Congrats Dude! Beautiful cat. Nice to hear of more successful maidening going on. And, yes, I watched every second of the glorious Hawks playoff run....been a fan even thru "the dark years", so it was a pretty awesome thing to experience. The city was as lit up for the hawks as much as it was during the Bulls runs in the 90's

Interesting to hear about the gear having trouble getting down in the airstream. What kind of air valve might you be using? I've had better luck using U.P., or Century valves on some types as they seem to move more air than the Robart ones. I don't usually mess too much with a scale up and down speed as I like the gear to come up and down with some authority to be sure they get locked.

[quote]Final weight is 33 pounds with NO lead added for balance.[quote]

RCdude13, think you scale needs recalibrating, [sm=75_75.gif] especially with you using a Robart retractable tail wheel assembly.

I'll re-check the weight of my Hellcat, but I'm pretty sure it is close. I used pretty much all contest grade balsa behind the CG, and added lots of lightening holes in the formers. I think not using fiberglass over the sheeting really cuts down the weight too. The tail wheel is a mechanical unit so it does not have the air cylinder. The bbi pilot has a pink foam and pipe cleaner body. I was hoping someone would ask how I balanced it without any lead...I used 3 - 3600 mAh sub-C NiMh battery packs behind the dummy radial. I figured I might as well add milli-amps instead of dead weight. The 3 packs weigh 24 ounces. My balance point is 5 1/2 inches behind the leading edge with the gear retracted.

Mrice, here is a pic of one side of my exhaust. Sorry for not posting sooner but I waited till I was going to do some work. 1- I wanted to see how things were looking like checking the bolts or anything coming loose. 2- I was ready to install a C&H electronic ignition conversion on the motor. I have converted my 3 G-62's with his kits and the result has always been great. Ran the engine after the install and the idle was stable and much lower. I forgot to put the tach on it but I could almost count the prop as it ran. Will see how it goes in the air maybe next week.

Randy, what is big box under engine?
That is a box I welded up out of 1 1/2" steel to hold my weight for balancing. The weight is out at the end of that box. The weight ends up being just behind of the dummy engine.

It was brought up before on a twin that would fit with more power and still be able to fit in Horiz. This one would fit with a prop extension and have a lot of power being able to spin a nice 3 blade not scale but a lot more power than the GT-80. If I had to do over I would of went with this instead. Now I do say that the GT-80 gives me more than enough speed but the vertical is not how I am used to and have to treat more in a scale manor. Thought I would share it gives all the specs in the manual but cap to cap is 10.5" or 267mm.

Today I made few experiments... In last few weeks my friend made for me new exhaust system. There are no any silencer inside, both are empty inside... Interesting is that they are not much louder than previous exhaust.

On first flight I have Xoar 24x10 and with Tony Clark exhaust plus my scale exhaust, GT 80 have 5900 rpm.
Now, with this exhaust I get 6100-6200 rpm, 200-300 rpm more than previous...

I try today with few more propellers and here is resultas:

- XOAR 24X10 - 6100 - 6200 rpm - 12,4 kilograms of thrust
- XOAR 23X 8 - 6600 - 6700 rpm - 13,8 kilograms of thrust
- XOAR 22x10 - 7200 rpm - 13 kilogram of thrust

So, conclusion is, when I have 5900 rpm with my early exhaust system, on my first fly, I have less than 12 kilogram thrust!!!
For model heavy more than 20 kilogram that is very under power...

Yesterday I get my new engine for Hellcat, Evolution 80 GX, so in future no more problem with under power motor...
This engine with 26x10 XOAR prop on 6350 rpm give 17,8 kilogram of thrust, and with 27x10 on 5750 rpm - 17,5 kg...
With Mejzlik 27x10 Evolution have 6200 rpm (I buy that prop)....

Does somebody know a measure of Evolution "pitts style" muffler for this engine? I need diameter and lenght... Thanks in advance...

Mrice, I would look into maybe a Brison or Slimline muffler for the Evolution. I have had bad experiences with there 26 cc and the 35 cc muffler. They were very quiet but were very restrictive and it reduced the power by a lot unless the 80 is different. Also if you have a 26 inch prop you might put it on your plane and then check the clearance to the ground. When I flew mine with a 26-8 I touched the prop on the ground when landing maybe a 25-12 might work better overall.

Randy, thanks for answer...

I need some dimensions for start and my friend will made me exhaust here. It depend of space in to the cowl also... Here noise is no problem.
I am looking at Krumsheid, and some other sites and find some dimensions... They have some exhaust for engine up to 90 ccm, and it is 350mm lenght and 75mm diameter, but so long exhaust I can't put under cowl... Maybe some shorter but more mm in diameter... I will see...
G-Pete you know answer for all questions, help...

26" propeller is not so much shorter, maybe some three blade 25x10 or 24x10. This two are diameters which MVVS (Evolution) propose for 80 GX...

In last few weeks I changed engine and yesterday make first engine start. Propeller is Metts (same as Xoar) 24x10, exhaust is MVVS. I must made all new engine mounts because holes from Zenoah GT 80 and MVVS are not on same place.
To eliminate dead weight, batteries for flaps (JR matchbox), lights and ignition are under cowl.

My first impression is that MVVS have more thrust but until now no any measure and, comparate with GT 80.

Few photos...

Mirce, that is looking good. Good choice on the 24-10 3 blade prop. That 27-10 would of touched the ground on landing sooner or later. There just is not enough ground clearance with the Robart gear. Looking forward to your flight with the new engine.

Hallo Mirce,

Congratulation to this outstanding workmanship !
With this engine you will have power more than enough.
My Hellcat is also finished now and I am looking for a suitable Engine too. In order to the nois regulation and the better motor- sound I will use a four-stroke Gas-engine like the new Roto 85 FS . First Flight will be next year. (2 Fotos of my Hellcatat at moment).

Regards, Franz

Hallo Mirce

the weight of my Ziroli Hellcat is 9,9 Kg incl. Retracts, but without engine, servos, receiver and accus etc..
A club member of mine is designing a new V- Type-four Cycle gas-engine to use in my Model.
The Roto Engines, Roto 85 FS and the Roto 70V2, see www.rotomotor.cz , are worth having a look at.
It will take half year or longer, until I have news about my decision which Motor I will have in my Hellcat.
As soon as I have news, I will send pics again.
I´m looking forward to hearing and seeing news about your outstanding Hellcat !

Regards to you and your team !

Franz

Hi Franz,

congratulations for your superb HELLCAT.

Where do you live in Germany ?

I am living near Regensburg / Passau and if we are not too far away it would be nice to fly together with our HELLCATs once.

best regards

and "Servus" , Detlef

Yesterday I was finally made flight with my Hellcat with Evolution 80.

In fuselage I change position of servos for elevator so, they are now as forward as possible. As I wright early, new position of batteries for flaps, light and engine (under cowl) give me CG on the same place like in first two flights without add any weight. Hellcat is now 20,5 kilogram, without fuel. My tank is 0,7 litter and that is more than inaf for 10 minutes flight.

Before...

Now...

Hellcat with Evolution GT 80 engine is grate model.
Taking off is very safe, model is going strait with minor working with rudder. It need 60-70 meters (we have here grass airfield) before get in the air...
In the air it is flying excellent. For flying half throttle is inaf, but for all maneuvers Hellcat need full throttle. I am flying 13 kilogram heavy Top Flite Thunderbolt with G 62, and my impression is that Hellcat is all doing slower... But Hellcat is big and heavy and that give dimension of reality... I am so satisfied with this model...

Landing is very easy, down flaps, throttle on 1/4 and before touch down throttle on idle, little up elevator... No any filling that model is so heavy...

All in all, I am so happy with flying performance in this Hellcat - Evolution combination...

wULF190,

Can you tell me from your building and flying experience how the heat and stick method holds up under the use and longevity test of time and airborne cycles?
I am wanting to try this on my AD-5. A friend whom I also inherited a Z F6F short kit from told me of your method, so I have spent the last few nights reading your F6F build thread to see if I could acquire an answer to the question. By the way, great thread. When ready to start the F6F, would you mind if I tap in on your thread?

Thanks,

So far so good on the several birds I've used this on...out in sun, engine runs, etc..all not a problem. The bond is not gummy at all, so it seems to hold up quite well. I would rec. just practicing a little on some test pieces first to get the "feel" of the iron and how speed of movement is necessary...and be ready to sacrifice the iron to the building shop, as some glue will inevitably find it's way onto the surface and wreck it for future clothes ironing tasks it seems (don't ask me how I know that [] ).

The thread did turn out to be very profitable for info, from several awesome models and builders, so by all means, use it to it's fullest extent. I really enjoyed building the 'Cat.

Wulf190,

Thanks for the iron tip. I will hit some OJT spare parts before moving to the real deal. I just bought a new iron for some fabric work, so I will add the old to the build shop as stated. What is on your build table now?
