Post maiden photo of my Top RC FW 190. I made Walter Nowotny's plane. Flew great with a DLE 111, Sierra Retracts, and 58 degrees of flaps which is what the full scale used. I installed a IFlyTallies cockpit. After the second flight I discovered hair line cracks in the empenage so I cut open the bottom of the plane last night and put carbon fiber mat all the way around the inside of the empenage. The stock gear doors handled the thick grass at our field as you can see in the photo.

Very small light cracks on the side of the fuselage between the front of the rudder and the rear fuselage former. you can see the carbon fiber mat I added to the inside of the fuselage. I cut one piece of mat and used 30 minute epoxy to glue it in place.

I used wet sanding to remove the decals. They are clear coated so be patient. Once you get through the clear coat you will know it because the decal comes off very quickly.

I used the 1/5 scale cockpit. I put a plywood panel behind the instrument panel cut to fit the fuselage like a former. I removed the entire Top RC cockpit and put in a new floor made out of G10 Fiberglass. I had to trim the formers back that were in the cockpit but the new floor is attached to both sides of the fuselage which adds plenty of additional rigidity. Good Luck..

Ground loop Problems
Need some help here. I'm using the TopRC Models tail gear and Sierra main gear. Using the springs to allow the tail gear to retract as seen in the earlier posts, the plane ground loops after landing. Wondering if anyone else has this problem or maybe my springs are not strong enough or maybe a better way? Thanks

How many degrees of flap are you using? Landing on grass or pavement? Is the ground loop always in the same direction?

The reason I asked those questions was because it sounds like you may be carrying to much speed into your landing. I have been using 48 degrees of flap which I believe is what the full scale used. I scrub off enough speed that the plane almost 3 point lands and thus rolls a very short distance. I will admit that I have a pull-pull from my rudder to my tail wheel steering arm but I use the tail wheel steering for take off. When I land the plane is rolling so slow that I just let it roll out. Again I would try more flap to get the plane to scrub off more speed. It's very stable and can handle a very slow speed landing. Let me know how it goes. Good Luck

Here is a photo right before touching down. You can see how much flap I have and the tail down attitude indicating this will be close to a three point landing.

I am using the Sierra tail gear. I have a pull-pull between my rudder and tail wheel control horn with no springs. If you are ground looping with the tail wheel on the ground I would consider getting rid of the springs.

The FG90 is more powerful than the 84 for sure. It would be nice to see a FG90 in this size warbird. I’m testing that engine in my friends Mulligan scratch built plane and it pulls really hard and feels like a cam or second blower speed kicks in on the top end, it’s a beast. I’ll be flying that plane soon so I can report first hand on its performance in flight. The FG84 is nice but the 90 is just that much better. But can it fly this heavy warbird with authority?

Thanks Guys, this is my dilemma. Can always use a little more power. Like Chris said, "Will the FG90 have authority"? Definitely has the easiest maintenance of all radials and cheapest on the market when compared to UMS and Moki. I will take my time an await Chris test with his friends plane. Hopefully someone is further along that is using a radial.
