I have a question on the center section of the wing.  As it came tougher, I noticed the forward dowels when they go through the aft and forward dowel supports, they do not line up with the dowel location on the plans.  Will this be an issue further down the road?  I was meticulous putting all these pieces together.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had a issue with the wing pins they were a little off I just opened up the holes slightly to accept the pins in the fuse no big deal, there are a few small areas on the plans that don't completely jive with the parts in the boxjust make sure the pins align with the fuse and there isn't any slop or looseness in the wing the holes don't need to be perfectly round as long as the pins slide in tightly, the leading edge is centered in the fuse, and the pins hold the leading edge in place again with no slop in the wing

My recommendation based on my experience...make sure the dowells are completelly parallel. Use the jig provided or make your own jig for the pins separation. Make sure the pins are equidistant from the center of the wing. Once the wing is completed, you will have to adjust the holes in the fuselage to abtain the right wing angle of incidence and centered position from each tip of the wing to the stabilizer. At that time, you will also have to adjust the wing saddle in the fuse.

My 2 cents.

By the way, after one year of not toching my build, I started cleaning up the garage and building board. I am determined to finish my SF before summer is over.

Thanks guy for all the inputs and advise.  I am starting to look at the flap servo installation prior to skinning the center section.  Are there any good pictures out there of what to look for?  The instructions are somewhat limited.  Why would you not use 2 servos for flaps?  Is it just the weight issue?  Any help would be nice

the single servo works great for the flaps there really quite small and there is no need to add more weight unless you wanted to use a mini servo.

this is what I did, I made a hatch cover that extended under the wing cooler so in case I needed access to flap the bell crank

the screw holes in the cooler pass through a solid block of balsa so the screws don't get loose in the cooler or wing there #4 screws and the ones that are exposed are small #2 screws so they don't stick out

That's a well thought built by providing access to the flap. I left mine completely closed per Top Flite building manual. However, I used fiber glass links with titanium ends to save on the weight.

I will be using a high-torque mini servo to save weight.

Cheers,
no its a light ply piece that bridges between the wing ribs its plenty sturdy for the bell cranks, I used the exact same method on my FW190A8 build it works like a charm, the only difference was I built ply hatches over the cranks in case I needed to adjust something but the reality is once there set up you shouldn't have to touch them,my spit in the back ground.

I am trying to decide on a motor for this spit fire and need some help as to which one to go with. I can go either gas or glow. I do think I would like a 4 stroke but that can be changed as well. It has been some time since I have even worked on the spit, but I am getting ready to get back into the build. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Mine is sitting on the back bunner at the moment but i have an O.S. 1.08 ready to go in mine. Way more than enough power but it fits and it is what i have. If you have something to fly it that may be a consideration, if not there are a lot of different engines to fly this Spitfire. Remember, power is your friend....

I built the TopFlite Spitty. I had an OS 60 with a warbird style muffler. I sold it before I ever flew it. If yours is in this same weight (7-8lbs) a 60 2ST would do the job. However, that being said, I have used the OS 1.08 in a similar weight plane and it was far superior in power. Does burn fuel, however….but as the man said…power is your friend. Just remember to get some throttle on when going into your final approach….afterall, it is a warbird.

I don't know what the final weight will be yet. I haven't started any fiberglassing yet. I would guess a little better than 10 pounds. I was thinking the Golden Knight 91S. Any thoughts?

The Sato GK is a great engine. I have had several. My first thought is a 91 4ST going to give you enough power? I guess I would error on a bit larger….say a 120. I am sure others could chime in on this as well.

mine was built with a OS91 4st you could fit a 120 in there but the head will be sticking out quite a bit, one advantage would be to not need as much weight up front to balance,

I have considered putting a 120 in mine since I have a extra engine laying around I just havent had the time or desire to fiddle with it,another thing is fuel tank space I would need to open up the front area for a larger fuel tank the one I have in the plane is pretty small and would not give much flight time.

mine comes in at about 10lbs I have wanted to dump the wire push rods as well for a lighter version there are several things I would do differently if I were to build another one of these

I have not set the C of G on mine yet but at the moment it comes in a fraction under 9lbs. After seeing that most of you are going for a 120 engine I am hoping my Saito 80 will be ok.

I have looked at several other build threads and elected to add some additional detail to the wing and landing gear area. This is what it looks like. I hope it doesn't mess up the weight too much

Another thought about a larger engine….Warbirds can often come in tail heavy…my experience. So, a bit more weight and power may be a good thing.
