TF P-47 ARF (cont)
Once in awhile you get lucky!
Put her all together to test all surfaces and engine test: all's good with no changes with even the engine trim exactly where I want it. 6500 RPM's.
Learning curve with monocote:
Left her in the sun to bake and wrinkle so I could iron them out. Found those big wrinkles need a lite touch with the iron so one doesn't make permanent folds in the surface.
CG needed a 1/16" lead sheet 3"X12".
Out to the field, tomorrow, to maiden her.

Sure went together quickly. Good luck with the maiden.

Maiden,
Got her down in one piece with no damage but things did not go well. After how well the TF corsair flew, I was expecting the P-47 to fly great.
First off, I had way too much 'up' in the elevator and the plane took off in probably 20', which was scary.
The plane was very 'twitchy' and, one time, I got her too slow and she snapped: fortunately, I was high enough and recovered.
On landing, I put the flaps down on final approach and she ballooned on me so I went around and landed without flaps. Came in hot but landed OK: thick grass and, just at the end, when she was going slow, she just settled on her nose, with no damage to plane or prop.
The top hatch came off, couldn't find it but only cost 20 bucks for a new one.
I must be doing something wrong as others have the P-47 and they fly great.

Every once in awhile, you do something stupid!
Been flying all year with no problems: until Sunday.
After the maiden on the P-47, decided to fly the corsair.
On take off, it went from the paved runway to the grass and I thought she would be OK, but the grass caught the left wheel and pulled the gear mount out.
A little learning curve with these lite ARF's that weigh about half of what my Ziroli weigh plus smaller wheels. I also find that clubs with paved runways don't maintain the grass as well as clubs with all grass so the grass had a lot of drag.
Anyway, both wood mounts pulled out. I think the FG cloth glassing in the wheel well helped reduce damage to just the mounts.
TF put nylon rods in the mounts to ribs so they did a good job of securing them: I just put too much pressure on them.
The nylon rods were keeping me from pushing the mounts back onto the ribs so I had to cut some holes in the sheeting for clamping purposes. There wasn't room for regular C clamps so these 'jaw' clamps did the job very well.
Wanted to make sure the mounts were secure so I used hysol to secure them.

TF P-47 ARF

Made a 'wing' bag for the wing and some for the tail surfaces as I always seem to be hitting those when loading the trailer! Some felt liner inside allows use of the 'hook' side of velcro to be used to keep the tail surface covers from sliding off the plane.
While leaving the hatch in the sun to remove wrinkles, the hatch widened and wasn't fitting properly on the fuse. I cut a slot in the formers and re-glued the formers. It's possible this broke which would cause the hatch to fly off in flight.

TF P-47 ARF
Got some help from pilots who have the TF P-47.
Suggested I add more nose weight so I doubled the weight with another 1/16"X3"X12" of lead.
Also, need down elevator of about 1/16" and 1/8" for half and full flaps.
They suggested 10% and 20% mix but I needed 20% and 30% to get maybe a 1/16" and about 3/32" on full flaps.
Sinked the elevator to have the same 2 second servo movement as the flaps.
Used some expansion foam in the belly pan in case I need to belly land her.

TF P-47 ARF.
Half the fuse is done with panel lines and rivets.
As with the F4U, nothing fancy but at least it detracts from the fact that the plane has monokote!

Aug 5-6, Circus at Butler county airport in Butler county, Ohio.
Miles: 10.
My local GCRCC club puts on an annual show for the general public each year (57 years).
Very high participation by club members using their planes for the 11:30 am - 4 PM show with events changing every 8-10 minutes for the public. Bulk of donations given to a local charity ($6500 this year). About 200 planes used by the members.
From Saturday's crowd, I'm guessing around 3000-4000 came to the show on Saturday (too early for Sundays show).

Poor decision:
Having the gear valve and servo 'sticking out' on the wing creates storage problems in the trailer so it was moved to the fuse along with a electrodynamic's quick connect was used for the flaps and ailerons.

Both the club participation and local turnout are quite impressive. That takes a lot of work.

TF P-47 ARF decals.
After letting her sit in the sun a few times, I think all the wrinkles are 'gone' so the decals were applied.
There's, like, a double layer of plastic, plus the paper on these decals. Soaking for a good hour resulted in no easy separation.
Had to use tweezers on the corner and scrape the 2nd layer of plastic and paper from the top layer decal.
Putting the 'pealed' decal back in the water allowed easy positioning of the decal on the surface. Some paper towels and bondo applicator removed the sub surface water.
Compound curves required a new X-acto knife to make multiple cuts along the edge for a good fit: as along the rudder TE.
The cowl decal also required some multiple cuts around the edges to get a clean finish with no wrinkles. The decal cuts overlaid each other to, virtually, make the cut invisible (and better than a wrinkle!).
The stars-n-stripes along the turbo charger inlets also needed cutting to lay flat over it.
And, yes, I put the VF up front on both sides and the T to the rear, as it is suppose to be (contrary to 'normal' logic and making it the same 'left to right').

Aug 17-19, Warbirds and classics at Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin.
miles: 550
An all grass 1300'X300' runway.
For this multi-day events, I got there on Tuesday and left Sunday. Everything is set up early for flying.
Being a part of the 'warbird alliance', the trend seems to be renting large tents for your planes: fly late, leave planes and equipment in tent (with side walls) and easy, quick coverage, should rain come.
144 pilots and, needless to say, a vast array of great, unusual and 'one of a kind' planes.

Thank for sharing the pics Sam; I was up on Friday as a spectator enjoying the flying.
I'm looking forward to the day when I don't have to do the 8-5 thing 5 days a week and I can take in and fly at the warbird events.
Need to get a trailer set up before then.
