Stick any engine in it that you want.............
It will fly with just about anything......The way it sounds.....

It seems that the large 4 strokes shake things loose..... But the more you think about it, the saito gas would be a smoother running engine
than it's GLow brother due to the ignition timing.....Now, I am not saying stick that one in this plane..
The only thing that would be holding me back on that one is the Price of the engine, and that extra weight that engine would put on this
airframe....... It would make it quite heavy....

Mine came out 13.5 lbs, no weight needed in the nose . apart from the above changes I installed a "Y" connector inside the wing so I only have one extension from wing to fuse for the ailerons. I also sprayed an automotive "Satin" coat to get rid of that plastic monocote look.

Hey Justin,
Do you have any pictures of your evo 26gt install. I am in the process of assembling my hawk and have the 26gt, Kelvin's scale exhaust and someplace in the Canada Post system a 3 blade solo prop. I'd like to see how you did your install before I get that far down the road.

You're going to love the sound of your four stroke with the Keleo exhaust. I have mine on an OS 120 III w/pump and you'd swear it sounds like a multi-cylinder engine.

Incidentally I talked to Kelvin at Keleo Creations a couple of days ago and he said that he's planning to discontinue making the P-6E exhaust soon so anyone thinking about ordering one had better get the order placed. I'm glad I got mine

It looks like you improved upon Wile E's tail wheel design. How did you make yours? Do you have any construction photos? can you describe the work. I am assembling my Hawk now and would like to scale out the tail wheel.

So I got the saito 180 and the keleo pipes running today and all I can say is yaaa hoooo that sounds so nice.. I will have a maiden as soon as I get the final button up on the cowl and some good weather

You are going to love the Saito 180 in your Hawk!
Word of advice use Locktite! My Saito 180 and 220 remove screws in minutes of run time!
You may want to use a Metal/rubber washer on your cowl screws.(My Aeroworks Yak came with them)

Thanks for the advice. I have already used lock tite on the engine mounts and should be ok. As for the cowl I was thing of using some thread inserts and locktite on them as well.

Just read a post here that their P-6 came out at 13.5 pounds. I did mine pretty stock except the engine which is a G-38, mine came out at 18 lbs with no balance weight added. It baanced perfectly at the recommended CG with that engine. Wondering if my scale is off? Any others care to post the weights of their P-6s?

Hello All,

First off, I'm not an ARF guy but I wanted a new toy and I didn't want to have to spend months and months to have it. After reading through this thread I decided to get a Hawk of my own. I have to confess that I like it.............a lot! There is much to appreciate in this offering from Great Planes and they did a fantastic job of putting the kit together but I did run across something and wanted to ask if any of you found the same thing.

The blind nuts in the wings became a problem on my plane. Three of the eight of them stripped out even before the lock washer flattened out. If I had to guess, I'd say that the wrong size nut had been used but I doubt it. Chances are the nuts are just of poor quality. As these are buried in the wings, I couldn't access them without tearing the covering off and I didn't want to do that. What I did do was to apply JB Weld into the nut and on the capscrew for a permanent assembly. I'm now concerned for the rest of them even though they did tighten as they should have and I may apply JB Weld to each of them, as well.

Other than this, the plane went together well though I exceeded the 15 - 20 hour assembly time by well over ten hours and I didn't deviate from the instructions once except to use Robart wheels/tires instead of the supplied tires. With the OS 1.20 Surpass II, it flies just like my old Dave Platt Bucker Jungmeister which is a good thing though I could wish for a bit more power in the vertical. The one other good thing is that I have the only Hawk in our club so it is still "unique" despite being an ARF.

My Hawk has 10 flights on it so far running a Zenoah G26. Balanced perfect and flys beautiful using a 17X8 APC prop. To this day, I cant understand why Great Planes dropped this Hawk. Big mistake I think. I should have bought two of them when they were on sale at the end.

Wow! Tower isnt really advertising the Great Planes Hawk like they did when I bought mine for $299. I clicked on Great Planes and I didnt see at at all. But when I did a search for the P6E Hawk it came up in limited supplies. Sorry guy's, my mistake.
I'm going to order another one with my money I got from George Bush. The Curtiss Hawk is a real beauty and it sure attarcts a big crowd at my club field.

PS: Per my previous post regarding the stripped blind nuts in the wings, I did JB Weld all of the screws in place as I had one screw come out during a flight after having three others strip out before they were even snug. LIfe is much better now!

Well guys, it's official, The Great Planes Curtiss P6E Hawk is gone like I said. Just like the Great Planes Christen Eagle, Aero Master, and several other great planes. Good thing I bought a spare when the price dropped to $299.

Npw that the HAWK is OOP . You can do like I did on the Great Planes RYAN ST-A and the STA-M, I went to the parts and bought all the parts to assemble 5 of each plane put the kits together and sold complete kits at twice what I paid...

I think I may have bought the last P-6 at Tower. Got an E-mail from Tower on Sunday morning for $30.00 off any purchase of $199.99 or more. Went to Tower, ordered the P-6 used the $30.00 discount, got free shipping, all for $269.00 Then...went on Tower first thing Monday am and the P-6 was listed as "discontinued". I picked up a P-6, NIB at the Perry swap meet in April and just love the way it flies. I probably wouldn't have got one in the first place if it hadn't been for the "build thread" on the P-6, a wealth of info which saved me a lot of headaches. Sooo I Figured I'd better get another one soon. Glad I didn't wait any longer. I'm sorry to see the P-6 go away, like quite a few of the good planes that G.P. has had in the past. Oh well. Mike
