RE: FiberClassics P-51 now Comp-ARF P-51
I'm starting the build on one of these mustangs.
Here is the extension shaft I have made. The material is 7075 ali which is as hard as steel.
The pictures show the method.

Got the central extension shaft made. Tried dialing it up but it is way off. It is not going on this motor so am not worried yet but I may need to make a completely new central shaft unit. Also got me thinking that maybe the stock shafts have some runout.

Got some long capscrews for the extension shaft and lengthened the threads, a bit of a mission as the screws are 12.9's the toughest grade.
Made a dummy spinner back plate with clearance spacer as an aid to mounting the motor.

Here are a few more shots of the engine installation. Thats as tight as I could get the header, the motor will need to be angled to one side slightly to give the header clearance.

Hi Jack the shaft extension is 51mm long as is the central spigot that carries the prop. Unfortunately the central spigot extension is around .5mm out of true so I will need to revisit that and get it right. Incidentally I have 3 DA 85's here and I measured the stock central spigots nad they are between .17mm and .2mm out, I would have thought less than .1mm would be acceptable.

Alan do you mean shaft extension? I think any extension will void your warantee. The limiting factor is side loads on the bearings due to gyroscopic precession, not sure what that limit is depends on how hard you manouvre the model at high revs.

Here are some of the parts for the rubber mount. I cut rubber with a sharpened tube and use glycerine as a lube.

Here are some more pictures of progress. On the left you can see how the rubber isolator system works. The stiffness can be adjusted with the length of the central ali spigot thingy. The false firewall will get reinforced with carbon cloth and mounted to firewall proper with ali standoffs around 55mm long.

Alan have just been looking at the DA 85 manual again. They do not recommend usinng stand offs and will not cover the motor if they are used. I think this is because of the possibility of missalignment with the mounting lugs which will then break off. Conersider a false firewall using your extensions or ply box. I have eliminated the stress by using the rubber mounting system, which will still be hard enough not to flop around.

Great job the the engine prop drive extension.
Having step many years fiddling around with soft mounts in all shapes and sizes... I'm a little disappointed with your proposed solution.
That's not the best way to go in my opinion.
