Default Topflite G.S. P51 Kit , DA50 or G62 ?

I'm considering these two engines for this bird , I know they're vastly different. Aside from cosmetics ( DA would win in the nose) which to choose?
1. Which one is more powerful with the same given prop?
2. Can a da50 hold up running wide open or almost full throttle . I know the g62 can handle high speed operation in this bird and endure a long life. Not so sure about the DA. (and I'm talking about a da thats had the updated conrod)
3.Considering the weight diff between these two, if I chose the lighter DA would I have to add a bunch of nose weight back on, there by negating the benefit of the lighter engine?
(BTW, This plane is kit built, glassed, with retracts)
Thanks for any input, Jay

I have that plane and it has a G-45 for power. I think either engine you listed would work just fine. The DA 50 is a good engine as is the G- 62. The G-62 powered plane is pretty fast IMHO if that's any help.

Thanks Bob, I know I cant go wrong with g62 pwr on this plane , it'll haul *****, and hold up well to the beating. Just querious how the DA would do in this application i.e. hard running. I know the DA is an awsome 3d/aerobatic motor, but there your not generally at sustained high throttle useage for the major part of a flight.

Jay, My mustang has a G-62 with a APC AT-6 prop. Very fast!

I don't own a DA 50 but I did work in the Small engine industry for 10 years. Most 2 cycle gas engines are pretty durable. Some are more so than others but since there are so few parts to wear out they hold up very well for the long haul.

Thanks Bob H,

Hey Kelly I was present during your most spectacular recent warbird air-race and agree that the g62 combo works well, but I have a chance to pick up a da50 with pitts style muff for about $425 used. And I'm just considering that possible option.
Now I sure you've run across some p51 competition with the da 50 , How did it measure up against yours?

BTW, that was one heck of a race and I think you were giving Dane Edwards a run for the money, Too bad about the midair, that p47 looked like it was in a ginzo knife commercial!( APC props pretty sharp)

Also did you start on your replacement?

Yes Jay my new stang will be here wednesday. (RTC)

I never really got a chance to fly against anything else. That was the most unlucky plane I have ever owned. Though it was my first warbird, retracts, fiberglassing, and paint I learned alot from it. Expecially that warbirds are different than SA planes. Hopefully my next P-51 will have better luck. Now that I know a little more about what's going on with them.

It's not really all engine, I saw a P-51 in florida with a G 38 turn it on with a APC prop. I don't remmember which prop, but it was moving too. The Mustang is a sleek bird, and I think with the DA 50 and some prop experamenting and it will be fast.
Try an 18x14 zinger first to see what it will turn it. I know Dane's G-62 turns 7300 with that prop. My G-62 turns a AT-6 prop at 7500. Although the AT-6 prop has no numbers on it, I was told by APC that it worked out to be around 20x14.

I will be doing a different scheme this time, so I can fly at a Warbird meet.

Out with the old and in with the NEW!!
Bye Bye Strega, it was fun while it lasted

Thanks for the info Kelly, My stang is framed up , still a long way off. But this motor deal presented itself so I figured I'd a little research. Good luck with your new one , Jay

Jay, On my next Mustang I will be scaling it out a little more than the last. I'm getting Keleo Creations to build a scale exhast for mine. He hasn't built one for a g-62 yet, so I will have to send him my engine. He said that he could not get the whole muffler to fit in the cowl at the head, but that's alright because there's a carb sticking out the other side anyways. I think with a little matching paint it will look fine.
Also I was wanting to put a cockpit from Dynamic Balsa in it. They have one that drops in with little modification.
I would also like to try some scale gear doors. I will have to get up with Rick on them. He did a beautiful job on his Corsair doors.
I see this as practice for a bigger project someday. Maybe a Ziroli Mustang?

Kelly I'm sure it'll look great as Drake Edwards has demonstated with alittle matching paint on the exhaust/engine. Looks great in the air!
And we're not competing in TopGun anytime soon. Maybe down the road .
I love my giant extra , but everybody needs a warbird, different animal ,different kinda flying. Gotta love it.

MY T.F.GIANT P-51 IS A ROCKET IN THE AIR WITH A G-62, 22-10 ZINGER PROP, AMSOIL, AND 110 OCTANE RACING GAS IN THE TANK. THE PLANE ALSO BALANCED PERFECTLY WITH A 2200MAH BATTERY LOCATED ON THE REAR WING BOLT ASSEMBLY. HAD TO SLIGHTLY TRIM BACK THE 5 BOTTOM RIGHT COOLING FINS(FORWARD LOOKING AFT) FOR A CUSTOM FIT. PERFECT MATCH FOR THR TF P-51.

The way to go is a 3W-75
more power and it weighs the same as a g-62

or if you really want your mustang to cause people to crap thier pants then get a [link=http://www.chiefaircraft.com/cgi-bin/rcm/hazel.cgi?action=serve&item=/Models/Engines/ZDZ/ZDZ.html]ZDZ 80 RV[/link] [X(]
Wieghs the same as a Zenoah G-62

Yes Disco the ultimate " Crap their Pants " package would be the zdz80 , as I did consider that option. But my thining wallet is calling the shots now and I decided to go with the DA50 with a pitts muff, for $420 ! Couldnt pass on that deal as a buddy of mine owned it and it saw very light duty.

Vkerster, I know that G62 combo works really well, and that probably would have been my pic if the DA deal had'nt shown up.

Thanks all . Jay

Has anyone put a ZDZ 80 in the TF 1/5 P-51? I have a ZDZ 80 in my TF P-47 and it barely fit. Im building a TF P-51B and was thinking a ZDZ 50. The ZDZ 40 fits fine but alittle short on power IMO. Comments please....

I actually throttle back ( 3/4 )on my G45 to fly more scale like at 24 lbs. I really can't see why you would need anything more in the nose. Most who have seen my plane fly think it's a 62. Larger engines just add vibration and stress to the airframe and the Zenoah is simple to install and dependable, cheap too.

Hey Kirkrc, I think the zdz 80 option would require some major nose hackage, some don't mind that and no doubt someones done it. I originally bought the original zdz50 (non new generation) and resold it as they were not power houses. The new gen zdz50 should do ok and will fit just fine. Think I would pass on the zdz40 option though.

I just bought a GS (TF) stang from a guy and its got a G-62 in it. and I was wondering if the plane weighs to much at close to 21lbs (so he says) for a G-62? and I was also wondering if i can use Avgas 100LL in a G-62? for added power?

Yes the RAF had P-51D's. They called them Mustang IV's.

Hey Warbird , 21lbs is not too heavy at all, I think it would be considered rather lite depending on the finish, (glass or monicote ) .
And I would bet that over the long haul you'll be happyer with the g62 option over the moki i.e. fuel cost , performance , cooling issues, starting, idleing etc.
