Default 1.2 glow vs. gas engine

I have a P-51 with a recommendation of a .91 to 1.20 four stroke glow engine. I want to put a gas engine on it. I"m wondering what the maximum size gas engine would equal a 1.20 four stroke glow engine. I have been advised that I should use a 30cc gas but that seems a bit too big for this plane. Any advise would be appreciated as I am just getting into the gas world. Thanks all.

A 1.20 is the equivalent of 20cc's which should be plenty for your Mustang. I would agree that a 30cc gasser would be too much, both in power and weight. I am running a 20cc Evolution gasser as well as a DLE 20 and both have proven to be quality, user friendly engines.

Good luck!

I know of two P-51's in your size range. Fast but work well, the 20's are usually beam mounted like glow engines in that size range thus the mounts usually work from the start. Most 30 cc's are on standoffs.........

I'm flying a TF P-51 with a DLE 20 and soon it will be replaced with an RA. This plane is good for 100mph or more with a 16x10 APC prop. The flight time is great because these engines just sip gas.
The nitro engines like a 120 or 160 OS are really nice engines too but maybe the determining factor could be fuel cost plus ease of use. I have had a 160 for many years in a GP Stearman and it ran great, very reliable, but if the fuel was old or a different nitro percentage it effected performance immediately. With gas it's always basically the same, 92 ethanol free gas with Klotz at 36:1.
So my preference is a gas 20cc class engine and preferably the DLE 22RA for its compact and clean installation.
By the way, the 35 and 55 RA's are pretty awesome for money and performance.

Which Mustang ARF are you working on? Is it the Strega from Phoenix?

Thanks for the help. I ended up with an Evolution 20cc and have just run the engine once. Hope to fly the plane next time out if I can get the retract issue resolved.
