I've read the first two pages of this thread and this one.I'm keen on building a decent sized scale model of this aeroplane. My question is what engine gives the most realistic sound?
I'm ex rnzaf post spitfire era but have heard a few spits running. The packard engined version sounds muffled and flat to me where-as the smaller original merlin engine has a nice crisp bark to it.What model engine comes closest to that sound do you think?

non, i am afraid, nearest i have heard is the 200 in line twin from Saito, but its a dear motor,
there is alwats electric, the up and coming sound systems are getting better, but, get one that sounds like a Griffon, for our Spit is the MK14, the early ones had Merlins,

Hi guys
I am going to put the RGCF 26CC gasser in mine. If we look on KMP website they sell Monters servos at very good prices (matal gears!). Are they cheap chinees servos or something that we could put safely in the spitfire?

Hi: The servos are of very good quality. We have tested all version of them (YES.... FLYING IN AIRPLANES!!). We guarantee everything we sell.

Thanks for the feedback Andrew!

Since this is a spitfire thread, could you recommend us the Monster servos parts number required for the control surfaces, retrac and flaps please?

I do not know if that thread is still alive but i woul dapreicate if someone could explain me how he does to fill the air tank inside the plane with the KMP retrack kit?

I have an air compressor with 3 different adaters and none fit with the KMP air fill valve.
I think i am going to replace the tubing, valves with a Robart system..[].

With the exception of the gear actuators themselves, I replaced all the air system components that came with the kit with Robart components. There were just too many negative comments on the supplied air system parts, so I didn't fool with them at all...I think Robart has a package that includes the valve, filler, tank and tubing....

Hi Daniel,
Why would you change the KMP retract system??
I'use them since one year, and i didn't have any problems.....
I just use an bicycle pump to fill the air...
I would prefer buy the robart's legs......

That looks just like it...I think the valve is for air-up/air-down actuators but the instructions tell you how to plumb it for air-up/spring-down actuators. I think you will like it. The valve is very nice and should last forever, and it works very smoothly and doesn't leak...and you can adjust the retract rate....but get some inline restrictors too, you can make the retract rate nearly scale..

Hello Christophe
The retrack struts kit itself seem very good but as explained earlier, the filling air valve that comes with the kit is not standard and i can not plug my air compressor in the KMP air filling valve. Let me kknow if you have a photo of your air fill valve and i'll try to post mine tonight.

Where to you plug the bicycle pump to fill the air tank? The second photo shows the air valve, not the air fill valve

The pump is plug on the tube that is on the air scoop and that's all. there is no air fill valve needed....the air valve do that.

Here is the new KMP fill valve and cylinder. Like you can see, it's impossible to fill the air tank through the fill valve without a special adapter that i can not find. It seems i have to order the robart kit..

I did exactly what Randy did. I've had my spit about a month and have not started on it, but I hooked up the retracts to see how they'd work. They worked fine, but I didn't like the fact they go up/down so fast, and after I got done playing I let it sit around. A few hours later....no air. Seemed to me that the black hose they provide is a little hard. I ordered the robart 188VRX standard deluxe kit. Advantages? The quick disconnects are better, the T's are better, the fill valve is better, the hose is more supple, and it comes with the Red control valve that allows you to set the up/down rate. The only think I notice is the robart kit uses smaller fittings, but the hose did go on the KMP acuators. using this setup I like the performance of the system better and it held air.

I'll be much more confident in this setup.

And another thing....I went to fly the other day but cleverly forgot my compressor and Robart filler fitting....but at least two other flyers had the Robart fitting and I was able to fill and re-fill the air tank and fly a few times....I think you will be happy with the Robart setup for the retracts, and get some quick disconnects too, and extra set will let you run the gear up on the bench with a simple hose direct from your compressor....I would not recommend their scale wheels for this model though...they look great but the rolling resistance is high and the Spit likes to nose over on roll-out and takeoff anyway....I used Dubro 4" treaded light weight wheels and chucked them up in the drill press and sanded them with 60 grit paper to about 3.75", then grooved them with an x-acto knife while turning them in the drill....they work great.....the supplied wheels also worked great, but I managed to break a hub and so needed to replace them....

good point!
We have some warbirds addicted at the field and they all use robart systems. In the mean time, i am installing the RCGF-26 gasser in the nose.
Ciao!

have a million questions, new at this. first build. working on a spit by topflite. ready to start covering. went to order monokote and found that the matching paint for the monokote which is called lustrekote has been discontinued. (dove gray and olive drab) was wondering if you good people would be able to point me in the right direction as to where to get good quality covering and paints to do the job. i didnt think using monokote with paint from another manufacturer would be a good match??? any help would be appreciated. thanks, gary

Try www.balsausa.com and look at the solartex fabric covering.... Not 100% scale but it is a very fine weave fabric and it is great to work with. You could send a patch of covering material to www.warbirdcolors.com and I think they can mix paint to match..

Good Luck!

If anybody has an extra air vent laying around (one of two that mounts on bottom of wing), I'll pay for shipping to send to me. Send me a private message.

One of mine disintegrated on a rough landing.

Good Morning.

I have just started to build the YT spitfire and have hit a problem straight away.

In the instruction book it says that the aileron servo bay centre is 160mm from the leading edge, and 420mm from the wingtip, this on my wing is a solid piece of wood, around the spar area.
My question is, where is the servo bay?

Aft of this is just a large open area between ribs, fwd of this is open but this is well outside the measurments given in the book.

Any help appreciated.
Many thanks
Darryl
