RE: Great Planes P-51D Mustang 40 ARF Engine size?
Haz, I've owned two of them powered by a Enya .61 and Super Tigre S-61K with retracts. Both flew very well, I have talked about them in a number of posts. The jist of which is that a 2c .61 will fly it with authority but it brings with it aprox. ½ pound of wt. and great vertical. A 2c .46 (a good one will give you the same speed, be ½ # lighter and still have 400ft vertical (not unlimited). If I build another it will get the .46 but that is just my 2 cents.
Good luck

What 46 would you put in it? Or what abought a Magnum XL-61RFS 4-Stroke or Magnum XL-80RFS 4-Stroke The 61 4stroke is 15.5oz but the 80 is 22.2 ozs.

How timely.
Also looking at engine selection for this bird. Have a Magnum .61 Pro sitting on my bench yearning for a home. Anyone have advice (past experience) as to wedging in an engine this size? Wondering specifically about how much I will have to chop up the cowl etc. Thinking of aftermarket exhaust to avoid the huge pipe hanging out the side also but the cost/time may make it more atractive to just get a new and smaller engine.
Thoughts?

Haz,
I have an older modeled GP P-51 ARF that I bought from a friend and he had a OS 46 FX with a pitts style muffler in it. The motor is mounted on its side and runs great. Flies really well too. Fast and with power to spare. But it also flies it scale to. I havent gotten a chance to fly it yet but before buying it I saw it fly and if anything ever happened to the engine I would put another 46 FX in it. Hope that helps you out.

Great advice fellas, thanks.
I should get the kit early next week. Will do a little thinkin and mock up work to check the fit etc. The .40 to .47 engines are relatively inexpensive BUT more expensive than what is already on my bench without a home.
If it looks like a decent fit I may just go with what I have. If it looks like it will require lots of cutting "I guess I just have to buy a new engine and slimline muffler Honey".[8D]

I have a TT .46 Pro in mine, it has been my main bird this past summer. Doesnt have unlimited vertical, but is putting out 7lbs of thrust on an 11x6 prop. The plane weighs in a 6.75 lbs. 1:1 more or less. It does have good vertical for scale manuevers and still flies pretty fast straight and level. Even with the smaller 46 side mounted with a Pitts, the cowl has to be cut up more then I would have liked.

Like I said I had two the first with an Enya .61 had an over all weight of 7# with all the radio and everything else as it was layed out in the plans. The second was highly modified to reduce the ballest in the first one. The elevator and rudder servos were mounted under the hori stab among meny other changes that brought the weight down to 5.75#. Both engines were mounter horizontal and I highly recommend that.
The first one still exists while the second sacomed to a rocky mistake, tightening up a turn onto final. I have no doubt this plane can fly very well on a 40 but I would recoment the OS .46 FX (16.5oz w/muffler) or the Super Tigre GS-45 (18.5oz w/Muffler). The Super Tiger has a muffler that can be positioned to fit the horizontal mount without having to spend money for a after market muffler.
Good luck

I had one last year and used a OS 70FS in it. It flew great and sounded incredible........until an inverted low pass, then into a million pieces.
that whole Push up thing got me[X(]
I think you would be very happy with that engine .
Just my 2 cents

Chriscru is right. He has my old mustang, and I flew the hell out of it and that .46 was just enough. A .61 would do better for over all performance but the .46 keeps it "real" Chris ...CALL ME!

Mine flew great on a OS 46FX, enough power for sure.
The extra power to weight ratio for a .61 size engine isn't
warranted and costs more and uses more fuel. IMO

SO now iam thinking abought a 46 size eng. I got the plane today and it does seem heavy. I live here in New Mexico at an alt of abought 5000ft above sea level. Would that make any difference between a 46 and 60 size engine.

Great looking bird.
Is that the ARF or the Kit. IF it is the ARF did you strip all of the covering and recover?
Mine should be here Monday or Tuesday. Then I can jump in. My magnum is an older SE Pro (about ten years I think). Just finished breaking it in so it is basically brand new. Will see how it looks and if is not too big or does not need ecessive chopping I will probably use it. Hard to beat the price as I already have it and I paid a fraction of the new cost of even a .40.
Will have to keep Paladin's advice on the ST in mind if I do decide to buy. Thanks!

I am sure it is more scale in performance but already have the Magnum. Buying new is more expensive than that!
Thanks for the advice!

GrumpE,
Thanks for the compliment.
It is the kit built with full sheeting and glassed with Polycrylic and 3/4oz glass. Panel lines, rivets, 3/4 cockpit, wing guns, mechanical retracts and airbrushed. Quite a lot of detail for a 40 size bird.

RE: Great Planes P-51D Mustang 40 ARF Engine size?
I have flown the kit built one with a Jett .50, an OS .65VRDF. an OS 1.20 Surpass II, and a YS 1.40. As far as flight characteristics, it was very gentle and forgiving with all of these engines. The only real difference the engine size made was top speed and vertical performance. The additional weights are handled quite well by the wing, in fact, the one with the Y.S. 1.40 has a clipped wing. Sure a .40 or .46 will fly the plane but performance will be diminished.
