Are you talking about just on the cowl if so there is just 3 the formers take most of the load .If your talking about the ply skeliton there is 6 to the fire wall .I am planning on putting some batterys up there to help with the nose weight and wanted the extra strenght
hope this helps

Hi Cimara aka Winston
been going back thru the last few pages, and was reviewing your exhaust stacks, so how did you attach them togrther? and how much volume do you have in your headder? and could the headder and crose over be larger?
No hurry on the ansures as this will go into next corsair

Thanks mate for your reply. I was talking about the atachments that you have JB welded to the inside of the cowl. I can only make out 3 points that attach to the ply skeliton.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Bob the square tubing is 1 inch square 2 are 4 3/8 long and 1 is 7 inches long and 1 inch long The large round tubing going from the manafold to the header is 3/4 of an inch by 2 . the manafold is 1 by 1.5 tubing thats 2.75 inches long and the 6 out put tubes are 1/2 inch tubing and average 2.5 inches long. The total volume of just the square and rectaguler parts are 19.68 qubic inches .I dont have the formula to figure the volume of the round tubes so i would guess a total of around 21 qubic inches hope i did the math right ( lenght x width x hight ) . If the header is the piece thats attaced to the engine alone that piece alone has a volume of 4 .43 qubic inches
Yes you could make it larger you could use that 1 by 1.5 tubing for most of it except the pieces that are 4 3/8 inches long
they are all welded together and the header is attached to the manafold with that silicon exaust tubing That has a very small gap between the to to reduce vibration beeing transferd to the fuse
Hope this helps
No problem Bill any time

Thanks again Winston you have shown some great stuff here. I intend to use most of your ideas to attach my cowl.

David,
I am going to wait and see what the wing is going to look like as far a strength and then decide on the folding wings. I want to do it but Don Smith said he wouldn't recommend it on that long a wing. I think if the wing is beefed up enough and I make the folding mechanism well it will be fine. Also Darrel at Sierra said he could set me up with the folding mechanism so I will probably let him. After all he makes great retracts and numerous other gadgets to special order. Sorry for the long delay in posting this but I have been assembling the Twist 150 and haven't been on this Forum for awhile. I have been concentrating on the ARF and RTF Forum instead. As soon as the building season starts again I hope to start a Group Build Thread on this Forum for the D.S. 1/4 scale Corsair.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Daddysam here, checking back in. I thought it was time to get going on the Corsair, since my Spit is gone. After thinking about the landing gear mounts, I tore out the basswood mounts and their reinforcing triangles. I made some mounts from maple, that went from the spar all the way to the leading edge. I made the mounts about an inch high, and then skipped the reinforcing triangles, and instead made "half ribs" from light ply, and epoxied them above the mounts. I may drill a few holes through and pin them, but overall I think the mounting for the retracts is now virtually indestructable (if the mounts bust the plane is probably totalled.....)

Daddy Sam,
That is very much like what I did way back when, although I did reinforce it by drilling in them and used some dowels this way here it will help keep it from racking in the event of a bad landing, did I say BAD?

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
This sure is a great resource. From the info I got here, I did inset the mounts 1/4 inch from the underside so that the screw heads and gear mounts will be recessed from the surface. I've got few other things to add before final sand and sheeting. Sheeting is ready for sanding. I'm thinking about using the internal aileron acutuator. Is that an easy thing to add after the wing is sheeted, or should I plan for it by drilling the hole now?
Thanks
Sam
Thanks

Hi Sam
my 2 pennys worth
You are at the stage to do or not to do some mods, If you are goiong for gear doors, plan the wheel wells and add ac ply ribbs it makes holding the hinges easer, and if you are planning on the tip mods now is the time to trim the under side of the 2 out board ribbs, you will have to go back in the thread to find "Corsairjock's " post, I would start abour page 35 and work both directions just look for the dwg's saves a lot of time.
Hope this helps

Bob
Thanks a bunch. I have started measuring out my gear door bay ribs. Will I need a new rib on each side of the wheel or just on the outboard side. It seems like on the one side the existing rib is pretty close, but if you think I'll need a new one on each side I can sure put them in now. I thought I'd space them out 1/4" from the tires to give room for the hinges. This way I can sand all the ribs at the same time. I'll check out the posts further back because I do want to make the tip mods.
Thanks a lot.

The best way for me was to install both ribbs and you will need to have your gear in the wing so that you get the ribbs parrall and perpendicular to the gear action, and allow a good 1/4 on the sides for your doorhinges and actuators. your planning is right on, but plan at least 3 steps ahead at all times so you don't ahve to back up.
Some of the fellows have built mock ups to get it right befor making a mistake in the wing
One thing I found that realy helped me, when I reviewed a thread for info I would keep notes different page for each thread with subject and post # I know it souns like a lot of work but it saved me time in the long run I also doun loaded all of the pic's into a folder that I thought would help,

All I can say now is what ever mods your planning on be it gear or flaps or ailerons ,you want to do them and check & recheck all of it BEFORE YOU SHEET THE WING,its a lot easier while there nothing there.
TRUST ME ON THIS ONE,
RT DON'T YOU AGREE

Yup George your right, and for me even when I plan ahead I still make mistakes as I think weve all been there and done it.
Sam most of all don't be afrade to ask questions, I am not an expert but with the number of people reading this thread, you will allways get ansures, maybe several and you will have to pick one that works for you
Now its time for some pic's

Yeah baby John! Sweet looking plane man. It's gonna be a good season next year! I think you're gonna beat me into the air with yours. Was able to cover and prime all my control surfaces. I have about as much left to do on mine as you do on yours I think.

Thanks Mike,
I thinking sometime next month. The plane represents the corsair my uncle flew for vbf-85 off the Shangri-La during WWII.
