Inside of the wind shield is done. Painted black, then removed the tape. Added some rivets to the inside. I mixed up some white glue and "steel" paint so when the rivets dry they will be a steel colour.

Painting went faster than I thought. I like to use modelmasters enamels as they go on well and dry quick.
Next will be the button head screws, and that should finish it off nicely.

Just moving right along here. Button head screws are in, placed the front windscreen on to see how it looks through the glass.

ORIGINAL: Canuck1
Did some more work in the instrument hood. Added some fuel tube, plastic pieces, and pre drilled the holes for the small button head screws. Now I need to prime the whole thing, then paint it black. After it is painted I will add the button head screws that will represent the padding hold down screws.

Thanks Erwin
Started messing with the tail wheel mounting. Made the platform, have installed the retract mech and the servo that will drive both the tail wheel and rudder. Still more tinkering to get it done. I want to make sure all components are completely modular in case I need to remove stuff down the road.
Still need to figure out how far it needs to protrude out the bottom of the fuselage.

Lots of misc items to complete. I have been doing some small things however they are all part of the big picture.
The tail wheel plywood piece is complete, and I glassed it for some extra strength. I will clean that up tomorrow if I have time.
I also glued in two more tabs for the cowl mount.

Hi from South Africa
Just to let you know that this thread has cost me dearly! I am now very poorer and have a Comp Arf Mustang in the workshop
I will now start the process of sourcing the under carriage, cockpit, and other items. Any guidance here would be appreciated. By the way, does the opportunity to buy second retracts/parts for this kit exist. I know not always good, but our currency really hurts us here, especially in this hobby.
Can't wait to start, and will also post pics as I progress.
Cheers
Gareth

Hi Gareth,
I'm flying it with sierra giant retracts with no problem. Very strong and reliable.
I made the cockpit myself.

RE: FiberClassics P-51 now Comp-ARF P-51
Hi and thanks.
I will look it up tonight. I have managed to source a set of legs only from one of our local model shops for R7200 (1028 dollars). This does not include any tanks. pipes, and etc. I am sure I could possibly import them slightly cheaper.
Anyway part of the project!
Update is that I received the kit last night (picked it up on the way to our club meeting) and have started some work on it this eveing. I am in the process of fitting the elevator servos.
At this stage I am also uncertain of a paint scheme, and would really appreciate if someone could give me a link to some decent pictures. I am thinking of doing mine an operational war 2 aircraft??
Cheers

Welcome Gareth, post away on here, the more the better.
I am plugging along, with the small things that I may not be able to reach when she is together. At the rear of the fuse there are holes, I believe for lifting the tail, so I have inserted aluminim tube to simulate this. I also did the flare hole on the portside of the fuselage. Have also installed a few more cowling tabs.
Great links SnakeBT6.
I will be doing a Canadian Mustang Mk IV, love the scheme and the yellow will make it stand out in the air.

Hi
Thanks very much to all for the welcome and assistance.
Well weather terrible here so no flying today, but got to spend some time on the Mustang, and am busy with the tailwheel doors. Havn't surced the tailwheel unit just yet, but want to try and get as much done as when time permits. My intention is to fly this aircraft in the South African Nationals in July next year. Want to try and follow my two brothers who have competed in International competitions. The katest was my brother Glen Roberts at the wworld jet masters with his scratch built Vampire. Can be serched on this site somewhere, (Glen Roberts Vampire). He placed second overall as a matter of interest.
I am on the smaller scale, and sill prefer prop drven fighters.
As soo as I gigure it out, and make enough progress I will post some pics.
This forum is a great motivator to keep you progressing, and on the right track, thank you!
Cheers

RE: FiberClassics P-51 now Comp-ARF P-51
And now the questions start, and I appologisefor the spelling in previous post, I think I was just too excited/in a hurry to post it!
1. Has anyone changed the elevator servos to a single servo such as the JR 8911? Would/could look better in the fuse rather than sticking out of the stab halves.
2. I am considering making the trim tabs on the elevators working - any thoughts/concerns?
3. I looking for some advice on moulding a canopy frame around the main canopy area. I am not keen on just painting the current setup.
Thanks, and cheers
Gareth

I made my own frame, page 55 I think. Was not to difficult, just takes a bit of time. I will have to adjust the front windscreen slightly to fit the angle of the canopy when it is closed. Yes do post pics, every picture is worth a thousand words.
I worked on the gap between the wings when inserted into the bottom of the fuselage. I put mold release on one side, mixed up some Bondo filler, slid the wings together, bolted her tight. After it set up, around 1 minute I used a razor blade and trimmed it down level. the bondo sets up so quick, that I had the starboard wing secured and then slide the port wing into place. Had to be quick, took 2 attempts to get it............. before it hardend.
Anyways, will slide it back together and give it a sand, apply primmer and sand some more to get a clean finish.

Very cool Canuck! I am impressed with your idea on sealing up that gap. Keep up the good work and keep the pics coming. I have not yet started mine yet I figure it will be a very long term project but I am excited with the quality of the kit. I do have a dilema on deciding what motor to put in it. I live at 4600 ft so I tend to have to go bigger on the motor to get any performance out of them.

Can't wait to see your finished product Canuck.
By the way, I ahve noticed that the fairing/fillet for the stab and elevator is very different on either side. It appears to be missing on the left hand side of the aircraft. My kit was QC dated 22/07/2010, so it is a new one. Is this the same on your aircrafts, and if so did, and how was it corrected?
Also, has anyone tried the single elevator servo, and is it viable?
Many thanks
Gareth

Hi Gareth
I've almost completed my P51 .... the earlier C-Arf version. Its taken a while! I've fitted the 3W -110 inline twin ... customised the exhaust to semi-scale full working 12 cylinders Lol.... and really battled to fit the Robart retracts esp setting the main doors. Good luck with your project! Hope you have a really understanding partner ...

Hi Peter
Nearly two Mustangs in the same area! would have been nice.
What colour/full size are you replicating, and when do you think yours will fly? Also if you don't mind me asking, where did you source the retracts, and cockpit kit from, and really if you don't mind, how much did they cost?
I still have to get the gear, and cockpit kit for mine, and wheels for that matter.
Cheers

Hi Gareth
The retracts are Robart ...Tower Hobbies ... costs about R6k, and I'm not impressed at all!
I'm using the Jetronics controller for the gear and door sequencing ... another R5k from Aerial Concepts.. (Greg Casson)
and the cockpit from inZpan ...http://www.inzpan.com/ ... the best by far, costs around R3k
... Which engines are you considering??
Cheers

Hi Peter
I intend using a 3W 85 xi, I am sure it will be ok at the coast. As far as the other bits and pieces are concerned, jeez rather pricey!!
I bought my kit from aerial, and the retracts they hav ein stock are 7k excluding any fittings, tanks or valves! But they are the only ones that stock such "animals".
The cockpit I am sure I could try and source slightly cheaper, not sure though. But it is definately needed in an aircraft like this.
When do you think yours will fly, see it at OUdshoorn/Gariep next year?
Cheers

I still have not decided on my power plant as of yet. Am leaning towards the DA 85, with a pitts muffler. Not to sure if it will fit, but that is my choice, and still need to purchase the engine.
Still slowly thinking things through as I progress with the Mustang. The windscreen needs to be attached next before I can proceed with the canopy sliding mechanism.
Hope to post more soon.

Thanks for the comments Andrew. I am slowely plugging along. The weather here has been fantastic, so between yard clean up, the Mustang, and flying my Corsair on Sundays, oh and the family (he he) its busy at the moment.
I plan on installing the windscreen this evening with Hysol. I have cleaned the winshield several times with "Meguiars" plastic cleaner and polish. This stuff works well and am happy with the cleaning. There is a nice smooth finish to the clear plastic after it is polished. I plan on doing some more polishing before I install the screen.
Will post more after the install.

Windshield is finally installed after lots of procrastinating.
Went faster than I thought. I will leave it like this, all braced and secured for at least a minimum of 24 Hours.
