Professional opinions needed here. I don't have the 4-40 rods that came for the elevators and the longest I can get locally is 36 inches which ain't gonna cut it. Any reason why I couldn't splice two together by silver soldering a tight fitting brass tube over the splice? I know flutter is an issue here and don't want to take unnessasary risks. The splice would be inside the pushrods tube and I can even locate it at a former for extra strength against side to side movement. Any thoughts?

Are you just trying to get by without ordered something? Instead of 4-40 rods, I am using carbon fiber rods for mine that i bought from Central Hobbies.

And IMHO, I think that would be OK as they recommend soldered clevis, so I see little difference.

Basically yeah. I have these on hand, and not a lot of hobby money at the time so I figured if it was sufficient then I'd use them. I feel it's strong enough but always prefer second and third opinions.

Cj, what did you use? The 4-40 size CF rods at 35 inches? Or the big boys they sell at 38 inches? Rough measuring tells me I need 38 or 39 inches.

Steve

I don't think you will have a problem wit ether size as long as you support the so that there is no flexing, if the kit as you got it had the grey plastic tubes I would run the C/F rods in them.

I think there good to go. I just soldered one up and pushed on each end as hard as I could with zero flex what so ever. I'm gonna go with it. Thanks guys.

Hi Steve,
for what its worth I think I used arrow shafts and 4-40 rods at both ends.

Honestly, it's been so long since I've worked on it, I forgot which ones I purchased. I went longer than needed knowing that I could always trim them, so 38" sounds about right though. I'll look again(and measure), and see what you'd really need. Seems like for the elevator, they were way long, and I will need to remove 4"-5", but the rudder rod was close to perfect.

Heya Guys,

Back home now, these pics were taken last year sometime, I got her out of her storage boxes mainly for the girlfriend to take photos to show her dad, he's ex airforce and was interested to see it, after these photos it went straight back into the boxes and gathering dust, maybe 'one day' i'll get to finish her, I have a worry about the wings or more to the point, gluing the three parts together (incidence?) I'll probably need advice on that, heres some pics

I can take some more detailed photo's tomorrow if it helps any of you gents give opinions as to what i should do or where i should start, thanks again

Looking good Mr.M. I've made a bit more progress. I ended up getting some 4-40 sized carbon fiber rods locally at the cost of my first born son. I feel better about it though. The elevator and rudder linkages are complete and the elevators and H stab have been hinged and rough shaped and sanded. Now I'll clean this pig sty so I can get ready to finish off the tail section and finish sheeting the fuse. For some reason I've been really looking forward to this point in the build. Finishing off the tail that is.

Sounds good Steve, just don't close things up to quick, been there done it and don't want to do it again.

As I have made a bit of progress on my bird Glassing done and been waiting for warm weather to start paint, but found out that if you thin your primer a bit thinner than you would spray you can brush it on for the first coat as you sand most of it off any way, just use a real fine bristle brush, seams to work but letting it dry over nite made a big difference on how it sands

Good to see you making progress too Bob. I decided to hold off on the tail anyhow and get the wing panels joined and mounted on the fuse. I generally don't like to add any tail feathers until closer to the end. I can be destructive trying to flip and turn the plane around.

If inlay have a one piece wing again. It's been a lot of extra work building it the way I have, but it's paying off now. Yesterday was pretty much spent checking and re checking over and over to make sure I had a straight and true wing with the proper incidences and what not. I feel pretty good about it. So now I'm working toward getting everything buttoned up and sanded for sheeting. What im thinking, and is quite subject to change, is to finish up the wing and get it glassed before moving on to finishing the fuse. Well see. Right now I'm working o he wheel well boxes . Pics coming soon.

One of my favorite parts of any build is when you first put all the parts together that you been working on and see what your really making. For the first time since I started building airplanes, I set the wing in place, clamped it where is "SHOULD" go, string checked it, and found it to be EXACTLY a where it should be. Wow! It feels like when you maiden a bird that requires zero trim. But I'm not going to let my head grow too much. I haven't checked the incidences yet. More to come. I should have weighed the original wing to see, but this one feels way lighter. Maybe it's just wishful thinking. I think I'll work on making up the sanding blocks for the leading edges.

Thanks George. There's still a couple other spots to drill out yet as well. I haven't forgot. I'm quite happy with the way the wing turned out. A couple times I wasn't so sure about myself. Still a bit of work left on the wing before I can close it up.

Thanks Bob. Today was the first time I sat down and started looking at paint schemes. Not sure what I want, but I don't want the same thing as everyone else. Nothing wrong with the popular schemes, I just want something different. I'm also thinking about where I'd like to make a couple of hatches for switches and such. I hate to just surface mount them.
