I have a friend that uses a Saito 60cc in his Top Flite P-47. Great sound and a better than scale flight character. I imagine the Hellcat would do fine unless you want a lot of vertical and more speed.

I don't know what it weighs. He's been flying it for several years. His RCU handle is "radfordc." Perhaps he can chime in and answer. I'll take a guess and say 25 pounds.

How about a long extension off the front of the engine so the radial can sit way back?

The issue with that is that it may make the plane tail heavy. You have to remember, the full sized plane had the short nose due to the weight of the P&W R-2800, an engine that was far from lite. Come to think about it, all the fighters that used the 2800 had them mounted fairly close to the leading edge of the wings. The Corsair was no different, other than the fact the cockpit was located further back, giving the impression of a long nose

3” is about it per the attachment above. I wouldn’t put spacers between the thrustwasher and the prop.

Hey Bill.. you think the FG 60 will fly this OK? I mostly like to fly scale and I dont need to go Mach III with my hair on fire.. Just looking for scale flight and some nice photo passes.

Bill, In my opinion the FG-60 would be fine. There is a video on utube of an FG-60 in a TF zero and looks like it flies it very well. The Zero and the Hellcat are similar in weight, (zero 27lbs/HC 27lbs and wing loading (Zero 46-50oz, HC 42-46 oz.

Also videos of the FG-60 on the TF P-47 also a good combo but the P-47 is lighter (21.5lbs)with a lighter wing loading 37oz.

I stopped by the LHS this evening just asking around and the guy there said that usually a multi cylinder wont pull the kind of power that a single cylinder will, that the FG 60 would be more like a 55 CC and the Hellcat being around 27 pounds might be a bit underpowered with it. He said it would fly it but you would be spending most of the flight at 3/4 to full throttle and you could get into trouble if you need power quick.. a lot to think about so I may sideline this project for a bit. On a side note, sitting on the shelf there was a 15cc Hellcat ARF.. I did not know Horizon had put that out.. been doing the Harley thing all summer and have not flown this year. I am biked out so I am getting some planes around now but that would be an interesting project.

Bill, your LHS guy is correct but the HC calls for a 55-60cc engine.

There is a Difference between the FG60 (4.6hp, 6.7K rpm on a 22x10 prop) and the DLE55 (5.5hp, 8.5K rpm on a 22x10 prop) and big difference price. But the FG-60 in my opinion would be fine, of course your decision. That radial sound is awesome.

I'm working on a review on the 15cc, great flying little guy, looks good, only bummer is no flaps.

Haven’t made a decision yet on engines or whether to go with air or electric retracts.

Everyone says how simple air is, and I'm fighting chasing air leaks in my big Corsair, I already priced out converting them to Down and Locked electrics.

The E-Flite electrics on my big Mustang have been flawless

Yeah, finding air leaks can be a pain. I’m sure you already know to do this but I use a couple of forceps to close off portions of the system. For example, if I close off the tail wheel and the system holds air then the leak is in the TW.

Yea, its just tedious. I think one or more of the cylinders need ring kits

I have it isolated to extended side, now I need to find out where. Glycerin ointment added to some dish soap makes a big bubble where its leaking, its the stuff they use with the hoops to make those 8 foot long sleeve bubbles.

I've had great luck using Bob Violett's "Thin Lube for O-rings." BVM part #PA-MA-0004. I add it to new retracts and treat it annually thereafter.

No more problems.

M

Will install light covers toward the end of the assembly.
Been doing some work on the HC. Got the wing lights installed and working. I put some foil tape in the recessed areas to make the lights even brighter.

Aileron and flap servos (Hitec 645MGs) installed.

Typical Top Flite ARF assembly.... no issues.

Tight fit! Don’t even have the hold down screws in.

Top is aluminium wing alignment tube, Center is pre installed wing spar (super fit), bottom is the alignment dowl I had to sand for a no so tight fit

Alignment dowl

Got some work done today, installed/epoxied the wooden wing alignment dowl and aluminum (aluminium for our British friends) tubes. The thick aluminum wing spars in the center sections were pre-installed as was the receiving pocket in the outer wing panels. I held my breath as I slid them together. If you have the H9 60cc Mustang, you know what I mean. But not to worry....perfect alignment.

Had to do a little work on the wood wing dowels so the fit wasn’t that tight.

Doing some work on the Hellcat. Got the wings about done and horizontal stabilizers installed to check the fit. Fit is good.

Measured wing to horizontal stab on both sides to ensure correct alignment, checks good.

After going through engine options, I decided to go with a Zenoah G62. G62 pulls my TF FW-190 around just fine. Should also do well in the Hellcat.

Have also decided to go with the Robart air system. Another tried and try set-up.

Dang! I was hoping you would put the FG 60 in it so we could get a personal review!😁
