Default RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version

I'm back, I have read so many threads on engines that my vision has blurred. Every engine has someone that loves them and someone who hates them. I have narrowed down my engine choices to a Saito 100, Evolution 100, OS 91 and Super Tiger 90. Which of these, after break in, would be the most reliable and easy to keep tuned. I do not have to go Mach 1. There are only 5 of us that fly in this small town. If the plane does go faster than I want isn't that what the left stick is for? I have already received one vote for the OS from Mustangace. The main reason I didn't want a four stroke is cost, but you only live once, so what the hell. The YS is definitely out due to cost and availability. Any and all suggestions will be considered. I do not have a clue. My biggest airplane before only needed a .61 engine. This is new airspace for me. Thanks for anyones help.

Rare Bear, I have gotten up to 9600 with a 14/12 APC on my 110. Though I have been eyeballing the APC 120 Warbird prop: a 13/13N

I have owned a Satio 100 for 2 years. After the initial breakin I have nevedr hads to tune the engin. All I do is dtart the enging and take off. By the way I have the satio 100 in the World P-51. It's a screamer.

If you want a really fast mustang then put a 140fz YS motor in it, its an awsome combination, i am currently flying with a 14x14 prop recommended for breakin, it really moves, i guess about 160mph if not more, we have a radar at our field, i will have to set it up and see what she will do. just make sure all linkages are nice and tight, gap seal all hinge lines. this plane flies like its on rails, really a great plane.

I doubt you're getting 160mph...........maybe 130. Prove me wrong, please. Straight and level, no diving.

Thanks for all of the input on engines. I have decided to take the plunge and get the Saito 100. Kenbill, what size prop and brand are you using now? Is it also good for break-in?

are there any issues with running (mostly in terms of reliable idle) a saito100 inverted? i know that dave runs a saito120 and he also has a fuel pump to regulate fuel and keep it from loading up the engine.

hey speedaholic...

i was going to buy the rare bear ARF and power it with a YS140 and prop it accordingly. then when the kit came out and it became clear that the ARF is a piece of sh*t design, i opted out and got the petie 2'cd. sounds like you have a real screamer. when you get a radar on it, post it here

Hi ALL
Not to disrupt all the engine jazz, 'cause it's great...
It all started out that I just didn't like the instrument panel graphic..,but I needed a glow system and I do like bells and whistles as well as good flight/engine specs. It's a pseudo instrument panel. Although these are P-51 gauges, redrawn from the flight instruction manual, it's not made to look like a P-51 i-p. It does however function. 8 buttons (418MHZ local remote option) and 17 LEDS provide for:
1.) back lighting the gauges,
2.) landing lights enable
3.) position lights (Port,Starboard,Tail)
4.) collision lights (Port,Starboard,Tail)
5.) tail light blinks when gas float switch is shorted.
6.) port wing blinks when Rx Battery is low (adjustable trip point)
7.) starboard wing blinks when Glow Battery is low (adjustable trip point)
8.) starboard wing also blink when Glow Drive is ON to indicate good glow plug. (heavy current draw)
9.) glow plug trip point (throttle position) is set with up down buttons and stored in flash memory.
10.) map light luminates cockpit and pilot.
11.) lost Tx/Rx will beep and flash light for easier retrival if Main Tx or Navigation Rx signal is lost.
12.) lost Tx/Rx will also beep and light when command is received from remote
13.) aux control for bomb release or camera etc.
I know probably 99.9% of R/C flying is done during the day, but I think flying at dawn and dusk with this setup will give an extra sensation. Thanks for any and all feedback. If the pictures don't show below, there are several others at my gallery. Thanks for all the help in getting my Petie built. ,ec

Default RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version

just giving an update on a modification that i did a few days ago:

last week, i took my mustang to the field and had a flight. a-ok.

i taxied back to the pits and wanted to check the engine rpm's with the 14x10 prop...
so there it is on the tune-up fixture (2 posts that hold back the wings) and i begin to rev up and tach the engine. unfortunately, in the process of pushing the throttle stick forward, my lil' pinkie knocked the gear switch and down she went. no biggie - it only shaved off 1 inch of prop on both ends.... but i did notice the retract servo binding up in the up position.

the pushrod wire that goes into the servo arm screw down whatcha-ma-call-it pulled out a bit even with the set screw pretty tight - so i had to loosen up the set screws and re-adjust.

well, i always sort of thought that the pushrod wire setup was kind of flimsy because it bends so easily... so i ended up making a custom servo arm (out of a standard hanger 9 metal servo arm for JR servos and some 3/16 stock aluminum) at the machine shop at work. this custom servo arm now connects up to some 4-40 ball joints (rocket city) and 4-40 push rods. a 4-40 dubro locking clevis is at the other end which connects to the stock retract control horn.

nice-n-strong now.

i also set up my flap switches as follows:

on the futaba 9c, i ended up moving the flap switch to the left side so my right hand is free to stay on the right stick at all times. because i use 2 fingers (never liked using my thumb only) on the stick, i got messed up when using another finger on my right hand to move the 3 position switch and have enough finesse on the stick at the same time.

anyway, i moved the flap switch to the left side. i also did a custom mix that when the gear are lowered, a 10 degree flap drop is automatically mixed in. hitting the flap switch takes it to roughly 35 degrees. so when i touch down, i hit the flap switch and they go back to 10 degrees.

the plane sticks like glue with no tendency to bounce. the only drawback to this setup is on takeoff because with the gear down, i have 10 degrees of flap mixed in. no big deal but it does require more elevator feed on takeoff so the nose doesn't point down.

sweet plane - it flies so smooth.

i should be moving up to a 13x12N or 13x13N soon. i am getting 9500 rpm's with the 14x10 on the ys110 and the plane is fast. the computer program i have at work shows that 9500 rpm's on a 14x10 consume ~2.35h.p. so this engine should be able to turn a 13x13N, according to the program, at 9600 rpm.

Rare Bear in cold weather at about 800MSL I have gotten 9600 with a 14/12 APC. With it being hot and humid now, I am lucky to get 9000. In the fall I think I will switch to the 13/13N. I might even get that 13/12 for now.

MustangAce,

i think i can get more out of my 110 but because it has approx 5 full tanks of gas (about 2/3 gallon) through it now, i am still running it on the rich side.

an aside, someone at the field today said i should have put a 140 in it. maybe on the next one [sm=lol.gif]

i wonder if viper got his landing gear yet [X(]

===============================

sunday report...

got to fly formation (well, if you can call it that cuz my plane was hardly in formation) with tim and dave this morning. i definately have a learning curve ahead of me as i need to master the short-radius-turns and low altitude flying. will hopefully post some pictures herein.
the taxi-back, flaps dropped, was way cool looking and i hope the picture that fred took turns out .

Rare Bear
I am getting a lot of vibration out of satio 100. Did you use the anti vibration mount? I did and still get vibration. I am going to use the solid mount to see if anything changes. Did you use the stock screws to secure the cowling to the fuselage or did you use something else. Any reason the three planes pictured didn't use the retracts?

I too had vibration I removed the rubbers and drilled out the mount to mount it direct. I used the aluminum plates to space it correctly and just used the original mount after I drilled it. It had less vibration after than before. A another pilot at our field who has a Velox from WM had the same mount he also did the same thing. It seems the rubber is too weak to me.

??????????
All three are using retracts. They're down because the planes are on the ground.

Do you mean the fiberglass fairings that come with the kit? If so, then the answer is because they don't fit that well.

kenbill,

see post 278 and post 286 for a picture of my mount.

i used a gator RC soft-n-safe mount

however, taildragger dave and another guy don't have any vibe mounts and they don't have much vibration.

check your prop and spinner balance.

all three of us used the stock retracts. i ended up junking the pushrods however and going with overkill 4-40 rods and ball joints.

In reply to Kenbill you will notice that the mount has some little plates that are between the rubbers and the mount. To keep the spacing the same you need to put those back. Just look at the mount and you will see what I mean. It is the plates that come with the mount.

i could implement photoshop and give all three of them water floats. maybe that would be less confusing?

say dave, i saw daryl out at the field today. i asked him what he does to keep cowling screw drill holes from getting chewed up by the screw. he said that he uses fuel line. cut about 1/8 inch of fuel line and stick it in the cowl hole. then screw it on down. i'm gonna try that before i resort to tape.
