It's all smoke & mirrors.

It's only about 1 1/4" deep.

So, have you tried flying the FW190 with the 1.20 yet ?
I'm dying to know results before I make any cuts or installations into my cowling.[8D]

I am going to fly mine this weekend- I am tired or waiting for my glow driver (sent in for repairs) so I am installing a remote glow plug until it arrives.

I have had some issues with getting the power out of my 1.20 it seems a bit low. ((15X8 @ 8300 Static RPM)) with the fan installed see pic. And I still cant find a spinner that I like....!!!

What muffler is that on your FS 1.20 ?
I'm contemplating breaking down and buying a gas engine (Evo 26) or using a new Satio 1.20 I have but i don't want to see that long pipe sticking out of the cowl.

That is not the muffler pipe. He is using a silicone exhaust deflector. It looks like the stock 1.20 muffler.

How tall are those landing gear legs when in the Dn position (not including the radius of the wheel)?
That looks like a pretty scale height.

I like your set-up...
How tall are your landing gear(NIC the wheel radius)?
Als, is that s layers of 5/8 or .5" ply as an engine block mount ?
lastly could you describe your cowl mounting system ?
It looks like it could be much more trouble free than using hardwood blocks.

The muffler is the stock 1.20 muffler that comes with the engine. I have angled the engine to fit inside the cowl by positioning it inside the bulge. I have also moved the engine as far forward as possible to reduce the nose weight needed. I used the scoop on the bottom of the fuse to hide the muffler as best I could. The hose is there to keep it clean. In the pic you can see that I am using a shroud to duct the airflow past the engine. The only reason for this is so I can use smaller openings for cooling. So far it has proven effective- I have not measured an engine temp higher than 179

The cowl mount is simple to install but hard to explain- I will post some pictures with more detail later.

Interesting shroud, I guess that actually makes quite a bit of sense to direct the flow, concentrating air in and out.

The Satio has seperated heads on their FS engines, so it doesn't quite fit in the bubble.[]
It would be great for you to post those images whenever you get the chance.
Thanks for the info![8D]
I've reached an impass at this point, cause my retracts don't fit in the provided opening (plywood mount), and I want to be cautious about deconstructing the structural box of the provided mounting area.
Funny, this arf is less and less like one every time I touch the thing.

Preflight Update- I had to remove the fan [].... With the fan installed the engine would overheat in just a few minutes. After I removed it the problem went away. The only possible cause for this that I can think of is that the fan was pressurizing the cowl and airflow was getting fowled up.

Other than that the baffle works great. I am going to put a few small vents in it to help move hot air away from the head. (for summer). I just balanced the plane and had to add 8oz of lead the the nose. I actually added it to the shroud so it was placed as far forward as possible. I have the CG set at 100mm for the first flight which I intend to do this weekend. (weather permitting)

Also Before I forget- Here is a simple pic showing the cowl brackets..

Okay, I've been busy, so things are moving slowly over here...I reaslize these aren't scale, but it looks good jkust the same.
Here are my flap mods.[8D]
You can also see that I've opened up the wheel well to accommodate longer gear legs.
That's another adventure all together!

NoFlaps - Great job on the flap mod! In my opionion, your flaps, look very scale! Granted some stuffy scale guy, may turn their nose up, but from 5ft. away, they look awesome!

Your landing gear modification, I will be interested in seeing how you accomplish the longer legs. I just bought the CM Pro - P-51 140 size, which diffinately benefit, from longer, beefier gear. I'll be cutting a lot of sheeting to accomodate my gear/gear doors!

Looks great, so far!

I've started to create a fuel tank frame and air talnk cradle for the plane since the Nitro version is different than the CMPro or GSP version.[:'(]
Here she blows:[8D]
I'm new to air systems so, I hope I'm doing this right.
I'm just sick of gear not fully closing in flight.

Just thought I would revive this thread! How you guys coming with your building progress? Pictures, please as I'm headed down to Toledo this weekend, and might have to pick one of these up to go along with my CMP 140 Size Mustang! That would make a neat picture flying together at the field, might even have to chase each other!

Same here. I have not started mine yet. I have been finishing up the Robinhood on the bench. I will start the 190 in a few weeks.

I have been researching retracts for this plane. I know CJM makes air retracts for the Top Flite and Pica FW 190s that would fit and be very scale like, but I don't want to pay $220 for them...The plane did not cost that much. Maybe there is a cheaper air retract for this size FW 190 that I don't know about. I was thinking that the retracts that come with the Hangar 9 150 size P-51 or P-47 might work in this plane. What do you guys think?

Personally for me, I would spend the money and buy a good set of pneumatic retract, so you don't end up hating this plane. My point is that you need a set of solid landing gear, that can take the abuse, especially if your flying off grass. I'm afraid that wire landing gear, will flex to much for you to enjoy this plane! If you add up all of the components of a completed airplane, the airframe is generally the cheapest part! Just my 2 cents!

I bought cheap robarts pnuematics (Still, nearly $200 bucks), and i'm thinking I should have paid more.
I have yet to install them but worry that the plastic casing may break...
Looking at the abuse that a .40 size plane takes, makes me think i shold have bought the Aluminum casing version.
I'll let you kniow how it goes~ At the rate i'm going it'll be the end of summer before this bird get up in the air.

I know this will sound cheap but I installed hobbico aluminum retracts. They are the second set (not satisfied with H9's) and so far they have worked flawlessly- At first I was concerned that they would be to wobbly. I beefed up the wire and push-rods with aluminum tubing and wallah!

I use a slow moving high torque servo to actuate the gear which looks real nice creeping up and down slow. They even look good sitting on the ground. I know that what I say is landing gear heresy but I have to speak for this fine set of 17.00 gear that I am using- (if I don't who will)?

Just curious...What's the high torque servo you use ?
On other planes I have w/ retracts, they typically get over loaded and rarely close while in flight, but work fine on the ground.

I got the servo on ebay from some guy in japan- It does not have a label plate on top (all black) kind of generic looking- But I will find out who makes it and let you know. I am very happy with this servo so far.

I did run into a problem early on with the push rods and thats why i built the uber pushods currently in use. They consist of a stiff wire threaded on one end inserted in a plastic pushrod surrounded by an aluminum tube. All built-up is is the thickness of a standard pushrod with sleave. With a Z bend on the servo side, a threaded clevis on the other and the whole unit stiffened by the aluminum tube the gear lock into place with some authority..

I have thought about breaking into this plane to. The cowl seems off to me though (length and size of lower bulges) and it definitely needs a new canopy without the sharp angle in the middle.

What do you guys think of the scale outline of the tail? Also does the wing have the forward angle leading edge at the wing root?

You're correct about the cowl blister sizes, canopy & The tail isn't quite scale either, but i've made some mods to it (tail) that I'll post.
The leading wing root is off too, but for a plane under $2 bills, it's close enough for stand off scale.
Most people would never know.[&:]
If i could only get a scale like spinner, I think viewers could forgive the rest of the stuff.
I'm stumped on what to do about that darn thing !![&o]
Anyone have any brilliant (and non-expensive )ideas ?
