RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Cimara,
Thanks for the product info. I noticed a vibration isolation type of mount also. Are others using rubber vibration isolation mounts on there Corsairs? Does the mount you show attach to the firewall or do you use a mount like the GP large engine mount in addition?

Devens,
I bought the same mount that Winston has. I am using the isolation mounts along with an aluminum mount that I got off EBay. It's made just like the one from GP. I thought that would be good and make everything stronger. That's what I'm doing!

When you have the rubber mounts installed, I have found that when pulled up tight (snug), they work all most like a solid mount, and they still reduce the airframe vib's, I ysed the AC ply with the alum/plate to get the engine hub face just ahead of the cowel, and what ever you use make sure the mounting bolts eather have stop nuts or are drilled and are safty wired. 17 years of playing with these gasers has lead me to these suggestions.

Deven I am using the GP isolation mount with the mount pictured in my last post .The cup mount can be attached to the fire wall or to an isolation mount .

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Well Bob,
It isn't quite as impressive as a totall build but the list is:
TF giant p-51 ARF, Robart retracts (should have gotten Sierra) DA 50 w/ Kelo scale exhaust
GP Giant Cap 580 DA 100cc twin and all the carbonfiber and light goods I can put on it
GP Giant HAwk Bi-plane w/a ZDZ 40 F3a (lightweight engine)
others include a Dymond Bearcat, and GP minnow with a 1.20 AX in it...... Hoping it will hit 150mph mark....
The P-51 and cap 580 have only some fine details to be finished and then ready to maiden..... MIght maden them on same day in a week, not sure though if I want that much stress in one day!!!
How lond do you think it would take to put a TF 1/8 scale Corsair together??? w/ retracts??
Justin

I've not built a 1/8, but it it builds close to the same wayas the 1/5 my guess would be out of the box and no mods about a 120 hrs, so a time line might be 90 to 160 days. mabe one of the fellows that read this thread and have done one could give you a better estimate.
Hope this helps

Justin,
I am doing all the mods including lights and backlit instrument panel. I am on day 113 and am about 1/2 way done with the wing if you count the flaps and ailerons yet to be done. Otherwise without them 2/3 done with the wing before I can st it aside and build the fuselage. With the rest of the mods I think I'll be done by Chrismas. Just buiding it per plans I say 3 months from opening box to Maiden flight.
Good Luck,
Gibbs

cimara,
I am buying my WWII instruments from Hobby Lobby. They sell everything from 40 size up to 1/4 scale. The instruments are very nice and have a clear bezel on them. I'm checking into if I can backlight them as they are. If not I will make a very small hole in the center of the rear of each instrument and use a bright red LED in a Mini Maglite Cone to light em up from behind. I will position the light about 2 inches back of the panel so it lights up the whole area. I am hoping it will work well. By the way I received my Don Smith plans yesterday and shipped them off to Florida to have the kit cut. Today I received the Canopy from Don and for grins set it next to the Top Flight Giant Canopy. Heres a couple pictures of the size diffence. You were right when you said it will be HUGE.

remeber most of the fasterners in the forward fuse are duzds fasters and screws, A great way to simulate is to buy ton of model train screws. you cut off the shank and counersink hole using a dremel. They fit super, dont add lots of weight. pics coming

am using a fibreglass specialties cowl, and it appears to be about right. I havnt cut the front out of the cowl to fit it over the engine as yet, however there will be enough to move the cowl forward a little if needed
