welcome aboard Ryan,
nice to see a fellow heli pilot with other interests like myself. I promise I wont post on the heli forums that you are building a PLANK! hehe
There is a nice table of contents on the first post. It is still hard to find specifics because of the vastness of this thread so I personnally don't mind seeing the same questions asked by newbees [8D] feel free to pick our minds!
build on Garth! ... build on Wayne! [8D]

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Hi everyone,
I've been lurking here for a while now, drawing inspiration for my build. After much research and one on one correspondence with Mort Rosenthal and Pappy 883, (two awesome builders) I have jumped in and started building my TF Giant Corsair. I've planned on folding wings, sliding canopy, lights, gear doors and operating cowl flaps! Ambitious for sure...but it's a one way trip! I started with the wing fold and have combined both Mort's approach to locking anf Pappy's approach to the fold....still experimenting, working on a mock up, but everything so far looks good. I belong to a small RC club in Stephenville NF Canada, http://www.bsgflyers.org and have been posting pics of my build there. Any and all input would be appreciated.
Chris

Then the 62 is on the order list. I will post pics from time to time on the progress. I didn't get a chance to go to home depot yesterday to get my foam board and wax paper, so I will probably get that stuff today at lunch. I can't wait to start on this build and looking forward to the challenges.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Ok heres the mesurements on the attachment points and rim First the rim is 1/4 inch wide and 1/16 of an inch thick next the ball links for the rear they are placed .514 of an inch up from the bottom edge of the frame and.115 of an inch from the back edge . i glued them on with Jb quick . The front mounts are made from a small piece of brass tubing 1/4 of an inch square and 3/8 of an inch long i then drilled a hole for the ball link centered in the brass tubing and soldered them on the brass tubing . I then drilled several small hole on the opisite side of the brass tubing to give the jb quick some thing to hold on too . I place these centered on the frame and .84 of an inch up from the bottom of the frame .Next i cut the frame rim and mount to the frame using slow ca .I also added some carbon fiber stiffners to the inside of the frame to pull it in closer to the fuse

Everything makes sence but ware you added the c/fiber. I hate it when I am a dumm s@#$t maybe another pic will help
If you check over in the 47 thread you will see my effort on a canopy frame will have a better idea on succcess tomarrow. Had problems with the 4 oz cloth on the cornners of the wind screen, if I have to make a new one I will use .75 oz but add 2 more layers.

I defnatly would not call you dumb . You have been a great help to me on many ocasions Heres a better pic of the carbon fiber Bob Will have to trim the clear canopy to fit . its only there to pull the sides in a little to decrease the gap from the fuse to the frame

Bob on the frame for the 47 looks great by the way .The corners are the hardes part to do .I had to make several cuts on some to get them to lay down .I wouldnt make a new one i would just build that ares up with some resin and microballons sand to get the correct shape and a final layer of .75 once cloth to help keep it from poping off .

If you have not purchased your engine, consider the Saito 450R. I built the TF Giant Scale F4u when it was introduced about 11+ years ago and powered it with the 450R. You can't beat the sound of a radial engine and there was no need to add any weight to balance the plane. Since I was not interested in doing a scale job on this bird, I located the servos for the elevator toward the rear of the plane and used very short push rods. Because I was concerned about the flex with the rudder setup, I also place the servo for that surface in the rear of the plane. It is exposed, but it does provide positive rudder control.

Hey guys, I am trying to find a good picture of the hand hold areas on the wing tips, just ahead of the aileron tips. I am trying to confirm if the corsair had these, some 3 views show it some don't.

Hey Guys, I'm still here. Been sick for the last couple weeks. A week sick and a week to get over it.[&o] (dang)
Anyways I've got my flap mods done. Just need a little more tweaking and then back to the gear doors. I should be ready for glassing very soon.
Also,I need the colors for the Tri-scheme please. I've lost my color notes.
I'm going to try the Warbird Colors paint on this one. Has anyone else used this paint?
Thanks,
Kelly

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Cimara,
I have started the fold and have completed the right wing and just about finished the left. I will be using OSAs Wingman to control the fold but for now I am testing it with my radio. The bell crank on the locking pin will be used to open and close the hinge flap on the main spar. So far everything works smoothly and seems very strong. Hopefully will have the completed fold done this weekend.
I am using following Pappy883s wing fold method and hope to use Mort Rosenthal as inspiration for the hinge flaps.
Here are some pics.

G'Day kelly.
The Warbirds paint is a great way to go. I have found that if you follow Chucks directions and test the amount of thinning (I used water) before you shoot it on your bird it will come out great. Light coates, the first ones hardly noticable and let each coat flash off before the next. Hope this helps mate.
Regards.
Bill.
