Default Paint schemes for Hellcats??

Looking to refinish my Byron Hellcat this winter. Anybody have sites or info on Hellcat paint schemes. I'm partial to the tri color but open to anything. If you can post pics, that would be helpful also.
Thanks,
Fred

Fred, you might want to grab at least a couple of books on the Hellcat, such as Squadron F6F Hellcat in Action and Hellcat Aces of WWII. Both of those books contain many color schemes to choose from.

Hey Todd,
I guess It's the 3 without the side windows. I could do the later also. This is for Warbird flyins and not for competition. I'll have to check out the bookstores. I thought I had a Hellcat in Action book, but must have sold it. Thanks to all for your input. Keep it coming.

Hi Todd,
I knew I could count on you for words of wisdom. LOL Maybe I will keep it like it is. It's a plane that you just fuel and fly. This thing is an awesome flyer even at 34 lbs. Has a G 62 and goes Faaaaaaaast!! Hey Todd I think I'm going to pick up one of Pat McCurry's new Yak fighters.
Later,
Fred

PS At least the "SOX" won the World Series again. LOL

Thanks Richard. I guess I will keep it as is for now, unless I get ambitious. I did a Corsair in this scheme years ago. I think the underside was white and it had an arrow on the right wing also. It was number 167. Do you know anything about that?

I don't remember seeing any Corsairs aboard the USS Bunker Hill painted in either the tri-color scheme or with white on the underside. I think all of them were painted in overall glossy sea blue like your Hellcat. Therefore, I'm afraid I don't know anything about #167 with white on the underside.

Have you checked out any of the RN Hellcats....with the two tone greyish green and greyish(sky) undersides...some had D-Day stripes. which look pretty neato....plus there are SEAC ones that look nice as well. Something different from the "normal" US Hellcat...?

Fred, what's the wingspan and overall weight of your Byron Hellcat? What's under the hood?

Hi Richard,
Span is 89 in. weighs 34 lbs. has a G 62 turning a Master Airscrew 22x10 wide blade wooden prop this is a great, reasonable prop for the G 62. Easily over 100 mph. Gas mixture 50-1.

That would be this one: modeled after Roger Hedrick's later mount (his earlier Corsair was tri-color, land-based Jolly Rogers squadron F4U-1A).

Yellow cowl ring was used for a brief period in Feb, 1945. Otherwise, scheme was same, and as Richard stated: no white underside was ever incorporated into these Bunker Hill based Corsairs. They were overall glossy sea blue, as the #135 Hellcat would be (from same ship/ time period).

This is really a moot point because they didn't see combat as part of the Bunker Hill complement. But, VF-17 was the original fighter squadron assigned to Bunker Hill. They were "plank holders" and even did the BH work up in the Caribean. They were flying F4U-1s, birdcage, and were done up in the tri-color. The national insignia was just a big star, no meat ball, at the time. VF-17 actually transitioned to the Pacific with BH via Panama canal. Once in Hawaii VF-17 was detached from BH and a Hellcat squadron was assigned. Some would say because the Corsair was not yet carrier qualified, but VF-17 was landing on BH, sometimes with interesting results, during Bunker Hill's initial workup. Another stated reasons is logistics, all the other carriers were carrying Hellcats and it made it easier to support BH. VF-17 was then assigned to land in Solomons, where Pappy and his crew had already been having fun with Corsairs and a logistics chain already existed.

So Bunker Hill did have tri-color Corsairs! Just very early.

And THOSE Corsairs did not have the 'arrow' emblems on them. Only the later, all glossy sea blue F4U-1Ds (& FG-1Ds, as well as F4U-4s) had the arrows one them, indicationg that they were operating from the Bunker Hill. The USN had started using symbols to denote which carrier the aircraft were based on, beginning in late 1944. By that time, the USN had also decreed that all carrier based combat aircraft should be finished in the overall glossy sea-blue scheme, which became the standard until after the Korean war.
