RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Ok, here's the vid of the maiden...Not too proud of the landing attempts, but in my defence, there was a gusty headwind directly down the runway. I had put the maiden off long enough, so today was the day. she lifted off way before I expected her to, the G62 hed more than enough power, she was rock solid in flight. I added roughtly two to three click of down trim, and about two clicks of left trim. Very, very smooth in level flight. I became nervous on approach, as the gusts were very unpredictable.....I did, however, bring her home in one peice... WHEW!

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Hey Guys, I just acquired part of a Top Flite Giant Scale Corsair today. I got the wing, the robart retracts, a fiberglass cowl and a G-62, unfortunately the guy I got it from had a bad landing and the fuselage was damaged. He stripped everything out of it and layed it in the garage and his kid put it out with the trash by mistake. Does anybody have a fuselage they would sell or can you purchase just a fuselage kit? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

I checked out Tower & the Top Flite site. You could contact them directly to see if they have a replacement.
I'd recommend buying the kit and then you'll have a spare wing for that occasional accident.
Or better yet, you can sell your wing kit here on RCU as well as the extra parts you won't need. Your fuse will be much cheaper then!

Thanks for all the input. I checked on the website for the parts, almost the price of the kit and still wouldn't know if I had everything I needed. Looks like I will be purchasing the kit. Thanks for all the ideas.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
There is a lot of misinformation about this plane. Most egregious is that is a 'birdcage' model and the oldest flying variant. Birdcage models were last made in the 17430 range of production. This model was found in an old rail yard in Provo and indeed had a birdcage canopy on it at the time. However, all birdcage versions also had clear windows behind the sliding canopy. This plane does not and did not have clear windows.
Hopefully, it can be restored to its original condition if a -1A canopy can be found. I have pics of it in the Provo rail yard if anyone is interested.
Also, the "engine problems" Doan had was that he was hotdogging it off the coast of Florida and ran out of gas. All engines have problems when they have no gas.

The story behind that Corsair goes like this. It is the rarest of all the Corsair variants still flying, it is F4U-1A BuNo 17995, it is an original “bird cage” variant. After the war, the aircraft had been used as a war memorial in Provo, Utah, but when its condition went down hill, the airframe wound up in a local junkyard. It was rescued from there by the late Harry Doan in 1965. Doan slowly rebuilt the Corsair back to flying condition, making the first post-restoration flight during March 1982. Unfortunately, after experiencing engine problems, Harry crashed-landed the Corsair in the ocean near New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Quickly recovered from the salt water, Doan once again restored the fighter which flew again on 11 March 1989. After going through several owners, the Corsair was obtained in 1990 by Alpine Fighter Collection in New Zealand. Registered ZK-FUI, the plane was painted as a Royal New Zealand Air Force example. A couple of years ago, the fighter was sold to a new aviation museum in Brazil. It’s sad to see important pieces of American aviation history like this go to foreign countries, but you can’t control private property. The picture is of the late Harry Doan flying his rare junkyard Corsair over Florida in March of 1983.

OK guys, update on the slow repairs.
I decided to redo the flaps. Being I wasn't real happy with the old ones.
These pics show the new TE and the new center flap. I was able to reuse the inner and outer flaps.
Also got the ribs installed and now I'm waiting on wood.
I'm also going to cut the otherside too. Being I've made this big a mess, I might as well fix everything I'm not satisfied with.
More to come,
Kelly

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
My eldest son and I took the Corsair out to our friend's flying field for some serious taxi testing. I found that there is a point between when I let up on elevator input and the plane gets going fast enough for the rudder to be effective where it wants to swing. Once speed is built up then less rudder is needed. So far nothing has shaken loose (except for sawdust and stuff). When the main gear compresses the tire rubs a bit on the front strut cover. I'm not sure if I need to add some stiffer springs or shave a bit off the door. I am in the process of putting together a short video of the taxiing. Below are two pix - one with my son and one with me and the plane.

Thanks for the kind words.. Although it does look like a great day for a maiden, it was actually getting on towards dusk. The camera's flash really added a neat look to the pics. I'm also pretty impressed with the old G62. Stock mag ignition, and it idles bettter than any other engine I have! I think if I get to fly some more this month we'll have the Corsair airborne before it's over. I'm the one with the graying hair!
