Hi Nick,
Here's a few pics. She's still a hangar queen, was going to maiden her last fall but ran into trouble with my tailwheel. By the time I got the replacement part and got her fixed it was too cold. First thing the spring shes good to go! Finished weight is 31 pounds and she taxis great and the fold setup works fine. Hopefully her maiden will not be her last!!!! Will be posting video either way.

Wow chris, lovely looking bird !! if i get anywhere near that i will be happy, your canopy looks good too, i am on that at the moment, just done a dummy run of the fiberglass frame which i think is okay but maybe a bit thin? not sure as to how thick to go on it to be honest.
Cheers Don i will contact them for help i know Sam, he has helped me before.
Here are some pics of the trial run canopy frame, any coments welcomed

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Nick, If I am remembering correctly this is what my lay up consisted of:
Brushed on a thickened up coat of resin to hellp round out the corners
One layer of 3/4 oz to get in tight on the corners and eliminate air bubbles
three layers of 3.5 cloth These are put down with just enough resin to wet them out and fill the weave, no excess or pooling on top of the cloth.
finished off with one more layer of 3/4 so as to have less weave to deal with when finishing out.
Hope this helps, Your part looks great

I used 6 layers of 48g per sq/mt not too sure what thickness that is,i think it is 1.2 oz? if so i had a total off 7,2oz which is some way short of yours so yeah as i thought too thin back to the drawing board
thanks Gary

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Hi all Corsair fans,
Let me join you and thank you to this discussion! I read it almost year now and here is a result:
Weigth: 26,5 lb
Engine: MVVS 50 ( in US you probably know as EVOLUTION 50)
Prop. 3bl 21x12 (now is already black)
Pilot is still under construction :-)
Thanks to yours experiences and advices I built my bird last year and it flies really GREAT!!! Especially experience with landing was so valuable to me, now I can land confidently. I started with "jumping" too.
Here is a video from last flights (Nov 09). Unfortunatelly it is split to 3 parts

I can not wait to new flying season, there is 1m of snow still here
Greetings from Prague to all!
Radek

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Thanks for your comments guys!
She is really very stable in the air now. Actually, after first flights I made some correction on the rudder. There was to much play and she did not fly straight - moved by tail like a fish. So I put piece of plywood more to the torque rod (in the stab) to make a space smaller.
My son (age 4) already has started to fly with some easy small planes and daughter (10 month) likes those my"toys" too. So we will see.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Welcome to the brotherhood Radek, congrats on a lovely looking and flying plane, cockpit looks great too.
Question : i see in the instructions that the fuel tank is mounted as forward as possible in the fuselarge, any particular reason why? i would have thought that mounting it as near as possible to the CG woud be more ideal and better for a more stable plane as the added wheight of the full tank would unbalence the plane ? or am i missing something?

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Thanks Nick!
I agree with you, fuel tank as near as possible to CG is ideal, I think.
Anyway, in case of Corsair, the main wheels moving back and forward when retracting cause bigger unballance than fuel. So with wheels down and aproaching to land is still necessary to pull up the elevator because the nose is heavier then in flight with whells retracted.
I have reccomended fuel tank 32oz and use the fuel as weight. I use only half for 1 flight. And still I had to add 0,5kg (ca1,1lb) weight to the nose.
And, there is not so much space in the fuselage for moving tank anywhere. That is my experience.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Yes i did think of this, i have 32oz fuel tank too,i was thinking of moving it as far back as possible ( about "2 3/4 ) ie : up against the servo mounting plate but i guess Top Flight know what they are doing by mounting the fuel tank there, you have a very light plane too, well done, most peoples planes are around 30lb
Has anyone else got any views on this?

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
The tank was most likely placed there for big glow engines. Remember, this is an old kit. Gas engines where a little more limited back in those days.
I used two 16oz tanks stacked on top of each other to save space foward and backwards in the fuse. They were placed on the CG.
However I did not mount the air tank in the fuse. I used two of the smaller tanks from Robart and placed them in the wing center section. Moving the air tank frees up a lot of room in the fuse.
I can get pics if you need them.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Kelly,
That sounds like a nice set up there, any pics you have of what you have done would be really appreciated, how did you join the two 16oz fuel tanks to behave as one? and did you free up the space where the air tank should be to place the fuel tanks there? pictures of what you did and why would be great.
many thanks
