Default P40 ZDZ option

Did you guys compare to any ZDZ engines? I was asking about a ZDZ in a Ziroli AT6 in another post....This might be a good thing to have people list their airplanes and new engine selections. bob

If it fits, put it in. You can always use the left stick!!!!

If your wanting to turn a large three blade prop get the 75i. Also the left stick will perform throttle management

Mine has a ZDZ80 in it and I use a mejlik 24-10 3-bladed prop.....

What can I say, it flys as a fighter warbird should....Fast, with power to spare....

I was able to fit the engine without ant holes in the cowl whatsover....

Warbird_1....

Is that a Ziroli? I had a G62 on one I owned previously, and have observed a few similarly powered at warbird meets and they seem a bit lethargic with a G62......

A 50cc would certainly be on the "fringe" for a Ziroli P40...

If yours is a Ziroli, can I ask what it weighs?

Mine weighs near 28lbs, maybe a little more as best I can weigh it.

BTW, I like the ZDZ80 (single) so much in this airplane, as well as the fit in the cowl, I bought anther to use on a Ziroli Mustang....

This engine is light weight, has similar dimensions to a 60cc equivalent, and has the added feature of a rear mounted carb, ideal for warbirds.

It's relatively easy to fit this engine in the cowling of some warbirds as there's no holes required for a side mounted carb....

Default P-40

branded, my p-40 weighted in at 26 lbs. i certainly couldn't do huge loops with mine but it did fly ok with the 50 in her. i always wished i had more power though, ron oh..... btw i looked at the zdz line. they look like a nice engine but i stayed away from them simply because of all the extra parts runnnig at high rpm's. i saw distant problems down the road. i believe ,the simpler the better. i went the the 3w line because they don't use chainsaw parts in a machined case . there cylinders are designed for model airplanes and with the reed valves, they made great torque ! i have a 3w-50i on my yellow spitfire and that flys at 109 with a 22x10 prop that prop is to small plus it's not even broken in yet , ron

BTW. IF YOU CHECK THE HP RATINGS BETWEEN THE G-62 AND THE QUADRA 50 , YOU WON'T SEE TO MUCH DIFFERENCE. I HAD A 20X10 ON MY 50 I THINK

I'm building a 1/5th scale Spitfire MkI (same size as Yellow) and am putting a 3W 50 into it turing a 3 blade 20 x 10 to slow it down during cruise and still preform good vertical...anticipate 28 to 30 pounds flying weight...what prop do you suppose you should be running on your Spit if the 22 x 10 is too small?

22X10 IS OK FOR BREAK-IN BUT YOU SHOULD JUMP TO A 22X12 OR LIKE A 24X8 MAYBE . THEY SAY TO USE LAWNBOY 2 CYCLE OIL FOR THE FIRST 4-5 GALS JUST TO BREAK IT IN FASTER THEN GO TO LIKE HONDA HP2 FULL SYN. OIL. I HOPE THIS HELPS. IF YOU HAVE ANY ??? GIVE CACTUS AVIATION A CALL. THEM FOLKS ARE REALLY NICE TO WORK WITH. I'M GOING FORWARD ON BUYING THE 3W-75i FROM THEM NEXT WEEK , RON

Well OK Warbird_1, but I have first hand experience with this engine and like I said, I'm so impressed with this engine and it's performance, I bought anther for the Mustang....

I'm busily installing a Zenoah GT80 w/CH in a Ziroli Corsair at this time. I had a Corsair with a Sachs 4.2 and it did well, but I always hated the huge hole in the cowl for the carb and muffler, not to mention the fact that the engine was offset off center to fit such that i could not use a dummy radial....

The point I suppose I'm trying to make is that there's alot more to selection of an engine for a Warbird than meets the eye....I find that the biggest "turn off" to a gasser in my selection process is whether or not the plugs stick straight out of the head, or not. I get real tired of trying to fit engines in tight cowls because of plugs that are installed 90 degrees to the top of the head.

The ZDZ Single I find makes a good fit in many such designs that would ordinarily be fitted with a G62, Q75, etc.

Default 3W 75i

Warbird 1, I'm also putting a 3W75i in a Ziroli P40. When I spoke with Nick Z about the 3W, he said it would be a good choice, just might have to cant it a little to clear the muffler. He's using a 3W 80 in his, sure enough !when I mounted mine it had to be canted a couple of degrees to clear. I used a supersonic muffler from Aircraft International.I also spoke with Gerhart there and he stated that the 75i would swing a 24x10 3 blade, although it would not have the quick throttle response the 2 blade would have. Scale diameter is around 27"and with a 24" blade it will be hard to tell from scale size. Right now the glass fuse has the engine mounted, all formers installed and tail feathers completed. I made the wing out of foam and its ready for ailerons and flaps. I used Robart retracts. The way it sits right now its at 24 lbs, I'm hoping to keep it under 30lbs hopefully around 28lbs but I think that is a little unrealistic. Keep us posted on your progress, maybe we could swap ideas. Luck Jim G

Default 3w60 and 3w75

By the way these are two engines of comparable size and weight, might as well get the 3w75 at a few more dollars for the extra horses.

I give another vote for the 3w if your funds allow..... or just drop in a 5.8 and do loops from take off.

hey ,ray long time no see how's it going?? nice warhawk!
i have decided to go with the 3w-75i for power. i'm not looking to 3d the bird ,but i like the extra kick in the pants for power climbs after straffing the japs airfields and hangers heheheeh i had a ziroli a few years ago and while CDing the glenn curtiss model meet i flew my p-40 over GLENNS resting spot in a modest cemetary 100 yards from the runway which we were using . alot of cool history in the queit valley. everyone should visit at least once. thanks for all the info , ron "warbird_1

Default 3W-80

I have a 3W-80 inline twin in my P-40. It has live exhaust on both sides. The engine is a little rich on idle so it blows smoke out of the exhaust while taxiing. Nick Jr. has this set up in his also. I fly with a 24x10 Menz prop at 6000 feet in Denver and 24X12 at sealevel. It is a wonderful plane.

Default P40

Well it took awhile but I finally got my ZP40 in the air. This shot is on the bench about a week ago. I got to fly it Monday. The 3w 75i is a great combo. Nice big loops and plenty of power. No tendency to snap out. Engine is still running rich, 5680 rpm with a 24x10 Mesjlik. Came in at 34 lbs, can't wait for the engine to turn on better. Looking for info on what rpms I should be looking at with this engine. When this engine breaks in , it will probabley be up around 5800 5900 rpms . Is this a little too high, should I be looking at more prop or what. Hope the shots got thru. Jim G
