Let's see.....just a little quick mental calculus here:

If Sam says "4-5 days' work," how long would it take me to have that ARF ready to fly?

Mark,
Hey, I only put in half days (12 hours!): actually, I was working closer to 15 hours (who's anal!).
====
Tim,
With most flyins, half the fun is the camaraderie.
==========
Top flite F4U.
With all that vibration, I drilled holes in the surface where the cowl mounts are glued to the fire wall for better adhesion.
For fewer wires to connect, I put the air valve on the wing.
I used servo screws to align the cowl to the fuse. The alignment was done with the dummy radial in the cowl to insure the radial would fit properly and not be out of alignment which happens when I try to put it in on last.
Cowl had to be butchered up pretty good to fit around the engine and muffler: at least I won't have to worry about the engine overheating!
Hysol and button head screws used to secure the cowl to the cowl mount frame.
Viton used for guts of provided tank, regular gas line used on outside. Will have to get some of that new flexible fuel line.
Used left over parts of B-25 for fuel service.
Ignition done: had to route plug wire to other side for dummy radial.
Nice cockpit kit provided, all painted.
Tomorrow, test the engine.
I'm leaving the decals off until a few flights to see if I have to fix any wrinkles. Decals and a heat gun never work well together.

Tower just posted a new Pheonix 95" spitfire.
TowerHobbies.com Phoenix Model 1:4 3/4 Spitfire GP/EP ARF
I've put an order in for it as it looks pretty nice and also very 'cost effective'.
It comes with retracts and spinner:
I've always heard bad stuff about gear supplied gear and, looking at the manual, the spinner appears to be plastic.
This plane is very light for a 95" plane and hoping the gear is strong enough for it.
As for spinners, it may be difficult to find a matching aluminum one.
Need opinions on Phoenix models, gear and spinner.
thanks,
sam

ALL DONE.
Balance needed some lead weight.
Glued in the dummy radial and screwed on the canopy.
Re-binded and getting 6500 RPM's on a Mejzlik 21X11.5N on DA-50.
Glued up the included plane stand. Nice to have 'no worry' airplane to fly.

I saw a lot of "Americana" over the past three weeks as well.
Drove from the Seattle area to Greenville Ohio, then to Cincinnati for five days, Madison Indiana for a day and then back to Cle-Elum Washington for another five days before heading back home. Covered 13 states and around 6000 miles of interstates and backroads during the trip. Only states we missed, north of I-80 anyway, were North Dakota, Wisconsin and Michigan. Hit one heck of a storm just east of Rapid City SD while headed back home, had high winds, rain, dust and hail. We didn't get the hail or dust, fortunately for me. We saw two factory new Airstream camp trailers that were ruined by wind and hail, a semi flatbed trailer on it's side with the storage building that had been on it upside down in the ditch along side of I-90, just to name a couple of people having bad afternoons.

I'd like to do that, one of these days.

I don't know if this looks hokey but I did it. Black felt tip marker to make panel lines and rivets. At least it will make the observer distracted from the fact that it's an ARF and monokoted! Not sure how well it will hold up: alcohol removes it but I use 409 to clean my planes.

Final rivets.
I applied the remaining rivets between the panel lines. I used double lines to 'represent' the cloth on the wings and tail feathers.

I used a soft pencil to mark the rivet location lines.
I'm guessing the front of the fuse was welded as there are no rivet patterns on the template so I left them off the plane.
This is a 'representation' of the rivets as adding every rivet makes it too busy (in my opinion).
I'm guessing it took about 4 hours to do this: a lot faster than the 130 hours to put aluminum tape and rivets on one of my 'builds'!
template that I used.

Had a few small wrinkles to iron out when left in 89 degrees in the backyard.
Only put on the stars and stripes for now. The decals are pre-cut out an 1/8" past the decal: I found it best to trim back to the edge of the decal to not see the 'outline'.

There was suppose to be a flyin at Celina, Ohio but their web site showed nothing and inquires produced no response so I went to one of my local clubs and flew there.
I had to maiden the F4U anyway so it worked out well.
It appears that the RF 'donuts' (white circles) that I put on my wire extensions leaving the receiver actually work. I usually put them on all the wires but left them off the flaps and gear on the F4U. Saturday, I range checked the plane rotating it 360 degrees ,stopping every 90 degrees for range checking and all was good. Immediately after take off, the flaps went down and gear went up by themselves and the engine died about 2/3 of the first circle. Had to belly in the bean field but only some minor fixes. Left the JR receiver on and got my data checker out and all reading were zeros so transmitter link to receiver as excellent. The spark plug wire was detached: it could have come off in the belly landing but, with the long exhaust pipes, I figured I didn't put it on very well.
Next day, and also with donuts on the gear and flap wires, she flew with no problems and put 4 flight on her. Even with 2.4, I've always figured it was cheap insurance to add the RF 'donuts' to the wires and, without them, I'm sure I wouldn't have had aileron or elevator control and would have lost the plane. I've got sullivan plastic golden rods for the throttle and choke servos so no interference would travel along those lines. There are different receiver and engine batteries plus the batteries are a good 9" from each other. It shows how damaging engine interference can be to our servos and extensions.
Some of the scale planes at the field.
The white foamy jet has a turbine. The blue jet: don't see many that are built up from plans.

hanger rash.
I'm seeing a lot of disadvantages of a non-glassed plane with monokote!
During the assembly of the plane, the front, bottom of the fuse was re-enforced so the carrying rack wouldn't damage it. Now the back, bottom of the fuse got some stress cracks from the carrying rack. Had to open up the monokote, use my dentist's old metal picks to align the wood and thin CA the area. Had some old blue monokote from a decade ago to cover the area: doesn't match the color but close enough for the bottom of the plane.

A few places had some small wrinkles: I'm guessing any stress incurred during the flight separates the monokote from the balsa sheeting.

You know what they say about an ARF, it's either Almost Ready to Fly or Almost Ready to Fix. You might be money ahead to strip it down and rework the structure as needed and recover it so you know what you've got. BTW, I've never seen a NAVY bird that had the paint match everywhere after the first few weeks of flying missions. I can say that since I spent three years working on Prowlers and going on two deployments on the USS Kitty Hawk where every plane that wasn't just delivered from the factory or NARF had mismatched paint. Having the mismatched Monokote isn't a bad thing in this case

July 13-15. Air supremacy over Goshen, Indiana.
miles: 212
One of the warbird campaign organization.
It's been a great 'ride' so far, this summer.
I've been to a lot of fantastic fields, including this one. 1000' all grass (really longer since it's part of the full size airport's runway).
Got there on Wednesday and had a 10X20' pre-rented tent when I got there (can't beat 75 bucks for a solid tent with sides).
Over 100 pilots so lots of great airplanes.
