Cowl Cut-out
Could some of you guys post pics of the cuts you had to make in the cowling for the H9 P-51. I am getting ready to install a Saito 91 and was wanted to get an idea of what it would look like. Will this engine get enough air to stay cool if I just cut a hole for the cylinder head? (and the intake below the spinner)
Thanks in advance, Chris
p.s. Has anyone flown this engine/plane combo yet? Just wondering what kind of performance to expect- I know Jeff said the 100 was a little too much power

Excellent advice!
I should get my H9 P51 in a day or so.
I will be doing some mods and strengthing as well thanks to you guys and your great advice.
I will be installing my Saito 100 and probably go with the factory retracts to start.
Hope to give a report soon.
Later,

Overkill
Hey Bentwing,
Yeah, I am sure it will be overkill, but I already own the engine and it's Broke In!!
Say, I would be curious to know what muffler set up you guys with the Saito 100 have been using??? Did you use the stock set up or get a pitts style???

I noticed that everyone is using Saito/JR equipment. Please don't miss understand. I'm just an OS/Futaba kinda guy. Anyone using this equipment in the H9 P51? If not, do you see any problems (other than personal preference) in using an OS and/or Futaba?

Currently Assembling my P-51
For what it's worth, I've a Saito 100 earmarked for this bird, I've changed the retracts to 3/16" Spring Air (part number 116), the wheels are being changed to Sullivan's (with the aluminum hubs) and I will run an onboard glow starter.
I can't wait to get her going!

Retracts
I've posted a photograph of the Spring Air retracts. In order for them to fit cleanly, you need to take a little wood from the leading and trailing edge of the retract bay and that means carefully taking off the plastic wheel bay. The wheel bay will need modified around the retract too.
More pics as I continue assembly....

Great photo
Hey Scotty,
Nice work. Looks like a real improvement. Keep us posted and keep the photos coming. Should have my model today, but leave on sunday for a short vacation. I will spread the ARF out on the bench and absorb what I have to work with.

I have an OS 1.20 Surpass III with pump in mine and I am using a Futaba 8UAFS radio and all Futaba Standard servos. Since I have the pumped engine, I am using a 20 oz DuBro tank which is mounted over the wing in the area just behind the bulkhead/wing leading edge interface. I knew after the first test flight that the retracts that came with the plane really sucked so I converted it over to a set of pneumatic Robart 605HDs.
A word of warning!!! On the second flight, we kept hearing a low pitched buzzing sound. At first I thought it was wind noise created by something draggy on the airframe. This entire flight was only flown at a guesstimated speed of about 80MPH. On one of the passes, I noticed that the left horizontal stab tip was a blur with vibration/flutter. I landed immediately and the next day replaced the stock horizontal stab and elevators with a solid one from 3/8" balsa stock. Problem solved. For those of you who have yet to assemble your plane, I strongly recommend making your own solid stock horizontal stab. The matching Ultracote color is "dark yellow"(they have three shades of yellow).

Changing to Robart Air retracts???
Ok, what is the trick to get these plastice wheel wells out of the wing and not destroy them???
Also, does any of you guys have a photo of installation of a pneumatic system in this model???
Photos are greatly appreciated.
I have not flown my model yet. I have to install the engine, cowl, throttle cable, RX and battery and it will be ready!
Thanks for your tips,
C&B

That's why your radio comes with a variable throttle stick...LOL

Control throws????
Say guys, what did you set your control throws at for your maiden flights??? I want to be sure this baby is not too touchy on the first go around.
All I have left to do is fit the cowl, install my power switch and check the CG!! Then, it's off to the field. I installed a DuBro filler valve assembly to make fill-ups quick.
Thanks for your help.

FLIGHT REPORT
Okay, I did the deed today!
I am pleased to report all went well and came home without damage.
Only complaint is the nosing over problem on landings. Anyone else having this happen??
I believe it may be that the retracts are getting a little toed in while rolling and acting as a brake of sorts.
I guess it's the nature of the mechanical retract.
Any suggestions on a fix besides changing them???
Thanks,
C&B

Second that, it does have a tendancy to nose over on the landing, I find a three point landing and full up elevator on the rollout pretty well cures it. Same thing on the takeoff depending on the cut of the grass, needs a slightly tail low attitude or risk going over if it hits any kind of rut. Using 3/16 Robart air.

The biggest problem on model mustangs is the placement of the gear. If you look at a real Mustang the upper gear leg is almost on the leading edge. It also has a slight forward rake. This puts the wheel well forwad of the leasing edge. Also if you put the CG as far aft as posible and are still able to maintain control it will help the noseover problem. Don
