I bought both for my Corsair, at the recommendation of GaryM. They are very nice. I'll look to see if I have any pictures.

This bird is a fairly easy build, but lots of attention must be payed to keeping it lite, your DA will handle it great up to about 33 lbs, but I believe one can be buld glassed and painted at or about 23 and still maintane the stringth you need.
I have no exp with solo put a 24''heel seams a bit big, my G-62 run sweet on 22X8-2 or 22X6/10-2 blades have not tried a 3 blade as yet.

Our flying season is over for this year weather is in the dumper, and what good days there are don't seam to match the days off.

Hope this helps and good luck with your build and post pic's

Cheers Bob T

Bob,

Is the 23# weight a typo? I didn't think we had any in the Brotherhood fleet less than 28#?

Far be it from me to question my elders tho

D[8D]

There was an F-2G that was 24 pounds. I believe it was David Grantham or something like that

Hi all,

I have not posted in quite a while due to a job change, and associated move from Georgia to Pennsylvania. I'm starting to understand why you guys up north build so much in the winter. Brrr.

Regarding light corsairs. I believe that saving weight in the tail is the most important area. An ounce there is several saved on the nose. Some of the wood I replaced was 4 times the weight of the new piece. These corsairs have very strong structure. Resist the temptation to beef them up. They don't need it. Mine weighs 24.5 lb. dry. Flies great. I have a ZDZ 80 that might replace the Area 51 for some larger loops, although it is plenty fast already.

My F2G1 pics start on page 238 post 5939.

It continues to be a pleasure to follow this thread. You guys do some really nice work.

David

Here are a couple of shots of the oil coolers and cowl. I cranked up the contrast on the cowl to show the detail. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the images guys thats a nice looking cowel and something that I think I will get. Thinking now if I should use the DA50 or a Magnum 5cyl radial. I'm guessing they are both similar in power but i get themore scale sound with the magnum tho the slime is a little scary

Devens

About the 23 lbs over the last year or so I have been kinda keeping track of wieghts, and having a chance to see how some of the arf's are built. I think with some planning and dilligence (spelling) with carefull cutting away alot of mtl the wieght could be made, as I still have a kit I may just give it a go.

will keep youall posted

I like what you have done with the cowel Bob. I'm still reading this monster thread up to page 30. Firgure ill read all 267 pages once then use index.....lol. Anyways are you able to give me the inside dimensions of the cowel, i.e where the motor mounts. I am serioulsy considering getting a radial now and its right on about 8"5/8 in diameter. Hoping I can fit this in a FGS cowel without the need to cut. Cheers again and thanks for the info, now to hunt down some ref books.

Also the motor im considering weighs 6.17lb. Do you think this is too heavy for this plane??

Thanks for ALL the help guys

Don't know a thing about the radial so NO comment the da would be a great engine, but the key to your project is KEEP IT LITE, I hate preaching so will go find my dinner dish and take a nap

Hi Bob. Yep the DA would be great, its reliable and it wont leave a mess. Downside it sounds shocking, i would imagine moreso in a warbird. The radial would sound scale, but weight and mess arnt on its side. Plus I dont know at this stage if it would fit in the cowel.

Jarrah, I wouldn't recommend the radial. Even though they may be the close in CCs the radial isn't powerfull enough for this plane.

Hey David, If you need some pix of the ZDZ-80 installed just let me know and I'll repost a few. Also you will need a custom muffler as neither of my pitts mufflers would work (to much drop) so I had Al at J-tec make me one. It's still a pitts muffler. It just has no drop in it and just does clear the fins of the back of the cylinder. It was standard price (for a pitts muffler)

Hey Kelly,

I'm not anywhere near building mine but still have a few parts to collect. I've got a Pitts type muffler for the ZDZ-80 that's going in mine but never considered the problem you mention.

I'd appreciate pics of your muffler.....

Thanks!

Zeeb, I was wrong on the clearance behind the cylinder, It's about 3/4 inch. I do have this muffler drawn out to scale on graft paper if you need it.
Sorry I don't have any pix with out the baffles in place.

Nice work Kelly.... [sm=thumbup.gif]

I've never dealt with J-Tec but I see stuff posted from guys all the time about them being great to work with and having a good product. I'm guessing the scale drawing would be needed to send to those guys?

You can send it to me at;

[email protected]

I really appreciate the heads up and the offer.....

Okay I will hold off on a radial until im in the moki ballpark. This will work out easier, cleaner, cheaper and more reliable than the glow radial. Just needed someone else to make up my mind for me! I will see if I can get the DA pitts muffrler modded so that it exits the cowel in a more appealing location, maybe try to replicate the 3 pipes seen on the full scale.

Getting the bird on Friday wooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Kelly,
VERY nicely done!
I like the way you ducted the air over the cylinder and out the bottom.
I also like the location of the batteries immediately behind the dummy radial the balance has to be nice.
Practical, clean and easy to maintain.

Can you show us more detail of your access hatch?

Nice Thunderbolt.

Isn't anyone making sliding canopies on their TF GS Corsairs anymore? Right now I have Winter Build Season prices. Save money.
