Where can I get scale wheels for my TF GS P47
Gday folks, this is in a similar vein to the earlier thread on the Corsair wheels and I have obtained a list of suppliers from there, however I thought I would add this post as it is releting to purely the P47.
As I have the TF Giant Scale P47 I was wondering what the correct size of wheel (outside diameter) should be? The kit says 5" but me thinks it would be a bit bigger then that, prob about 5 1/2".
as most would know the retract location on the Tf version is NOT nearly scale and hence there is limited depth in the leading edge wheel well area the wheel is forced to retract into. Hence I intend to do a few mods and relocate the retract to the scale location including the correct angles as far as possible. A friend of mine has an old article he got from somewhere that explains how to do it.
What I would like to know is:
1. Correct scale size
2. Correct size wheel to order. Dennis from Glennis (hehe) said in the other thread that the listed wheel sizes were in fact the inner measurement of the tire hence what bloody size I in fact need is anybody's guess.
I'm leaning towards either Glennis or Robart at this stage
By the way if anyone can supply the above for my TF GS Corsair that would be helpful too!
ta in advance
cheers
Peter

RE: Where can I get scale wheels for my TF GS P47
Peter, I took a 3 view that I found in the Aero Detail 14 book on the P-47 and measured the wheel size. There was a dimension line on the view, so I used it to find the full scale factor. Then I took the wheel size and multiplied it by the scale factor. The full scale wheel comes out to approximately 33.5 inches.
Then I took the wingspan measurement data for the P-47 E, which is 40' 9 1/4" and divided this by the wingspan of the TF GS P-47 (85"). The true scale of the TF P-47 is 1/5.757, given thej 40' wingspan of the E model. I believe that the N model has a 42' wingspan.
Anyway, after doing all of the math, it appears that the scale wheel size should be about 5.8". This is the outside of the tire.
Keep in mind that this is all approximate, since I was measuring from views in a magazine on paper. But it confirms your assessment that the wheel should be greater than 5"
By the way, would you email (or tell me how I can get it) the information from article about how to modify the retracts to me. I would be interested it modifying mine, so that I could at least get a 5" wheel attached.
Thanks,
Craig

Peter,
I ordered the P-47 Aero Detail book from Great Models Webstore. I think they still have the book in stock. I got mine in May. Go to greatmodels.com and go to the bookstore. Select WWII USAAF. Then go to items 21-40 of 177. The book is under Model Graphix Books, near the bottom of the screen. It's really a detailed book and you'll enjoy it.

Great, Peter!!!
You'll find it to be a pretty complete book. I'm sure you'll consider it a worthwhile purchase. Let us know when you receive it.

Caution on your wheel size. I started with a 5" and it wouldn't fit inside the wing when I made the gear doors. I am now down to a 4.5" and they fit well. I am using DuBro because scale tread isn't as important to me as the gear doors working.

yup know all about that.
That is why I will be redesigning the wing structure to allow placement of the gear in the scale location.
cheers

Peter,
Have you gotten the info yet on how to redesign the landing gear installation to accept the 5" wheels?
How is the building of your kit going? I'm still working on the fuselage. I'm almost finished sheeting the bottom of the fuse and have to attach the fuse aft block. I've decided to hollow it out some to reduce the weight that far back.

Craig,
sorry that I have not got back to you sooner, too many trips away. Was in NY a few weeks back now off to London on the weekend - arrrggghhhh.
anyway in answer no have not been able to get that article as yet. The friend who has it recently underwent open heart surgery so has been a bit under the weather. Actually I was over there yesterday and it completely slipped my mind!!
ok just rang him and what he said is that it is not an artcle on repositioning the gear but on working out geometry for gear doors and rams etc. Having said that we will be doing some work together to make the retract location scale which will require redesign of part of the wing including the use of sub spars.
As I build the bird I will be starting a thread and adding in pics etc.
Sorry to mess you about
cheers

Thanks, Peter.
I'll be looking forward to seeing the pictures as you proceed on the wing.
Don't you just hate it when you have to travel too much. It can sure get tiresome.

Peter, did you ever get the info you wanted on the wheels? You might take a look at Aerotech
http://www.aerotechmodels.com/p47kit.htm
I believe they're 5.5" since their model has an 82" wingspan.

Criag,
mate yeah travel can be a right pain in the rear end - literally as 24 hrs jammed into a seat in cattle class is not my idea of fun! Anyway goes with the position.
Ok I've now got the mag showing how to do the gear doors on the P47, really easy by the look too and a great result.
It is in RC Scale International May/June 2000 if you can get hold of one. I really do not think that scanning would work very well but I could photocopy it for you and either fax or post. PM me or email me with your details and we can go from there.
cheers

Peter,
Thanks for the response. I'll try to get a copy of the May/June 2000 issue from Traplet. If they don't have it then it would be great if you could send a copy of the article via mail. If a copy of the mag is available, then I'd hate for you to spend the time and money to copy and mail the article to me. I'll let you know.
Thanks again,
Craig
