Refurb on my Airworld FW190.
Hi All,
I thought I might share this with you if any of you are interested.
I have bought a Airworld FW 190 second-hand and is in need of total refurbish.
Started off with getting all the paint off,this is a long job but well worth it,my luck was in as the paint came off with thinners,it took about a week of evenings,I can still smell it
I sent off for some new parts for her through Stuart Mckay and have just received them,the new parts were {Cowl,Canopy,Rudder,Egine mount}
I will be using all off the scale parts in the refurb that I will be selling through Tigermodels.
Power plant is one of MR Mckays Radials here is a link of us having a bench run.
http://media.Putfile.com/MCkay-radial
Here are some shots of the 190 with old paint and then back to the gel coat.
Cheers Graham.

Graham, If you don't mind asking...how much ws it? I had an AW 190 but sold it before building...way too many deviations from scale, and those rivets...could've built a battleship with them! I'm waiting for Stephan (SisT) to get to the 1:4 190 then I'll spend the big $$ again! The radial is a sweet motor when it's running right, but can be a b-atch, to get running right. But...I can tell you there is nothing like it...hearing that baby is music to my ears!
Kepp the pics coming...what scheme are you going to do her in?

Hi SJN,
yes the Airworld 190 is a great kit as is all there kits Just have a Look at there new winner {THE BAE Hawk}
Hi Rob,
Now that would be telling how much I got her forlet's say I got a good deal for her with the radial
The Mckay Radial is one great engine,all the mod's have been done and it's just good common sense to maintain the engine just the same as you were operating a turbine.{check,check and double check}
Regarding the 190 yes there are some areas that need a bit of attention to-wards scale,but hey I'm a modeler
There is also a bit of history about this 190,it was used in the new film the Drop.
I don't want to know about Stephan[:@]put it this way you might be waiting a while.
Scheme I have not decided on yet but do have short list about 10but I do like [RED 13 of Major Heinze Bar]
I have attached a pick of my friend Bernd's Airworld FW190.
Cheers Graham.

RE: Refurb on my Airworld FW190.
My next project is pretty much exactly the same as yours.
I have the RCS 215 radial already, but internet accounts I've read have me really worried about problems with overheating. The engine DOES FIT in the cowl.
I asked Mackay for advice, but he pretty much blew me off because I didn't buy the plane directly from him.
So I'll be following your project with great interest.
I've got to finish re-tooling the left engine mount on my Robart-38, then the AirWorld Fw will be next on the work bench.
If I chicken out on the radial and build a Stearman for it, what would be the best powerplant for the Fw? 3W150? Anything out there that size without e-ignition?

RE: Refurb on my Airworld FW190.
Hi Graham
I like the red 13 also I did a scheme like the black 10 to a meister 190 and it was hard to see on a cloudy day. I was going to put yellow on the cowl and fuse but didn't get around to it and I lost it in the air and she went in. So now I have a SisT 1/5 FW190a8 on order have you heard anything about them good or bad. I only ask this because your from the UK. Thanks

Hmmm...I always thought that was the point of the cammo in the first place ? If ya want pretty colored airplanes fly 3D !
Seriously though, Black 10 definitely would require a bit more focus to fly on a dull, overcast day. But, it is a cool scheme, and schemes of the type were more common than those like Red 13...but, they are both cool. That's the thing about modeling Luft birds, there is just so much to chose from scheme wise.
Oh no! BadLemon...you're not really asking Graham about SisT ! If you check back a few posts, he commented discretely what his opinion was. Now I know this goes back further...and I'm not trying to stir anything up again. I personally have nothing against either of them. From everything I have seen of the SisT 1:5 FW-190, it is truly an outstanding warbird kit in every sense of the word. I have sat for many a long hour pulling the hair from my already balding head, contemplating breaking down and getting the 1:5 scale...however, I have painstakingly decided to wait for the much anticipated release's of Stephan's FW-190 and a Bf-109 in 1:4 scale. Why you may ponder? BIGGER IS BETTER....also more expensive...but I look at it this way...it's less money that my wife can spend on shoes!
Cheers,
Rob / katchmarek

RE: Refurb on my Airworld FW190.
Hi All,
Thank you for your interest.
First of all I have nothing against MR SisT, OOPS I'm not aloud to use that word
Stephan,s kit is one of the best 190's I have seen but is a bit small for my liking but that is my own personal opinion,after all he is following in the footsteps of one of the best flying 190's{AIRWORLD}
Hi Kram-RCU,
Yes I was a bit worried about over heating,but I have a few idea's for cooling,plus I will be using a scale fan and spinner the one's that came with it are to small.
I was with Stuart Mckay at the weekend and he was more than helpful,plus he gave me quick look at his new Engine [400cc Radial,yeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaa].
Rob is right there is such a vast choice of schemes to choose from,here are some more picks to choose from and some more unusual ones that might suit you all in the US
I might take a while for new picks on the progress of the 190 as I'm also building a Fibber Classics P51 for a customer so bare with me.
Cheers Graham

Graham, STOP, you're killing me with the pics of that tank. I can't wait to see mine.. Have to say that I give the nod to either red 13 by a nose over blue 8 in the last attachment. Looks like I'm going to have to keep hording my hobby funds though. How on earth did you get the paint off without sanding?

Hi Mike,
Yes Doug is right I used thinners to get all that paint off,tried the under side first to see how it would react,it took a while but well worth it.
I have had to do the same thing to a Fiber Classics P51,I'm doing this for a customer,and he bought it second hand and requires finishing and painting.
The previous guy mucked up the tail and fin,he decided to put PVA rivets on her[X(] Don't ask me why,so I had to chip off all the blobs of PVA[X(] and then start stripping the 10mm of primer off[X(] and then hey presto back to the nice silver gel coat
Here are some pics of the tail and thinners "O" yes and my helper Mr BBI.
Cheers Graham

RE: Refurb on my Airworld FW190.
Hi All,
I hope you all had a good New Year.
Just a quick update on my Airworld 190.
I have had to beef up the new engine mount as it was a bit on the thin side,about 2 mm thick,I think it needs to be a bit stronger for the radial,so out with the carbon matting.
Next job was the cowl and nose,I have shortened the nose by just over 1 1/4 " to get it more or less in the scale position,and by doing this I have had to split the cowl and enlarge it by 1" so it could slide further back.I know by shortening the nose I will need more nose weight but I think I will have enough with the 9 1/2 pound radial.
Just by doing this she is starting look more like the Butcher-Bird rather than a Sukoi.
Next up was the spiller vents, I have repositioned them into the scale position,and put the right contour into the exhaust wall's.
I cant do much more on the cowl and nose until I get my scale cooling fan,this is being made for me in Switzerland and should be here soon.
I have posted some picks of the build and one of the scale prop,I could not wait I had to try it on the cowl to see what it was like.
Cheers Graham

RE: Refurb on my Airworld FW190.
I just "lucked" into your thread with the help of Steve Thomas, whose Airworld 190 I am refurbishing as "White 1". Total rebuild in the cockpit, wheel wells, etc.,etc.... I just pieced together the cooling fan last night and I'm scratch-building the static prop by laminating wood over a Master Airscrew 3-blade "crutch". What are you going to use for tires/wheels.....can I get any of the parts from your molds, and in general....anything you could offer to make my job easier. No sense in re-inventing the wheel!!!!!!
I live in Central florida and have direct access to White 1 since it is being restored to flying status just 10 miles away!!!!! That means I can take pictures galore!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Mike,
Your one lucky guy being next to the rebuild of White 1,you got to post up all your picks when you take them as there is a lot of 190 lovers on this forum.
All the parts on this build thread we are selling,send me your email and I will send you a list of parts and Prices .Have a look at my other thread {FW 190 SCALE PARTS}
I'm just waiting to get my Tigemodels website up dated by Jasonp51d,and we will have on there the full range of scale parts for the 190,109 in 1/4 and 1/5 scale and other parts for P51,P47.
We are selling the full scale cockpit in 1/4 fully painted and extras such as seat,control stick,rudder pedals,canopy winder and Revi,or you can by it in kit form.
Regarding the wheels,I'm just waiting on the new scale wheel from Stefan Petrausch just under 7"
Here are some pics of our static prop & spinner and some of the wheels.
Mike, remember thoughs pics

This stuff is just freekin incredible! I'm going to have to go back to work so I can afford this stuff though...but dang it, worth every penny. This is what I really love to see, guy's that just love this hobby, the history, the realism, the sweating out the details so much to give us the opportunity to own a peice of art. I do love this stuff!

Hi Rob,
Thanks for the great words,it's very much appreciated,every time we try to up date the site Bernd produces another great part,as dose Ralf from Scale Specials .I think all the parts are reasonably priced considering all the hard work and craftsmanship that goes into all these parts.
Back to the Airworld 190,I have been studying the scale drawings again and have decided to alter the canopy as it is to long and high,so back out with the Dremel
Cheers Graham
