Giant AT-6 test flight
One of our club members test flew a giant AT-6 today at the Rockwall club field. I’m not sure who made the kit. It’s a fiberglass fuselage. Power is a G-62, weight around 30 pounds, wing loading around 50 ounces. The file is 13-14 mb so it takes a while to download if you do not have a high speed connection.

Hi Carrell-
It's a Byron kit. I have the same thing sitting in my shop waiting to be built. If you know the owner, could you find out what exhaust system he used - I like it!
Thanks

I'll email the owner today about the exhaust.
I agree about the music; I'd rather just hear the plane. From what I've been told, following a plane with a camcorder is not easy. Most RC videos are like this one, or are very choppy where they edited out the blurry parts and the parts where they lost the plane.

The plane is a Yellow Aircraft Texan powered by a G62.
I should know, I bought it
I was also the pilot in the video.
This is a joint effort between me and the builder Bob Laserve for scale competition.
The plane handles great.
Sorry you don't like the music, but the drone of the engine gets old after 4 minutes.

Also, the plane wasn't really supposed to fly yet.
We were going to just taxi test it to see if any of the handmade hinges and other parts worked loose.
That last run down the runway we were going to just hop it a few feet in the air to see if it had weird takeoff habits, but it just floated up and up and away we went lol
2 clicks of right aileron and 2 clicks of up elevator is all it needed.
Now the finishing job is next which should take a few months with all the detail planned for this plane.

Ronnie,
The Texan really looks nice. I couldn't help but chuckle about the "tire kickers" comment. Don't you guys just love it when you put your heart and sole into taking about a year to build a really nice scale warbird, and some guy at the feild wants to if it's an ARF. Whe I get that question I just shake my head. Anyway, can't wait to see her all dressed up. Best of luck.

Thanks Mark.
As for the exhaust, Bob pretty much fabricated most of it. He made a nice little Y there in the end that blows out the scale fiberglass exhaust tube.

Here's a little more info from Bob regarding the exhaust:
======================
The muffler on the engine is a B&B muffler with smoke . The two outlets from the muffler are diverted with auto hose to a two to one manifold I made of fiberglass using the lost foam method , which exhausts at the scale location.

I thought I had saved the photos Bob sent to the Greencville club mail list but cannot find them.

Byron had a scale exhaust adapter for the G62 for use with their AT6 which is the same size as the YA kit. You might want to see if Iron Bay still carries these in stock. They work great and look quite scale.

RE: Giant AT-6 test flight
Plane looks well built and I like the music in the in the video. But it needs to be in the back ground. Music in a video like ours sounds much better in the back ground. If you still have the unedited video try mixing the music in a little lower in volume. If you have the time to redo it please PM me so I can look at it.
When videoing:
• Try using and Tripod it will make a huge difference
• If you try to keep and tight shot on the plane when it is far away and moving some camera will lose focus. Un-zoom a little you should notice the change.
• Editing, editing and more editing. If you have a digital cam and a PC with the right software. Well you can go PRO! LOL
• There are some video capture cards for pc’s as well for those who do not have digital cams
Making a great video is art and takes practice. I can not wait to see your finished plane!

thanks guys
no the fiberglass didnt distort yet. There is alot of hose so the exhaust gas is losing alot of tempature by the time it reaches the glass.
Time will tell.

RE: Giant AT-6 test flight
Ya - IB will SAY they do. I have been waiting for gear wells and an engine mount from them since November !!! I called last week and was told that they "forgot" to ship it out. They then told me it would go out the next day - one week and still waiting.... Anyone know if YA parts will fit my Byron kit?

Hmm! strange concept, take off with flaps and land without them. Well it looked like it worked well so maybe I should try it, the other way doesnt always look that good for me.
Good Luck

RE: Giant AT-6 test flight
actually I was test taxiing with full flaps to check the ground handling.
The plane becomes very squirly on the ground with full flap deflection.
I took off with the flaps at 10%
I didnt get to check the behavior with full flaps in the air so I decided to land without, thankfully everything worked out just fine.
