Is it possible after top and bottom skinning the TF F4U wings to add washout? Or can it only be done before the top skin is applied.

Flybyme
From my experiance with this kit you can only get it befor or during skinning, That being said as I recall if you build with the tabs and per the instructions, you will get the correct washout.

Hey Joe
If you allready have the engine I would say use it but break it in realy good like 2 gal's minimun and run it throu all RPM's of cores you know all this.
Then as you build think LITE on every thing aft of the C/G, I know this is a big thread but back in the first post there is an index that can help you find some good ideas.
My birds wieght is 30 + with a G-62 on a Zonger/pro 22 x 8 and turning 6,800 to 7,100 but only about 3 gal's thru it, but the last coupla of outing it has been staying on the hi end, and it flys vary good.
Cheers Bob T

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
I believe its possible to shave a lot of weight off the plane. It may be some effort, but using only top grade contest balsa would be a great start. This might mean canning a lot of the kit parts. Selecting sheeting for wings, I often weigh each piece of balsa before making the sheets up. It's not uncommon to find one piece of 3/32x3x36 piece at 14 grams and another at 24 grams. Add that up across all the ribs and sheeting over a whole plane, and it's a huge difference. Not saying that the kits wood is bad, but rare indeed is the kit that gives me the same wood I would select for all of the sheets and ribs. This might mean cutting many new parts, like ribs, etc, but I am betting that if one used the best wood available that the plane would be well served by it. Most of the parts in my kit were heavier than they needed to be. Drilling a liberal amount of holes everywhere would help, but stuff like the core sheets on the control surfaces were balsa like stone on mine. I would be a lot more picky about it if my power selection weren't above the kits rec. range.

Thanks guys, all your opinions make sense and I appriciate the help. As of right now I'm not sure I'm going to use this engine as I could use the weight of a bigger ,heavier engine instead of adding more weight to the nose. I'm kinda leaning towards the Brison 4.2 or the Zenoah G-62. I'll let you know in a few days, as I have to talk to my friend about exchanging the engine.

Hi guys,
Been a while since I posted but haven't maidened yet. Ran up the engine getting ready for the maiden...everything working great, and then one of the joints failed on the exhaust...easy fix, regular solder instead of brazing (Doh!!!). However, I have been waiting on some 1/2 inch neporene tubing I had to cut to remove the exhaust to fix it for over six weeks! I will definitely get her in the air before end of this month and bad or good will be posting all the details. Great to see so many new builders, this is an awesome kit!!!!

Don't hurry. I was unfortunate enough to be flying with a gentleman at the Warbirds over the Midwest meet last week. He was flying his Comp ARF Corsair w/hydraulic folding wings powered by a Moki 250 4 stroke 5 cylinder radial gasser.
He took off, flew 3 circuits of the field and then his wing folded and it spiraled into the corn. The plane was a total write-off. The engine was completely destroyed. We guestimated >$12,000 USD in parts alone.
What caused it? He did not check to see if the wing was locked before take-off.
I have pictures.

Ok, Ok, . . . here's a few of the AFTER pictures:
Note the Spar with the right wing unlocked.
The Moki 250 had 3 out of the 5 cylinders ripped from the crankcase.
It's enough to make a man cry . . .
I'll look for a before shot so you can appreciate the beauty of this bird.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Here is a before picture of my COmp Arf Corsair prior to the crash in Wisconsin two weeks ago. Folding wing, 10 landing gear doors, six flaps, sliding canopy, smoke, two bomb drops, full light package, Klass Kote paint, Futaba 14 MZ with several chanel expanders. giving a total or 19 channels. Was a fantastic flyer. I saw flutter on the left aileron right before the wing folded.
It was on the 32nd flight. Flew like a big trainer with thick wing and all the dihedral. Moki 250, Sierra Precision retracts.
I have built so many corsairs since 1976 when I built my first Royal kit I have lost count. THe .60 size Royal had a Kraft radio, Kraft .60 engine, and Rhom-Air retracts. weighed 12 pounds.
