RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Hey Zeeb, up here we refer to Minnesota as Canada's 11th province when it comes to winter weather and hockey...and it looks like you do have more snow but I can't see across the street now...we're in the middle of a 14 inch forecast storm.
I read about the 821s somewhere too, but I'm only using it to operate the rear doors so it should be ok. I actually tried breaking the ground to disable the servo but doing so also caused the rudder servo to stop. I know my wiring was correct but to be sure I simply ran two servos from the rudder out on my tx through a Y connector and broke the ground on one...sure enough the other servo stopped too. Must have something to do with the electronics inside the servo. I didn't try breaking the positive just grounded the signal which works fine. I didn't however think of the current drain in doing so....don't know if its an issue or not....anyone else have thoughts? I will rework it tomoorw to see if breaking the positive will work.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
I received my tailwheel and hook from Sam and it is a beautiful piece of functioning art It's a shame I have to hide it inside the fuselage. Ok here is where I need some help...There is just a couple of things left to pick up before I start the build
Main Wheels - Looking at the Robart 8 spoke 4.5" or 5"?
Nose wheel style or brake hub style? I'm thinking the nose wheel style has spokes on both sides
where the brake hub style is solid on one side?
Wing main spar - May have to make my own. Tried several times thru topflight replacement dept both times warped beyond use
Thinks for the help!
Oh yea welcome to the new Corsair Brothers.....

Hi Mike,
I used Robart 4.5" aluminum spoked wheels (nose wheel style), I don't think 5" will fit...but I could be wrong.
Zeeb,
I tried disabling the servo by diconnecting positve and it works, however it causes both servos to jitter for a second when the power is restored on gear down. Grounding the signal does not have any jitter when the signal is restored but I am now curious about how much current drain grounding the signal will produce.
Does anyone have any experience with grounding the signal and what if any adverse affects it can have?

This morning I had to break some ice out of my shop door lock. We also had a little ice on the back deck. Man it's cold here too.[&:] it was 30 below sixty degrees this morning.
Hey Chris, NC is the fly-in hot spot. We have a large group of guys (a few from each club) that go to each others fly-ins. About 25 guys and a few gals. These guys are more of my "regular" flying buddies than my club members were. We are known in the area as the "Curcus"
BTW, I only fly at fly-ins. So I have to hit the fly-ins pretty hard when we have them. We lost our club several years ago (2 miles from my house). Now the closest field is 40 miles. Not something I can run to every weekend.
Later guys,
Kelly

Hi mike
I also used the 4.5 robart. If you cant get a good main spar its not hard to trace one off the plans and cut it out.
8 spoke nose type . For the rear a sullivan 2 inch solid aluminum
will post pics soon on tailwheel install

Mike, you've got a few options on wheels for this thing. If you're into aluminum hubs, obviously Robart as mentioned, but you can also check with Darrell at Sierra (I think he's got the same wheels that Aerotech used to sell which were 4 7/8" and a bit less $ than the Robarts). You can also check out Vailly, as these are also much less than the Robarts, yet still look nice. 5" wheels will require mods. 4 7/8" was pouring them in but they fit on mine. If I hadn't have gotten the Aerotechs, I would have went with Vailly I think.

Been back on the Luftwaffe birds mostly Bob, finished the Platt 109 and finishing a 190D and 190A. Busy with school, but finding a little time here and there to get a little dose of detailing now and then. I'll have to get to balancing the Corsair before spring.
I suppose this is time for the Toledo call for the Corsair brethren here....who might be attending this year?
Polluting the thread with pics of other stuff I suppose.....

Hi guys,
Well that's it, installed the Thermacowl sensor and finished up the electrics. Cockpit kit and paint left! Hoping to run up the engine if it isn't too cold this weekend.
Still wondering about grounding the signal on a servo instead of breaking positive to disable it. Any thoughts?
Santa's Extreme Flight Yak showed up today....three big boxes!!

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Cdohaney instead of grounding out the signal wire why not just have a micro switch to cut the signal wire grounding out wires just don't make me feel very safe. Cause if you are grounding out something then the power has to go somewhere. And that could cause a major drain on your batteries.[X(] Also causing a possible reciever malfuntion.[X(] Am I missing something here cause the only thing that I will ground out is possibly my ignition to kill it.

Thanks nChrome,
Thats what I'm gonna do. I was trying to do it in a way that didn't jitter the servos. Cutting the ground killed both servos, switching the red caused both servos to jitter when
power was restored and switching the signal jitters the tailwheel servo....not a big deal compared to jittering the rudder as well...and I'm not grounding out anything.

I will be heading to Toledo again this year with at least four other members of our club here in Menomonee Falls WI. We'll be cruisin' through the Chi town on Thursday afternoon.

Cool. 2 buddies and myself are leaving on Thursday as well. I think we're staying right in the Seagate this year, which probably means a bit of a bar tab there on Thursday night I'm sure. Might be nice to set up an informal hookup for some chilly beverages and put some names to some faces here.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
I need some suggestions for a pilot for my TF GS Corsair. I'm going to use the TF cockpit kit. I used the 1/7 scale pilot bust on my H9 Corsair and like it but do you think the 1/5 one could work on this plane? Thanks

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
The TFGS is closer to 1/6 scale than 1/5th, so either an "Officer and Gentlemen" pilot from Vailly Aviation would work, or one of the action figures like Blue Box Toys or Elite Force would work, although they are getting harder to find.

Roger, you can use a BBI Dragon figure (check ebay) or an In The Past Toys figure also. I used a Wheeler field G.I. Joe and hacked about an inch or so off his legs so that he's more like "Dorf Pilot". To fit a regular 1/6 figure in there, you'll have to do some leg surgery though. The cockpit is too short. Other than this, the fit is good.

This is the pilot I used. Very detailed down to the mic plug in the helmet and a clip for his handgun.
