Default which prop for my 60 size H9 P-51? w/Saito 100

Just picked up a Saito 100 to put on my Hangar 9 60 size P-51. I'm trying to figure out what prop to put on this thing. Any suggestions? what are you guys using that seems to work well. Anybody ever put a 4 bladed prop on one? I have not figured out how much ground clearance I will have. I thought I would put a Sullivan tail wheel (w/ spring) instead of the stock tail wheel assy, but this will lift the rear up a bit more than stock.
Any mods I should make when I put the ARF together?

Prop is 14x8 2-blade for the Saito 100. A 4-bladed prop would look dinky and silly. You will have plenty of ground clearance because the Mustang has a nose high stance. In fact, you have enough ground clearance for a 19" diameter prop.

Well, I've never built or flown the plane but I've seen TONS of posts about reinforcing the firewall on anything H-9 makes.

thanks for the info. 14x8 it is. how bout the sullivan tail wheel. should i put it on or go with the stock wheel? I have also read quite a bit about the retracts. I;m thinking i will just use the stock ones for now until they break. any reason why this is not a good idea? They were installed on the ARF from the factory.

You will find out soon enough about the stock retracts.

If adjusted properly and you land the plane gently (Not a hard thing to do with this one) , the stock retracts will be fine. I had two and only had the one retract collapse due to the servo throw being off and not locking the gear down. That of course, was my fault. Fixed and no more problems.

I ran the OS120FS with 14x10 and they both zipped along well. One died when the elevator servo let go (Hitec 605BB) after 40 hous of full throttle flight. I actually flew it all they way down using the throttle but couldn't slow it down enough. You'd power up to get the nose up and it would pick up speed, back to idle and she'd slow but then she'd drop and pick up speed again. I set it down level in the tall grass and caught a rut breaking the wing in half. The fuse still flies with another owner. The other sold due to boredom.

I have seen the plastic link at on the lock rod break on some, usually due to heavy side load, don't turn till she stops is the answer.

It's a great plane, the covering will not last long unless they fixed it.

Enjoy !

I'M USING A 16X6 MASTER AIRSCREW ON A OS .91 4 STROKE. GETTING ABOUT 8000RPM'S. THIS COMBO WORKS GREAT, PULLS LIKE A 747, AND SIPS GAS! SOUNDS CRAZY, BUT I GOT A 53 MIN. FLIGHT JUST ABOVE IDLE THIS THIS COMBO. 20 MIN. WITH THE GAS ON ARE THE NORM. THE SATIO SHOULDN'T HAVE ANY PROBLEM TWISTING A 16X6, JUST REMEMBER TO REINFORCE THE FIRE WALL BEFORE YOU FLY THIS THING. H-9 SKIMPED ON THE GLUE ON SOME BIRDS IN THIS AREA.

16x6 prop on the OS .91? You got to be kidding. This is like driving up a very steep hill in 4th gear on your car or truck. Believe me, this engine does not like to run at 8K rpm. You are way outside the engine's power band. The YS .91 can't even swing a 16x6 prop, and that engine is way more powerful than the OS 91.

Using a 16x6 is a good way to expedite the lifespan of a 91, especially an OS. I once overpropped a 120 Surpass III-P. It lost 300 rpm after a while.
