B-squared,

Your progress looks great. I am at the start of the fuse build and am studying the plans. I think the the firewall needs to be moved back 1 inch to have the engine thrust washer in tha same place as the plans. I an going to build a longer firewall to accommodate the Saito mount. Saito says the engine uses 60cc a minute at full throttle so I think you have the right idea on tank size. I will check out your build as it looks cool.

Dave...The mounts are reversible on that engine...that may put all the mounting holes in good wood for you. I ended up changing the mounts around and it helped a lot.

I dug up some pics...the first is the old mount, the second is the new and improved (the second pic is with the original firewall...I'm now on version two).

Hi guys, I managed to get my hands on a Top Flite Corsair kit and am very keen to start building. I have been reading through quite a bit of the posts on here and there really is a lot of good info. I am planning on modelling mine after a F4U-5NL. Can somebody maybe help me out with regards to the major differences between the other versions of Corsairs and the 5NL?

As far as I can pick up on the actual aircraft:
1) there are 2 scoops on the side of the cowl( 4 and 8 o'clock)
2) towards the back of the cowl it seems to flatten out a bit( is the fuse also flat)
3) exhuast exit positions
4) an all metal wing skin

I do not plan on making the model Top Gun quality but would like to give it a bit more of a scale appearance than the standard kit. I attached a pic of the full size I want to model.

Thanks in the mean time and goodluck to everybody still busy with their builds.

Regards

Gryper

I am not sure what books are available to you but, one is called " Flight Jurnel" Special Issue, when I did mine I used our local libary you can also use the (Chance Vought) history site Sorry I can't give you exact info as I had a H/D crash befor I got most of my info backed up. as for the cowl I used the cowl from fiberglass specilties and to get the scoops you would have remold those sections, I have used modeling clay to mod things and it works well but I am slow to get the shaps I wanted. you might a;so look up a modeler with a handle of Chad Vic he has been a good sorce of info.

Hope this helps

Cheers Bob T

Gryper,

As you have already noted the most visible trait are the twin scoopes. What is difficult to find are pics that clearly show the bulge along the sides of the cowl and how far these carry back along the fuse. The bulge or flair starts way back about where the mainspar would pass through the fuse. The scoopes give the cowl an egg or oval shape when viewed from the front. This oval shape continues with the -6 that was renamed the AU-1. On the AU-1 the bulges are there but the opening for the scoopes have been removed. On the -7, the last corsair produced a chin scoop was added to the cowl similar to what the -4 model had. Yes, the -5 and AU-1 cowl lose a lot of the roundness on the bottom between the scoopes. I would refer to it has almost flat or semi flat and it carrys on into the fuse. Sorry for including the 3-view drawing and the pic on the right of an AU-1, but they give you the general over all shape of the -5 model.

One other thing unique to the 5NL was since it was a night fighter the cannons had flash surpressors. Also the canopy, the front windscreen or glass should be flat and not round as the case with the canopy supplied in the TF kit.

Gryper,
Hey here is one more that really shows the shape of the cowl as well as the fuse back where the bulge starts. I think this is the same plane as you have in your post above.

Thank you for the replies gentleman.

The info already gave me a better idea as to how to go about the cowl.

I will keep you posted on my progress.

This is all great info , here's a pic of the mod's on my Brain Taylor F4U-5N.

Another advantage of the -5 is the full scale cowl is about 19" longer so, you can mount the engine further forward thus reducing the amount of lead for balancing.
The cowl flaps had been lengthened to help achieve this.

Hi there

I was wondering if anybody here has modified the kit to a -5NL model? If so, how did you go about it?

From what I can gather from the internet, I would need to lengthen the fuselage around 3inches. This will all be done to the nose section. I was thinking of moving all the forward formers towards the engine(including the whole box that the engine gets mounted onto). Bad idea?

Any comments/suggestions will be appreciated.

I was going to comment that someone just asked that same question and got some good replies over the last week - then I realized you were the one that asked it. Look up.

I obviously wasn't paying attention when reading through the post!So sorry . Just to confirm, the fuselage stays the same(except for the flattening at the bottom) and it was only the cowl that was lengthened?

I will still appreciate some help on moving the engine forward. Can I build the fuse as per plan and then just insert a ply spacer to move the engine forward and does 3inches sound right for the lengthening?

Thanks again Cobra

I should also add that this is my first build of this size and also first time gasser, so I'm not too familiar with what kind of forces etc. are involved.

I'm not sure about the 3", my mods were on a 82" 1/6th scale version.

Hi Pappy

Can you remember how much you added to the nose? Th TF Corsair is 86" so it will be pretty close.

I just did some quick math , 1.5 " is pretty close for your 86" Corsair.

Guys, I have 1/5 Corsair panel, gunsight and a set of switches for sale. I got 2 kits by mistake, since I thought the initial package got lost.
It's $90 shipped to a Canada location (I have the package in Canada) so no GST for you guys.
PM me if interested,
Cheers,Vasek
