RE: CMP 160 sized Texan
I ordered one yesterday. I wasnt sure how long the sale price would be in affect so I went ahead and pulled the trigger. Just emailed Darrell at Sierra about getting some gear out on Wednesday. I guess the consensus is that a G-26 is perfect for it. I wonder how a G-23 would be as I have one of those "laying around" already.

Hello All
I have the red and yellow Texan. Spektrum radio with 3010 futaba servos and an SPE 40 with 20x8 wood Zinger. I fly at 4000' so the extra power is nice. Weight 15 lbs. 15 oz.. Flys o.k., but for $245 I think it is hard to beat.

How will this plane fly on a "short" runway? My club was field was built for 40-60 sized planes. I fly my H9 Cesna 182 thats a 150 size with no trouble but it has massive flaps. Would RCPILOT's flap mod be a necessity? I've been planning to join another local club that has a 600' runway anyways but would like to fly at my home field as well.

Ben ....without flaps on takeoff I need at least 90-120 ft for a safe takeoff..remember that flaps add drag and lift but you need air speed....on takeoff you can only apply about 10 degrees degrees of flap no more...it will land in about the same distance ( with full flaps applied )

No pics. Lost her at Warbirds over the Rockies. It really sucked because just before I took off the guy from Prop Wash videos that films the event said he wanted to do an interview with me about the plane for the Warbirds over the Rockies video. The cause of the crash was a bent elevator rod (4-40 wire). I should have used a seperate servo for each half of the elevator. But I never thought a 7/8 inch peice of hard 4-40 wire would bend before the 3010 servo would stall. Live and Learn.
I agree with rcpilot78 on takeoff distance of about 100'. One thing I think this plane does exceptionally well is a big scale barrel roll.

Ryon...you are absolutly right the barrel rolls are fantastic...I found that this plane does all manuvers well....too bad about the misshap....If that happens to me I will build another one.... for the price and the flight characteristics its a value....

I agree. I have another one on the way. ETA 27th of Dec.. I bought a set of Robart retract for the midwest texan that I will install on my new texan. I liked your idea of flaps. I didnt put a lot of add ons to my first Texan because I wasn't sure how it would fly. Think I will "trick" the new one out. Like I said before $245 is a great price for the plane.

RE: CMP 160 sized Texan
My one is slowly coming together - gear installation etc nearing completion. I have installed a new G-26 for power. This is the 'old' magneto version and not the e.i. one. As yet it has not been run and I intend to fire it up in the yard a couple of times with the cowling removed before I take it out to the strip.I have no experience with this engine as yet.
Query - what propellor(s) do you guys recommend? I had a dig around in the workshop and have found a new one each of APC 16x8, Master Classic series 16x8 and a Masters K-Series 16x6. I also found a Master Classic 18x6 and wouldn`t be averse to cutting 1/2" off each end of that if it was recommended?

Yes, the 4-40 rod, that you use to connect the servo to the composite rod, that is supplied with the kit bent. The wire was only 7/8" long. It bent coming out of a Split S. If I would have switched to high rates I think I could have saved it. But you know what they say about hindsight. The next plane will have dual elevator servos.

Hello Alan W
I have a G-26 on a GeeBee Y. I Fly at 4000' and use a Zinger (not Pro) 18x6 @7350 rpm. Used a Zinger 16x8 for break in. Right or Wrong, it seemed to work well.

Hi Ryon,
Thanks for that. I don`t have any Zingers that size lying around, but will have a play in the yard with what I have and see how that shapes up.

RE: CMP 160 sized Texan
Hi guys,
Need a little help. I am doing the AT-6 with Robarts, which came out very nice after a couple nights work. I am thinking of putting a Moki 1.8 in the plane. Do any of you have experience with this combo? Will I need to cut out and fabricate flaps to slow the plane for landing ? If so, will just the center section be enough ? I figure about 2-2 1/2 inches time about 19 inches length. I wonder if the plane needs this or will it slow enough to land on the mains without stall landings?
many thanks
Geo.
PS. Give me a figure for the final weight. I did the giant Zero and came in over 20 lbs. for a 14 pound bird. Yet it is a floater and won't land with out flaps, just keeps on going.

RE: CMP 160 sized Texan
Hello Sir
I have a 40cc (2.4) SPE on my Texan. I didn't have flaps but I did have Flaperons with down settings of 5/8". I fly my approach at 1.3% of Vs, +-1 Knot so I dont have a problem with the plane floating. I wish!!! Sorry back to reality. The flaperons made a difference in that you can fly a shorter pattern and have a shorter rollout. I bet the addition of flaps make a substancial difference. Most of my landing were flaperons up. On Grass, roll out was 75'-100' after I was familar with the plane. Total dry weight was 15lbs 15 ozs. with fixed gear. I will be installing Robarts in my new Texan, any advise, or things to be aware of?

Hi Rylon,
Go to page 7. There is some pictures I printed of exactly how to install the Robarts. It wasn't my idea this other modeler figured it out, I just copied his instructions. It worked out perfectly. Don't forget to swap the cyl. on the retract. It was a piece of cake. Two evenings and I had it painted with the retracts installed.

Do you guys think theres enough room to add a full depth cockpit to this fuse? I just hate the flat top where the cockpit should be.
Ben
PS, I should have mine sometime tomorrow!

RE: CMP 160 sized Texan
Hello All,
I recieved my "replacment" Texan yesterday! I bought my first one about a year ago and I can see a definite improvement in the current model. The clearcoat is thicker, there is much more glue holding each joint and the wood formers in the fuse fit much better. Wish they would make some improvement on the decals. Started installing the Robart retracts today. If anybody is going to install these retracts I made templates of everything, so if you would like copies let me know. But it is a very simple procedure. Anyway, I thought the first one was a very reasonablly priced plane so to get another one that is even better was like a second Christmas.

RE: CMP 160 sized Texan
Ryon,
I worked a little on my Texan today as well. I was pretty happy with the construction and amount of epoxy used on the joints. I even noticed carbon finer used at the firewall joint!
I ordered the Sierra Giant gear for mine. I still had to do several modifications to the center section for these to fit properly. The modifications were to the fiberglass skin only though. I'm not laying out the mods to make the wing three piece permanently for easy of transport. Has anyone else tried this other than rcpilot? His way works but I wondered if there other ideas. I plan to strip covering from the outer panels this weekend, fill the bays and glass. I'm doing this so that I can paint them and add a little more scale detail. I've already begun laying out the flaps per rcpilots pics and think it will work perfectly!
