Depends on if you are talking about actual production airplanes that made it into service or if you include one-off prototypes. Even then there will still probably be much debate. However, I'm pretty sure the Sea Fury was not the fastest production piston engine airplane.
Rad, if he's thinking of 18 cylinder radials AND the DH Hornet then he is thinking of a version of the Hornet that I've never seen! Might be really cool though, twin Bristols with five blade props!

I would like to throw the F8F bearcat into the speed ring. I believe this was the fastest piston powered fighter of all time. This is just my 2 pennies worth. I saw a chart once that had the Dornier in it and the fast cat was still slightly faster.

The DO335 wasn't exactly a "one off" prototype. I am reasonably sure there were at least six of them that were built and flown. I have a book on the DO-335 and also a vhs video tape on the Do335 so if it is really important to know the exact number, I have a way of verifying that.

The bearcat had a speed of 421 and the seafury 435, if you want to talk fast prop look at the tu114 at least 545 and some say 574. Then again, none from wwII but the tempest at 426 mph was.

In an emergency dive from 43000ft (13100m), F/L E. Powles reaches Mach 0.96 with a PR.XIX. This is the highest speed ever recorded for a piston-engined aircraft. Mach 0.92 has been achieved by Spitfires in controlled dive experiments.
With the speed of sound at 10,000 feet being about 734mph that gives the Spit a speed of approx 705mph

The fastest propeller driven airplane is the Tu-114 turboprop that has held the record since 1960 with a speed of 877.21 kmh or 545 mph.
The fastest piston engined airplane was the Rare Bear (for those that don't know, a very highly modifed Bearcat), that set a speed of 850.24 kph or 528.3 mph over a straight 3km course in 1989.

An interesting aside is that the Tu 114 set the record with a 25,000 kg payload onboard, which means it automatically holds all the records over a closed circuit of 5000 km for no payload all the way up to 25,000kg.
It also holds all the speed records for a 10,000 km closed circuit for payloads from 0 to 10,000kg, which it set two years later (1962) at a speed of 737.35 km/h.

You are all wrong, the fastest warbird in history is the Hawker Sea Fury ZK-SFR, today it always wins the Great Air Race in Australia and over Europe. And yes the Sea fury was built after the war so it is mainly excluded from aerodrome attacks[&o]

Here are some stats on the DO 335. Source book --- Monogram Monarch written by Smith, Creek, and Hitchcock:
DO 335 V9 prototype flown by Heinrich Beauvais at Rechlin attained a speed of 472mph (it was supposedly capable or 477 at 21,000ft).
52 Dornier 335 were completed before the end of the war
15 prototypes
10 preproduction
27 production examples
Just thought I'd put my 2cents worth in.
Later,
Mike

Just FYI, the modified P-51 "Dago Red" is reportedly preparing for an attempt at the 3KM speed record for piston powered airplanes which is now held by "Rare Bear".

RE: The Hawker Seafury was the fastest Prop driven plane
I always thought the 335 was the fastest in WWII, but thats just from the resaearch i did when i built mine,,, Also if they had a little more time before they were taking over, It would have for sure exceded that,,, It was still being fine tuned and other engines were going to be tested,,,, But i am sure there are plenty planes out there that we dont know much about they were way up in the speed range,,,,,

RE: The Hawker Seafury was the fastest Prop driven plane
I think one of the world's fastest piston engined airplanes was the Messerschmitt Me 209 V1 which set the absolute world speed record of 469.22 mph on April 26, 1939. The aircraft was flown by Flugkapitan Fritz Wendel. The power plant was a specially designed Daimler-Benz DB 601 ARJ twelve cylinder inverted liquid cooled engine of 1,800 hp which could be boosted to 2,300 hp for short bursts. Aircraft was completed in June 1938 and first flew August 1, 1938, which means that the plane flew before WWII...
I can not believe that a t-bolt does more than 500mph+, but does anyone have more infos about this rocket-bolt?

1938, absolute speed record of 469.22 miles per hour established by German Messerschmitt 209VI landplane
1969, absolute speed record of 483.04 miles per hour established by highly modified American Grumman F8F landplane
The world speed records cited above are officially recognized by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale and were established under sea-level flight conditions.
The Tbolt J did 507 at 34,300
