RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Hi Gary,
Started a new position at my College here. I moved from an instructional position in Media Arts (multimedia production) to Campus Administrator, or as my peers say "I've moved to the dark side") and switching mid semester makes for a steep learning curve. Enjoying the challenges though, so I haven't had much time to dedicate to my real passion. Having said that though, I have not run up the engine. Actually, I was concerned about the weight of my wing after painting with regard to the servos being able to handle the fold. (They were borderline, although working good, when it was ready for paint). I was using HS815bb's rated for 433 oz @6v but overdriving them with 9.6 volts. I started looking around and found the [link=http://www.robotshop.ca/gws-heavy-duty-s777-6bb-servo-motor-2.html]GWS Heavy Duty S777 6BB Servo[/link] rated at 582 oz @ 6v and decided to switch them out. They almost fit perfectly in the 815 positions but I decided to beef up the mounting with some aircraft grade aluminum (I'll post some pics when done). Cut into the wing and am midway to changing them out (waiting for a couple of servo stretchers to get 180 degree rotation). Man, those servos flip the wing effortlessly!. As soon as the stretchers arrive I'll finish the install and reprogram the OSA Wingman and patch up the wing then ready for paint (finally). Figured the investement was worth it then take the chance of painting out the wing and then having the 815's stressed. Expecting the stretchers this week and hopefully then production will go ahead again full bore and run up the engine too.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Leonard, Depends on the version you'll do, but on most military versions the wells would have been Zinc Chromate green which, you'll find, has some different variations depending on brand used, etc.. Modelmaster is a good start, but Krylon also makes a spray can in, which I think is Hunter Green or Forest Green, which is about a duplicate of it, and is thus a heck of a lot easier to cover something like a wheel well with. I'll check for you on the can I have and will confirm the color for you.

Are you putting the number on the side of the plane? My corsair is being built by my friend Rick. I picked the plane up already 3/4 built. Rick has the gear doors finished, And man they look great. He's doing a great job. I know I'm not building but I do have one. If you would like to add me to the list I will put the number on the plane.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Hi guys,
Not much progress lately. Found some extremely heavy duty servos rated 586 oz/in @ 6v and decided to change out the 433 oz/in hs815bbs that I was driving at 9.6 v. They fold the wing effortlessly with lots to spare....definitely worth changing out. Waiting on a couple of servo stretchers to complete the install...hope to have them before the weekend.
While waiting, completed the access panels for the switches and refueling with some rare earth magnets, awesome holding power! Really looking forward to starting paint and finish, hopefully next week after I patch up the wings.
Welcome aboard to everyone new!!!

Hi All
Got a question and it is way off topic, as a winter project I have been building a new 1/4 scale Cub fuss got it altogether and having a time with the covering at the fin and top of the fuss, can't seam to get enough shrink to get the rinkles out,(see pic's) I an just matching material that was on wings, rudder and elavator's "Century 21 fabric" Trying to avoid strips do to the seams, so any help is welcome

Bob
Hard to tell from the pictures, but if it were me I would apply Balsarite to the lower framework and then attach the covering with low heat, to both sides. I think that if you try to shrink the wrinkles out with only one side covered, it will twist. So maybe try covering the whole thing, and only use high heat on the edges to really lock them in. When you shrink, use the lowest heat possible and stay away from the edges and any joints with the hot iron.
Hope that helps.
