I have had several giant scale planes(Extra, Edge 540) and my first sat in the trailer for over six months before I had the nerve to fly it. But once in the air it flew and landed nicer than any .60 size trainer I had flown....Get her in the air and enjoy!!!!

I will this year after I fix the tail wheel that caused me to snip the tips off my $100 CF prop. I still need to locate long enough springs to attach it to the rudder so I can turn it on grass. It never dawned on me until it was too late that castoring only really works on very short grass or pavement, otherwise I would have waited to get the tail wheel springs connected.

Going to be a busy flying season, I hope the weather is better with not so strong southwest winds. I have at least 4 planes that will be ready to maiden, not including the Extra 330 and my 4 already flying planes. The year before I had done twice as much flying than last year, only because the corn was way too high and the crazy strong winds last year. I dont mind flying in wind, except when it is out of the south, because of buildings by the field it creates some nasty vortices that toss the planes around and makes it very hard to land. There were times I had to crab the planes in where the nose was nearly pointed south while coming in from the east, then just as it gets past the building have to quickly correct the yaw to line it up to land. There were times that I just gave up and landed downwind, and risked running off the end. Good thing I practiced a lot of carrier landings and can drop the plane on the numbers from 10' up.

Yeah, that sounds a bit tough. I used to land in almost identical conditions flying full scale. Quite a few white knuckle landings.

Hi guys,
I'm trying to do a little research before I pull the trigger to buy.
Has this kit stayed the same through the years or has there been any updates by Top Flite? I really would like to get one to put on the shelf until I finish my up coming Bates F8F Bearcat build. I've been reading through this thread for a while now and the Flaps build section has me concerned. Seems like that part of the build for me would be the hardest part. I've never built flaps before. lol How does this plane fly, does it come in fast on landings? Does it feel like it will fall out of the sky when slowed down? I would definitely be glassing/ painting and would power it with a G62. Not sure about the retracts though.
Thanks.

Hello,

I have the RF GS Corsair Gold Edition kit. I was going to build it in the winters in NE WA. But we have started snow birding to AZ for the winters. I likely will not build it here. I was getting ready to put it on Ebay for $265. It also comes with the TF Cockpit kit and a semi open cowl flaps cowl for this kit. Regards John

Don't worry just buy and build! This was may first ever build 3 yrs ago, really easy just follow instructions. I have. Dle 55 in mine, landings are super slow. One of my easiest flying warbirds ever!

Thanks predman, did you have to add a lot of weight to the nose with the DLE 55?

I would expect 4# to 6# depending on how heavy you build behind the CG.

4 to 6lbs? Is that normal for this plane? Also, I notice where the wing tips join the the center section, it doesn't look like there's a lot holding it on. Has anyone ever had a wing tip fold on them?

The tips to the outer wing panels? Solid as a rock.

Nah, you don't need to worry at all. The whole wing in my opinion is solid as a rock. As for the flaps, if you can read and follow the instructions then you got it licked.. If you are concerned about where the wing joins then you can put a through bolt into a t-nut top and bottom and never give it another thought. This is a well designed airplane and a pleasure to build. I say go for it. You can always modify it to suit your likings. Steve.

@ Drube. Flaps are very straight forward and work well, though I didn't use the internal wood control horn, I just put an external standard style horn on them set up just like the ailerons, and it works great. Plane slows way down on landing, so much so that it tends to stop flying if you don't watch it. When it does stall, it tip stalls to the left however, unlike the TF P51 that stalls straight ahead.

Mine is glassed and weights 28lbs with a Saito 300 twin and I only needed to add 27 oz. of weight over the engine, and filling the spinner with lead. The twin sounds great, with a big 24" prop and everyone thinks it's a radial. I like the way if flys that I'm now in the middle of a 1/4 scale build.

Oh, and I used the Robart electric retracts running off of a sub C cell 3900mh pack that powers the receiver too. I would recommend them HIGHLY! So easy at the field, no air pumps, checking pressure, refilling after every flight. And the sight of a low and slow full flaps gear pass with the wheels slowly coming down is a crowd pleaser. I just need to add the gear doors now.

Thanks for your input, I may have to pick one up sooner than I planned. Sounds good! I may have to put the Bearcat on hold.. I'll need to ponder this... lol
