RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Hey guys I need some help.
Does anyone have some scale documentation showing the sizes of the trim tabs and such. I want to install all these things but I can't find a reference to go from to be somewhat accurate.. I have a 1/48 model but nothing seems to add up properly. I take 48 and divide that by 5.75 and get 8.3475 but it doesn't seem to work. What am I doing wrong?
Thank you,
Randy

Why are you dividing 48 by anything? Multiply 48X12 that will give you the full scale inches. Then multiply that by the scale factor of your plane. That will give you the scale inches. Or you can just take a percentage of the trim tabs vs the 1:48 model and multiply that by your planes scale inches.

Math was never my strong point and I'm not embarassed to say so either.

Your scale factor of 8.3475 should be right according to my math. Any dimension on the 1:48 scale model multiplied by 8.3475 should give you the dimension for the 1:5.75 model.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Hi guys,
Did not do the maiden today. Too many little things to still re-check. Ran the engine again with the cowl off and nothing shook loose this time. Will run it again with the cowl to make sure the mounting is solid. Double check the throws, sub trim, flap linkage, hope for good weather Saturday, and say a prayer....
Here are a few shots from the drive way...
Thanks for all your help.

Nick,
Good luck with the maiden, and good for you to not be rushed into it. I'm still going to check CG with my pilot figure, and hopefully get some more stick time before I try mine. Please do post vid. Your plane looks great!

Thanks. The pilot is from Aces of Iron. They come unpainted. Greg Pierson painted it for me. His contact info is on the Aces of Iron web site. Very reasonable. I painted one myself a while back. It looked "OK", but Greg's work is off the charts.

Yeah baby! Nice job Nick! That feels good I'll bet huh? Baby just leaped right up in the air on take off and climbed out really nice. Great power for the plane for sure. Looks like it takes a pretty consistent management of speed on the landing with this thing I noticed, but you did a nice job smoothing out the descent while learning what she needs for sure. From here on out it's hopefully butter! Thanks for posting Terry...nice camera work. Must get my bird ready, cuz that sure does fly good.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Thanks guys. Just now got to view the video. Nice work Terry! Engine was WAY rich, and I did the one thing I told myself I wouldn't do; get too slow on landing !! It dropped the last foot or so. Two of the cowl mounting stand-offs came loose and the axle on the port landing gear bent a bit when it stalled and fell. It won't be ready to go tomorrow, but next weekend better be nice weather !!
I've got some stills I'll post later. Someone (wife) left the camera on and drained the batteries!!
Thanks to all of you for your support and encouragement. When you spend 13 months building a plane, you go through the highs and lows, getting excited then getting frustrated and taking some time off. In the end, I can't think of a better way to have spent the last 13 months!!

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Yup, that first flight is so nerve racking. If a bent axle and a couple of cowl screws is what it takes to get it done on flight one, that's ok by me. The thing looks like it drops out of the sky pretty fast dropping to idle. I will remember watching this video on my first flight. It seems like my preference for higher than average landing speed might be right up this birds alley. I gotta get cracking and get to the field! Great motivation, especially since my bird is in the same scheme!
