Hi Chuck:

Thank you for your reply and info.
Good idea to check the guide tubes for smooth operation and alignment. I'll do a rough fit to see how things line up.
Agreed, now's the time to make the adjustments.
Thanks again.

Best regards
Randy

What sort of bolts, what size, and what are they threading into?

I was referring to the wing retaining bolts in the wing joiners.
The threads in the joiner stripped out . The joiner is very soft aluminum.

There is a thread on the Top Flite Corsair ARF that addresses this issue with clarity. I followed the instructions and the repair worked well. I used threaded brass inserts that I JB welded into the wing and the appropriate sized socket head bolts for the new retainers. No problems since.

That’s right, I posted that fix in the Corsair thread and it should work well for the Hellcat too.

Hi Chris:

Would you happen to recall the Corsair thread name and your post number outlining the fix.

Thanks
Randy

It’s post #673, I included the Mc Master Carr page info from the inserts I used on my Corsair.

Before anyone goes drilling into the wing please check and understand the construction of the wing. This insert fix works very well in the Corsair but I have not done it on the Hellcat.

Hi Chris:

Thanks for the post info.
Agreed, just looking at options for now.
Before any mods I'll follow it through a few times to make sure it's a successful mod.

Best regards

Almost done with mine. I thought it might be a good idea to get an extra canopy and wingtip lenses just in case I suffer some hanger rash. Both of these items are already discontinued! Perhaps a Ziroli canopy might fit if I really need one some day. I am disappointed, as you know the covering was never available (except for the dark blue and that does not even match well). I will post some pics of mine when I am done. I did a lot of mods to it.

I am working on the RTC version and had the same thoughts about ordering a spare canopy. If you determine the Ziroli canopy will work, please let me know.
Thanks!

Great work! If you get a moment, post some pics and describe your mods. I’m just a sting weekend away from finishing my P-47 and then I’ll jump on my Hellcat! Can’t wait!

You would all be better off with the Don Smith canopy since it is the same size as the TF airplane. The Ziroli Hellcat is a much bigger airplane.

Chuck,
My RTC Hellcat has the same pushrod binding issue for both elevators and the rudder. Did you cut a slot behind where the pushrod tub exits the fuselage?
Thanks,
John

Yes, that is what I did.

You also have the option of using the next size smaller music wire. It is much stronger than the supplied wire even when thinner. Solder on a threaded coupler at the tail end and you are good to go.

Good idea. The stock rods are 4-40. I just tried a 2-56 push rod and it still binds. I can see that the outer tube takes a visible bend just prior to the exit hole which is the binding point.

I think I would ask for a replacement fuselage particularly when the price of the plane is considered.

I had a similar problem with my TF Giant P-47. I was able to uncover the auxiliary holes and use them. The servos placement came out a little different, but certainly usable.

Left side, elevator only

Right side, elevator upper and aft of the rudder pushrod exit. This allowed for much better function of the stock pushrods without significant binding.

This photo shows what servos I had to move around to get this configuration to work. The left column bank of servos from top to bottom will be left elev, right elevator, AS3000 stabilizer, throttle, and choke. The right column bank of servos has an AMA name address and phone number plate where that paper is covering it, the tail wheel steering servo, and the rudder servo on the bottom. Not stock arrangement, but clean and works fine.

GOOD LUCK!

The controls in the Hellcat I purchased used seem to move without binding. I'm glad of that. It is all ready to go. Didn't get to fly it before the "lock down," so don't know when it will be. I installed an Xoar 21-10 three blade prop. I think it looks better, but I'll put the 22-10 two blade back on before the test flight. I opened up the upper cowl flaps. Additional air flow can't hurt.

Great looking Hellcat! I hope this social distancing need passes soon so we can get back to life under the new normal.

Was the flap joiner tab in your ARF glued into the outboard wing section flap. (They are not pre-installed in the RTC model.)

Did you guys balance with the gear up or down? The manual only says to balance inverted with an empty fuel tank. The illustration shows the gear up and the drop tank on.
