FiberClassics P-51 now Comp-ARF P-51

Hi guys, here are a few shots of my P51 ............. The cockpit shots were taken a few weeks ago before finish painting ........... This was the first time I had seen her fully assembled, a good exercise, that threw up a couple of issues before she gets to fly.
I would like to hear from somebody, who has actually flown one of these models, what control throws they use ? ? ?

you have done a nice painting and very clever-discreet weathering!!!!!

Paul 0088, thank you for the response ................ and the pictures............ Your P51 looks ace !
If you look at post #2083, you will see I was asking about control throws .............. would you be so kind to tell us what control throws you have, when flying yours ?
Thanks in advance
Andrew

Thanks Paul, much appreciated .......................... the manual recommends 3/4" up 1/2" down for the elevator ........... this seems very little, is it enough ? ? same with ailerons 1/2" up and down ? ?

Anyone care to share some of the dimensions of their cockpit tubs? Particularly the armor plate behind the pilot and the length from the cockpit to the back of the seat? I have the iflytaillies 1/5th kit. I blew up the template they give you in photoshop to make it the right scale, still seems too small.
thanks
thanks

DH71Tiger,
Good work. I didn't measure throws, but I echo another post. On high rates all the throw you can get with exponential. 15deg flap on takeoff, slave about 2deg down elevator. 47deg flaps (same as real one) with starting 3 to 4 deg down elevator. Note of caution, there is lots of wires/servo extensions inside that bird, pay close attention to all connections. I lost my first Comp Arf to extension connectors that pushed back into thin plastic connectors. Had two battery packs one for receiver which only had throttle and choke attached. The other to all flying surfaces. The main bat lost connection and all I had was throttle and choke. Didn't fly well, ready to play taps. Be sure to lateral balance. Good luck.

Thanks for all the info Charlie, I use Ashlocks for all my servo connections, can you guys get them in the U.S. ............ A Power Box sensor switch with 2 x Li-po batteries with dual connections to the Rx. 1 x Li-po battery through a Powerbox Spark Switch for the ignition.
I will thoroughly check all systems before attempting to fly my 'stang. Still a few jobs to do, next week looks like a probable for first trip to the field for engine running, range checking and ground handling trials.

Which Engine did you use?
I put this plane together 2 years ago with a DA 85 and had a friend mill an extension. Balanced the spinner and prop and still had enough vibration to shake the throttle servo loose. Now I am fixing the wings(after an off-field dead stick due to throttle servo vibrating loose) after letting it sit for a year.
Hoping some of you that are subscribed from days ago can tell me....
What is the ideal engine for this plane that doesn't require an extension?

Hi TimDavie, the DA-85 runs rough even without an extension. That's a fact of life. I have that engine on a TBM Zero and even with precision balancing on the prop and spinner, it puts out lots of vibration. For my CARF P-51, I have ordered an MVVS 80cc which was the Evolution 80 until just recently. Chief Aircraft is supposedly making an order on MVVS engines now, so you might get your order in on one. They may order several extra anyway to have them in stock. You'd have to call Chief and ask for Steve Coleman to find out.

Thanks for the reply and yes the DA 85 shakes A LOT! Let me ask you about going to the MVVS. What made you go with that choice? Extra bearings? Does it fit in the cowl better than any others and are you going to need an extension with this engine also? I am a little hesitant to go down in HP since the plane on the 85 wasn't anemic, but vertical was definitely challenged with this plane. Speed bled off fast in the 45 upline. Very scale you can say. I like to have a little power in reserve however.

Tim,
I did some searching on another engine for the P-51 and ran across some You Tube videos. I was fairly impressed with the results. There are a couple of videos showing the Evo 80 pulling a 99 inch Flying Legends 'Stang as well as a CARF P-51. You can do some searches on You Tube for Evolution 80cc to see what else it out there on video. But, the P-51 on the Evo 80 really looks good. The pilot is extremely smooth and fluid, which makes the flight even more enjoyable. Same pilot doing the flying. Engine never misses a beat. I have to say, the planes fly with authority.
