I did the leading edge holes for the .50s in similar manner though the brass tube was simply shapened, worked very well with a clean holes cut. I put it in my battery drill using a jig.

Ok after work today I went to the shop and dug thru some old stuff and found the brass tube cutter I had made a few years back, so I think that's the way the game will be played, and I have some really hard balsa 1/4 square and I think I can trim it down to fit the holes, so will us that for plug's

Now it is on to the wing to see what has to be done !

Hope to do a bit tonight. Will work out what other jobs to be done.

I did get some very nice 2 ounce carbon fibre cloth a mate of mine that I will use to reinforce the landing gear rails. It will flow around complext shapes easily so should do the job nicely.

cheers

I have only used small bit of C/F in cowls and it was easy to use, after I figured out how to get it to wet out, So will be interesting to see how it goes for you.

should be ok, I think the laminating resin to milk consistency so should wet nicely.

I'll post some pics when I do it.

G'day Guys,

good weekend of planes. Lots of work in the shed working on the Vampire and the P47.

Vampire is balanced, had to add some lead in the nose but I might pull that out and fit and second 6v battery pack instead. I have opted not to use the UBEC, I don't trust them and they are a single point of failure.

Also if the LIPO did run out of grunt then you have nothing to power the flight controls. My way all is on seperate circuits.

I did some taxi trails along the driveway, seems pretty good though the speedy did get quite warm so might open up slots under the fuz so some cooling air flow can get over it.

I fitted the retracts into the P47 and cycled the gear viola it works!! I also cycled the inner gear doors. They work very well however one hinge broke loose, not a biggy, easy fix.

Took the Astrohog and small Pica Spitfire out on Sunday and had a good morning of flying, good landings on both models. Spitfire is a bit of a handful, espcially landings but I had those dialled in so good confidence boost.

Pic from Sunday.

cheers
Peter

Glad to hear you had a good W/E of flying, and nice that you are getting things done on the 47.just keep doing a bit every day or so.

Well got all the plastic off still some color spots, and have washed it down with acetone to clean it up but the original balsa-rite is still coming up and leave a sheen all of the structure on the fus is repaired, will wait on the sheeting till I have a good look at the wing, and get that covering off, if the ding repair on the wing goes as well as the fus did I will glass the bird and go with paint so it's going to be a winter project or more. I still have to do the repair on my weeks bipe so been bounsing back and forth

cheers bob t

Bob, sounds like you are on top of that repair mate, well done.

Camel is coming along nicely there Tom.

I should be back in the shed for a bit tonight and over weekend. Keep looking at poor old Cub, will have to do a bit on that over the weekend.

Weekend report take 2 after RCU locked up.

Saturday spent all day in the shed fiddling mainly with the P47, working out what needs to be done.

Trial fitting of retracts again. Epoxied some spuce in a couple of places to beef the rails and supports up then
checking that the retracts an open and close, lock smoothly and the gear doors lay flush with the wing skin.Ok all good so far.Bit of grinding of timber here and there so I can actually get those retracts in and
out for maintenance etc.

Now to reinforce with carbon fiber. Cut out the cloth, trail fitted, trimmed then mixed up a batch of LY3600 epoxy resin, applied then left to cure over night.

Sunday I took out the Astrohog and Pica Spitfire again but wind was mainly cross wind so only flew the hog which is easy to sideslip in. Spit will tip stall if you try that. So 4 flights later, lots of yakking and coffee drinking was time to head home

Detour to a friends place for lunch which was nice.Back to the shed and a bit more work on the 47.

Sanded down the rough and sharp spots. Will do another trial fitting then onto squirt some yellow chormate primer colour under the gear doors and within the gear wells.

Next job is to fit the ailerons and flaps, fit horns and check movement etc.

It will then be time to put the wing aside and work on the fuz, mainly the cowl fittment and some fiddly jobs with magnets on the access hatches. Make up a fitting for the dummy antenna so it can be removed.I think by that stage it is time to start planning the painting of this bird.

Looking good Pete, but with your summer coming on I would think you will get more flying time in, at least I hope so.

Well I finally got a bench cleaned off to put the Corsair wing on, and started the inspection of the damaged areas, with the covering on they did not look to bad, but as I started pulling covering and control surfaces there is some major damage leading edge and some sheeting popped off, but no cracked spars so it is repairable, just a lot more work than I originally thought. have decided to go with west system epoxy and glass and paint, just hope I don't pick up to much weight.

weather hear is getting a bit cold, and have just about got all of my out side chores ready for old man winter

Bob,
yes mate it is coming along again. Very good to be back on it.

We fly all year round here, weather especially in Queensland is very temperate.

Those wing repairs sound not so bad mate, should be an easy fix for you.

By the way not sure if you and the others are aware but there is a new finishing resin out by Deluxe systems that is water based, cures in a couple of hours and no fumes or toxicity to worry about. It sand back easily and is very light.

A few of the guys I know swear bt it.

BD37 is the product number.

cheers

Hay Tom good you are getting a day or so in. Hear the weather has been the pitts, nice day with wind 15 to 30, then work inter fears, so have been stuck in the shop or yard, I can only stand about an hour at a time picking the D#$%M plastic covering off

no work last night, waqs in a lazy mood and veged out on the couch with the TV and takaway chinese.

None tonight either as girlie has invited me over for dinner at hers. Beats takeaway!

Hey Bob have you tried one of those cover tugger gadgets to put the covering off? Might save a bit of pain in your hands. Tower has them.
