What did you have to do in order to fit that under the hood?

I cut 1" off the engine box. Reinforced it with aluminum angle. That's about it.

For the muffler, I used a Bisson muffler...not a pitts-style but the regular.

Did it fly with a 4 bladed prop? Did the carb stick out the side of the cowl?

Yes! it does fly with the 4 blade. No the carb doesn't slick out.
The whole in the cowl was from a previous engine application.

I tried a 20x10x4 Beila on my G-62 but couldn't get more than 5,700 on the ground. The plane flew very sluggish. With the G-62, if I prop it to turn about 7,000 on the ground, it unloads in the air and really goes well. 5,700 doesn't allow it to unload enough to get on the step.

The one and only time we tacted it on the ground we got 6300 rpms. The fastest mph we got on a radar gun was 79mph. It is fully acrobatic. The g62 was used and well broken in. The plane weights 17 pounds. It flys great!

My G-62 has about 2 gallons thru it, maybe 3. The extra 600 rpm you are getting on the ground may be just enough for it to unload in the air. It sure looks good with that 4 blade prop in any case.

Thanks for the reply.

What tires do you guys use on this plane? I have 3.5 inch Robarts but they seam to be a bit soft for the weight of this plane. Would like to stay with the 3.5 inch for now.

Ditto. The stock wheels have worked well in mine for over 7 years.

Robart will sell you foam inserts to go in your tires to stiffen them up. Or you can go down to Home Depot and get some small diameter foam pipe insulation and do the same thing much cheaper.

Backer rod works well too. It is a foam rod that comes in several diameters and is used to stuff in control and expansion joints before they are caulked. It gives a backing or bottom so that you do not have to use so much caulk to fill the joint.

I used the Top Flight Giant Scale Corsair ARF wheels on mine. They are 4.5" in diameter. It took a bit of grinding and of course the removal of the stock wheel well, but it looks much better and taxis FAR better on our grass field.

The P-47 just doesn't look right with the small wheels. I used Dubro 4.5" wheels and Robart retracts for a more scale appearance and better reliability. You can see how I modified the wheel wells and made new gear doors in posts #3193 and 3243.

Here's a video of mine flying that was taken a couple years ago.

I modified my wheel wells and went with 5" wheels. Actual scale would have been 5.25. I had to remove a lot of structure, and move it make the wheels fit and beef up structure around the new wheels.

chris923,

Did your modifications affect the main spar structure?

The stock wheels are discontinued (HAN308W). They have a 3.5 inch wheels for the P-51 blue nose. I'll also look into the foam inserts that Chad mentioned. Not going to do the mod for the bigger wheels yet but maybe down the road.

Does anyone have the bombs and/or the scale fuel tank they would like to sell? My plane did not come with them. [h=4][/h]

No, I didn't have to touch the spar, if the spar was a problem I would have went with smaller wheels. I had a incident on it's 3rd flight with a tank issue. I engine quit and I had to do a wheel up landing in a unforgiving area. Just be for landed, I caught one wing one a mound of dirt. The plane tumbled. The only damage I had was, a broken ( snapped in half) wing tube and the wing that hit the dirt pile detached braking the wing bulk head on one side. It I had weakened the wing in the wheel well area, the wing would have snap there. As a result, plane was fixed easily.

I have a complete, unassembled hanger 9 P47 150 kit that I bought some years ago. I also have a pair of the Shinden Machine replacement struts for the stock retracts, a very nice machined aluminum spinner of unknown origin and (2) new in package JR retract servos. Of course all the original kit accessories are there including the C/L fuel tank and bombs, engine details, etc. The original kit box is gone but everything is there otherwise. The covered parts show some wrinkles from sitting around over the years but it has always been stored inside in air conditioning so there is no damage from excess heat or cold.

I just have too many projects and don't see myself getting to this one. I would consider parting it out or selling as a package. Please PM if interested in all or part of this kit. This will also appear in the classified section but I thought I'd post here also to see if there was much interest.
