothered to reply. Can anybody help? I like to do my homework first!

My first Bearcat was completely destroyed a few months ago (plane and engine both total loss). After licking my wounds I decided that this was a plane that I really wanted so I ordered another one and a new FG60. Here is the "Bearcat Part Deux" ready to go.
