Great looking plane Todd.
Too bad a guy can't fly em just like that. Something about a built up wood airframe that just makes my juices flow. Of course a finished plane does that too.

thanks Randy, its been fun building. I started this in June 2002, but pu it aside when I got the Taylor Spitfire. Now I'm back, it took awhile to get back into this, but now that I have been working on it for a week, it's hard to stop working on, being that sleep and works gets in the way

Hey Todd:
Looks good. I know you cannot wait to finish that one. Still has me thinking about getting one. It looks like it is just a tad bit smaller than the Yellow P-47. Have you gotten the retracts yet?

thanks Kirk, and bullet.
Kirk I went and ordered Spring Air mains for it, and Robart
struts. Dont tell Lenny
I was going to have him work on making a set for this, I still will send him plans, but should have sent them to him 9 months ago, to be ready now. So I took the easy way out for now
Fuse is pretty much all done now, working on final sanding and cleaning up fillets. Have to build a hatch door for fuel, air, and switches.
Wing top is sheethed waiting on gear. Hope to have German colors on her by summer

Todd, your Jug is looking great. Drop me an email at [email protected] and I'll reply with some additional pics of the intercooler doors which should help answer your questions. (per your PM) Keep at it!

Chad,
just dropped you an email. Interstingly the box's you sent me
for the rear cooler door area, fit exactly as I had it marked on the plane! I had scaled it back from the Taylor plans, and made an adjustment so it fit between the formers back there, and marked it out. I built your box, and it overlayed right on top of my lines Good job!

Great job Todd, your fuse is further along than mt BT Spitfire fuse is.
I bought the kit from B Holman a couple of years ago and it has
a built up fuse. I don't mind though, half the fun in this hobby is building, IMHO.
By the way, has anyone seen the new BT P-40 he has built? I saw one picture in a scale magazine, it looked pretty good. I has a 84" ws. I asked B. Holman if he had the kit yet and he told me that BT was out of the plans business, and was not going to release it. Bummer!

Mark,
I heard the same unfortunate news. I met Tony from Unitracts last summer and he told me that Brian hadn't produced plans for his last couple designs and was no longer putting stuff out. It was a sad day.
At least we can be thankful for the ones he has shared!!

I actually have an almost complete kit for the Spit here.
I ordered the complete wood kit from Bob, even though
I got the glass fuse from Vic, so I have the wood to build the fuse frame, and most of the wing wood as well. Maybe
I better build another

it is a very nice plane, if you can get one of Vic's fuse's that would be nice also. I plan on doing an inventory on my Spit stuff and figure out what I need from Bob to order more wood.
He sends an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet with the wood layout that is numbered so you know what you should have. I can figure out what wood sheets I have used and can order new ones.

Great Thread
Burl, thanks for all the great references and pictures. Looking good. Brian Taylor Plans are great. I wish the newer plans were as specific as Taylor or especially Dave Platt when building some of the newer 90-100 inch monsters.
I have the Taylor P-47. I really wish he had continued with the late Hellcat and other planes since the P-47.
At this point could you comment on a couple questions from the gallery?
1) you are showing flaps, did you look at the Robart Fowler hinge kit or are they just simple flaps?
2) Lenny and you make reference to some intercooler or other details that were vacuum formed? Are these available?
3) retracts, you are/were having some made by ______? I did not recognize by the first name, sorry!
Thanks!

Mike.
lets see, the flaps I am only using simple Robart hinge points for the flaps, no Fowler's on this one.
The retracts I took the easy way out :-) I am using Spring Air #404 mains which are at a 85 degree angle for the P47, and Robart Oleo struts, cant remember those numbers right now.
The cooler doors and stuff is from Chad Veich here on RCU. They are slightly small for this plane, and I realized that when Chad made them, as they where made for a Ziroli 70". But they are going to look great! Thanks again Chad.
Where in CA. are you Mike? If you are interested, I can email you a ton of Pics I have taken during the construction here. I have 3 meg of pics so if you have a fast/good connection I can email a .zip file to you?
