You don't have to hold off flying while you're building tanks and bombs!
What was the process you used to paint your Robarts?
They look great and I'd like to dress up an old pair.

Got a new issue Gents. I was tearing up the sky today, when we heard the unmistakable sound of flutter on a full throttle high speed pass. I was able to throttle back fast enough and nurse her back to earth before anything ugly happened.. Upon initial inspection, I found these cracks along side the fuse at the base of the fin..... I haven't had a chance to do a internal biopsy, but I'm not at all happy about this. She was going to be my flagship airplane for this 2011 flyinn season... anyone else have such a problem?

Nice save Phil!
It looks like it was the elevator fluttering. Do you have any play in the elevators?

AT the beginning with my corsair I had a lot of flutter on my elevetor, here what I did, no more flutter at all, I use an Evoultion 58GX2 with a 24x8 prop

That looks like the area that you would have installed the carved block. Perhaps you didn't get enough glue on it when you installed it. In any case see if you can get at it from the tailwheel side and use an inspection mirror to look at the area.

I would think that is flutter damage. Probubly not a weak spot. Flutter is VERY stressful on an airframe. You are lucky to still have an airplane.

Find out what caused the flutter.

You got that right Kelly!! (wiping sweat off my brow) I was doing some screaming low passes at full throttle... I'll get into her in the next few days, there is (now anyway) some play in the elevators, there wasnt before.....

In the 3 to 4 years Ive followed this thread I think yours is the first Ive heard of to flutter. I always been leary of the rudder on mine as it can be dflected L & R tons due to the slop in the torque rod bearing tube, never thought the elevators would be an issue. Do you have any ideal how fast she may have been going? I think I would base my level of concern off of how much you open the crack by gently moving the L & R elevator tips back and forth. I think the bulk of the strength comes from the fuse sides and bottom. Maybe stronger servos or one with less gear slop and move in on the control arm if possible.

Maybe as a tutorial and guide for others to learn from post a pic or two of the inside of the fuse showing the servo, arms and linkages.
Glad you got her back in one piece.

duber3, sorry I missed your comment on having had flutter also. Guess moving the horns to the outside would be a good option depending on whether or not you hid all of the other controls to keep it clean.

Hi Guys

Been lurking about and thought I would add my 2 pennys in hear on my first bird befor this thread I found I had some flutter but my chief test pilot got it down, any way the problem I found was the firly soft l/e of the elevators and the block furnished, had to pull them off, plug the holes re drill then harden with c/a, next flight did not see hear any flutter but when the engine quit it flew like a brick my it r.i.p.

So when I built my current bird I put some 1/4 hard wood dowel in and then used a # drill size to match the rod and put the tube in as close to to the inside as I could, and moved the inboard hinge point right up next to it. Any way have not had any sign's of flutted with it.

Since I have not glued in my Elevetor yet I think I puta short piece of tubing in the hole and that should do the trick.

Randy

As long as it is a close fit that should be fine, at the time I did not have any tubing that was close enought hence the h/wood dowel.

It depends on which type of hinge you have. If it's a pocket (scale) hinge, then they seal themselves. If you have sport hinges, then they need to have a peice of tape or covering on the bottom of the hinge line. (running length ways) Just deflect the control surface full up and you should be able to get to the bottom of the hinge and get the tape down deep in the hinge.
hope this helps,
Kelly

D

If you seal your hing line use clear tape, put it on wax paper to flod it start and slide out the wax paper, it is a slow process to deal with but worked for me a few years (about 30) I think.

As far as flutter use the longest horns you can find and captive ball joints, NO flutter

Ok here are some pics in the driveway. I have the 19/10 3 blade on it for the photo shoot. I will maiden with a 22/10. She weights 32lbs with 2 lbs of lead in the nose.

I checked the balance at 5-1/4" back and she is still tail heavy. That dimention is pretty far in front of the main spar. Is every one balancing out at about 1" in front of the main spar?

Here are some more pics. I am really happy with the way the access door on the side that hides my switches, fuel fill, air fill, and pressure gauge turned out.

Thumbs up Devs. Ya did a great job. Good looking scheme. Dont worry on the all up weight as it relates to getting her balanced. I have never seen one that didn't fly well.
